Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer: English Voices

Based on the way Baker speaks about FF13 these days + his newfound fame, one wonders if he'd even go back if asked!

This is definitely just a dub over the trailer footage, anyway, as the footage is identical - I wonder if there's a running build with any English yet?

Ooh, do tell, what is Baker saying about FF13?

I feel like Japanese voice come as more natural while the English ones are like someone told me what's this character like so I'll act like him. Like you know from the get go who's who and what's he like.

I don't see how you can say this if you don't understand Japanese.

If they have enough time to do some VO are they likely farther along with the game than we all think?

Also I don't think the direction was the only issue. Some of the talent had no ability to do voice acting.

They already said the demo would be dubbed and dubbing lines from a trailer is nothing.

Now that you mention it, he kinda sounds like Dissidia's Squall. Same VA maybe?

Sounds a bit more gravely, but there are some similarities,it could be yes!

The voice might grow on me given enough time, but as it stands it seems exaggerated for noctis. Gladiolos the same. I think they should give Noctis' voice to Gladiolos and find someone else for noctis. The only one who had a voice that somewhat matches the looks/age of the character was Prompto, imo.

Maybe it's just the shock (itshappening.gif) of finally hearing them in english, which makes this game more "tangible", or hearing these characters in their japanese voices for so long, but these voices did nothing for me. Will have to get used to them to properly judge it but so far I'm not convinced..

Noctis isn't Johnny Yong Bosch.
My prayers are answered.

Prompto's voice is perfect.

Ignus sounds too old and the accent is really fake.

...Is Ignis British? lol. Glad and Prompto sound normal, but Ignis and Noctis are gonna take some major getting used to.
Best of the bunch is definitely Prompto.
Which is weird, because his Japanese voice is easily the most obnoxious. His English voice matches him really well.

For what it's worth, I'm guessing these lines were just recorded for this trailer rather than the dialog taken from the finished recordings. It happened with XIII; the voice acting in the final game was a lot better than some of the early English trailers.

Also yeah I thought the English acting for XIII was really good for the most part. XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, not so much

Balthier was SO good. Though I have to say, Fran's voice was extremely annoying.

OMG yes, Balthier was excellent! I didn't mind Fran's just because her voice was so different I found it fascinating. But FFXII's cast was quite professional and high quality sounding for the most part. I wish they could continue to have localization quality on that level for all FF's, but I guess we will have to wait until FFXIIHD for another FF release to have good quality VA.

disagree, XIII-2 had better VO than FFXIII, imo. Especially for Noel. his VA made him actually pretty likeable.

Woahhhh this is so weird, after all these years hearing the Japanese voices. Not sure what I think about them but I'm leaning towards...please add dual audio support.

Is that Ignis with the upper class home counties English accent? dafuq? He sounds ridiculous. And I say that as an English person, with a home counties accent.

'I need a baaaaaaathhh' - eugh

That's not saying much. XIII's VA direction was horrendous.

Agreed. Mainly I'm just happy that XV apparently lacks all that weird grunting and sighing that so much anime and video games have. XIII sounds like a porn film half the time.

The beginning sounded horrible for me, but the rest of the trailer sounded pretty good. I'm one of those guys likes anime and games in the original Japanese voices, but I'll admit the English VAs sound good and wouldn't mind playing the game in English. At least based on this trailer.

About Balthier voice actor. He was great in FF XII but since playing Dragon Age 2 where he voiced Fenris I started to dislike him. Mostly because I hated Fenris and everything about him including the voice and music which was so pretentious.

I like Prompto, and Ignis is okay once you get past the accent, but Noctis' and Glad's growly Batman voices are killing me.

they are so emo

he did his job well. Fenris was a real dick.

Man, I feel like I don't really "get" FF. I mean, almost no part of that trailer wasn't embarrassing, and every time someone spoke, I found myself thinking that maybe the inevitable heat death of the universe might not be such a bad thing after all.

Actually, though, I quite liked the music. Sweeping melodies in the grand tradition of the late Romantic era.

I generally don't like to judge an entire game's voice acting based on a 2 minute trailer. Seems fine to me. Square Enix puts a lot more into their localizations than most other companies, which people don't really seem to give them credit for. FFXIII fixed the lip sync problem, yet I've never heard anyone mention that as a strong point in the game despite years of complaints about that.

English voices will always sound weird if you've heard Japanese first. I'm sure the final product will be fine. Just like how the XIII trilogy and XII had good quality voices (I'm saying this independently of the quality of the script for certain games, of course).

I study Japanese and all, but I get really tired of people acting like listening to English dubs of these games would literally make their ears bleed. I only insist on Japanese audio if the dub is legitimately bad.

It's about direction, not what I heard first. I don't like reading subs anymore so generally unless the dub is absolutely awful I just grit my teeth and sit through it. Doing it right now with AC Unity, actually, because the British accents annoy me but the lip syncing doesn't match in French.

In any case though Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Panty & Stocking are all shows I don't enjoy watching in Japanese because the English actors actually sound like people and not "I AM VOICE ACTING" actors like the ones in this trailer, thanks to the direction.

tl;dr people don't like it because it sounds bad, not because they heard it in Japanese first

Sounds a tad generic but that's what happens when most of the cast are Americans *shrug*
Should have gone all British like Xenoblade/FFXII.

1. Xenoblade voice acting is more embarrassing than this is easily
2. FFXII did not have all British voice acting. The Archadians were British, Rozarrians were Spanish, Bhujerbans were Indian and the Dalmascans sounded American.

Noctis is the weirdest one. He sounds too old

The big guy's voice sounded too muted at times, like the audio balance was off.

I think Prompto and Ignis sounded okay, other than /baath/

That said, I find that voices almost always sound better with context and proper music than they do in trailers.

Can't really get much from that trailer. I don't think it's awful but at the same time I don't think it's too great either.

I need to hear a cutscene or two to get a feel of the character and the voice actor.

When Troy Baker goes "Hey! step on the gas and don't look back" at the very start of the trailer, i'm getting very bad flashbacks of David Hayter in MGS3.

I don't know.

I expected Noctis to have a much lighter, younger voice. I'm getting serious Aiden Pierce vibes and that is not a good thing. At all.

And I'm saying you can't judge overall quality of direction or acting based on a trailer. The dialogue was likely recorded just for the trailer. It even says at the beginning that it's an unfinished production.
