Dark Souls GFWL to Steamworks Migration is now live.

Ugh, I'm really bad at mods. I have never gotten anything to really work, besides one mod for Rainbow Six 3.

Does DSFix even improve anything for the Steamworks edition?

Do I just follow this?

1. DSfix improves everything that needed to be improved since FROM didn't touch it (other from removing GFWL transfer the progress/achievements)

2. Just follow that and you should be fine since its pretty much a drag and drop (possible modification of a line if you want to unlock the framerate)

Nice, come to think of it did you set the compatibility mode in order to get GFWL working at some point? I had to enable W7 mode in order to re-install GFWL on 8.1 just to do the save/achievement transfer. Others having problems should double check their compatibility settings

I bought the game on the Autum sale, had no clue about how it was with GFWL, tried it with compatibility mode, got so pissed with MS and it's shitty DRM client that I deleted the game and waited for this update. Installed again with the Steam fix, and the compatibility mode was still checked for some reason.

Oh, that was pretty easy. I'll try start up the game now with my settings.

Hmm, I can't start up the game? I have these settings:

renderWidth 1920
renderHeight 1080
aaQuality 4
aaType SMAA
ssaoStrength 1
ssaoScale 1
ssaoType VSSAO
dofOverrideResolution 540
disableDofScaling 0
dofBlurAmount 1
unlockFPS 1
FPSthreshold 28
filteringOverride 2

And I'm on a GTX 780, i5 processor and 16GB of RAM.

EDIT:
Wait, I seem to still only have the GFWL version?

I forgot that. I should now have the Steam version installed. I'll try start it up and see if I can get DSfix to work.

I have never played Dark Souls, so you can imagine how excited I am to get started. Should I go with keyboard/mouse or is controller better?

This shit works online, I'm not sure if I want to be responsible for having a bunch of cheaters using this and harassing people. The original link was removed by the mods over at reddit for that reason. Not saying anyone here would do that though.

PM me it, I want to see the E3 demo stuff.

You have to right click the game and enter Properties, then hit the Beta tab and select the one beta available. The transition is a bit funky, so they rolled out a special GFWL build to secure the saves somehow, then you use the beta to access the Steamworks build

Edit: I'm too slow!

Controller, playing with KB+M is a pain in the ass without mods.

Controller is much better for Dark Souls.

I hope you enjoy your time with it! Make sure to report your progress here, I always love to read first adventures :p

Did I screw it up for good? I accidentally followed the GFWL instructions even though I bought it on Steam a long time ago. But I've both uninstalled the game and reformatted Windows 7 since I got my platinum so there's nothing on my PC to find data from afaik? I got some kind of sign-in error at first before downloading the beta thing and then I proceeded tothe first bonfire and got an achievement even though I already have it, but on my GFWL account :/ That's when I noticed I did something wrong.

Edit: I think I've got it!

Can anyone trade me a Greatshield of Artorias for the Knight's Honor achievement? Last one I need, and I would rather make a new character for Sun Broing people through Undead Burg than play through another game for a Sif kill.

I can confirm that it's not a Windows 8.1 issue as it works without a hitch for me, FPS unlocker on even. No comptability modes set.

Edit: Did you guys add the new Dark Souls .exe to the exceptions list in Data Execution Prevention? That solved the crash issue for many.

Well at least that's something. Oddly enough, when I try setting it to compatibility for Windows Vista and earlier, I actually get the game window to appear and get an actual crash error message. As for DEP, I have not. Completely forgot about that. I'll give it a shot and report back.

edit: Nope. Still nothing.

Trying to figure out why I can't connect to GFWL.
Did the stupid Windows network diagnostic and it told me:
"windows cannot connect to the internet using http https or ftp"
So I tried to open IE, and apparently IE can't connect to anything. Tried opening a URL in windows media player and that didn't work either. Every program I have can connect fine unless it's made by Microsoft. Any ideas?

edit: scratch that, Origin doesn't work either.

I could try to give you one, but Steam appears to be down at the moment.

Running around as Lord's Blade Ciaran just slicing things is amusing. I wonder what people can find with the debug tool since I was just flipping switches to see what did what and triggered the ending.

Tried the latest DS FIx but can`t get the game to work if I unlock the framerate, any help?

It used to work fine on the gfwl version

Sorry if I'm being dense, but regarding this step:
6) Sign in using the same live profile used in step-2 to import your Save Data and Achievements from the Games for Windows Live version to the Steam version for the same profile (gamertag)

The same live profile? After I updated DkS to the beta version live seems like it's gone (good riddance) so I can't sign into the live profile.

My save games are showing up though, so I guess it worked?

Got it working with no issues, dsfix and all. Then instantly did something stupid with the game I loaded up to see if there were any issues with dsfix. Was in Anor Londo, just went for a run about, nothing major. Was in the hall with the two halbert knights and archer above. Down to 2 flasks; nope, screw this, run for it. Thought the fog door led to Gwynevere and I could get the ability to teleport...oh right, I hadn't beaten Ornstein and Smough...

Nah, you're not being dense, it's just the instructions being weird. I logged in the first time as part of step one and it triggered all my achievements. Closed the game, updated to the beta and GFWL was gone and my saves were good to go.

If your saves are showing up and your achievements are registered, you should be good to go.

So, I just unlocked over 41 achievements in under a minute...of those 41 13 of them less than 1% of people have them heh. I wonder if this means we can use non-gamebreaking/cheating MODs now? Like having a Sunny D instead of Estus, or having skins that retain the same hitbox.

That 13 achievements at 1% becomes considerably less impressive when you realize that "Enkindle: Light Bonfire flame" which is maybe 2 minutes into the game, is sitting at 5.4%. :p

Maybe her boobs or her furry legs distract you too much?

Almost beat her, but guess what happens? My fucking weapon breaks when her HP's at about 20%. So I'm trying to run around trying to pause to equip a better weapon and the bitch kills me.

God I love this game.

I have a question about achievements.

Today, after i played for the first time after the update, i managed to get my first achievement ever in this game. I lighted a bone file. Woot!

Problem is, i'm near at the end of the game. The only bosses left is the final boss and the dragon of the DLC content. The bone fire achievement that i got was because i lighted one after a Boss. I'm sure that i did most of the achievements but for some reason, while the game was still on GFWL, they didn't register. So, am i going to get these achievements retroactively at some point or i should play the whole game from the beginning?

I wasn't 100% feeling it with Dark Souls since I got the game, but after getting through the Gaping Dragon and now Quelaag on my first try...I believe. I'm amazed I didn't die once in Blighttown this trip to be honest, but holy shit there were some close calls with those dogs stunlocking me, and then Quelaag got one good hit on me with some flame wave attack that took my health down next to nothing.

I did watch ChristopherOdd do a let's play up until this part a while ago when I didn't think I'd be interested in this game, it was for entertainment, but I don't think it helped too much, because that place is a damn maze. I know there has to be tons of stuff I missed.

I know the next area is some trap infested crazy town, but now I'm pretty much in spoiler free territory...welp, better prepare to die.

Don't think that effects matchmaking.

Not at all. The matchmaking is region locked however. It's one of the nifty settings in the Steamworks API apparently. It's set to On by default and it limits your online play to whatever download region you have selected, From just have to disable it.

My brother is super into the Souls' series, so I've watched him play quite a bit, but it always struck me as kinda janky, so for whatever reason I just avoided it. I won a raffle for DS here on GAF and tried it a bit with DSFix, but I figured the GFWL thing would be removed eventually, so I put it off again.

So I played the game for the first time really today, putting in a couple of hours. At first it was all "you died you died you died" which I didn't mind -it made me keen to play more cautiously. Then after a bit the combat began to click, and now I'm seeing why these games are such classics.

Just watching someone play doesn't really give a good impression at all. I really do feel a lot of tension entering a new section. Exploring out, getting further away from bonfires, trying to judge if you should down an estus or keep going, not knowing what's around the corner or what a new enemy will do. And those mist doors. Is it just a door, or is it a boss? Watching someone play it all seems quite leisurely, but when you're in it, you really do feel tension. A lot of it has to do with there not being any "scrub" enemies, almost anything can kill you if you're not ready for it.

The level design is very good too, the map seems so fantastical, and the routes all cross over and above and below each other, it doesn't seem that complicated at first blush but then you start seeing the connections and you being to really appreciate what the designers did.

Anyhow, this is a really tight game. Looking forward to spending more time with it.

How do I use my Xbox 360 controller for Dark Souls? It works in all games but I can't seem to get it to work in Dark Souls?

The game was crashing for me at launch with DSFIX.

Shutting down RivaTuner, now it works.

It should work with Windows 7. I know I had to set Win7 comptability mode to get it to install on Windows 8

Refuses to work. Even tried the earlier solution of making sure gfwl is the 64bit version. This is why PC gamers will never be the mustard race...

Just curious is it possible to achieve 60 FPS at all time in this game with a card like 980 gtx?

Should do. With a 770 I'm rolling in the high 50s downsampling from 3840x2160. If you play native you should hit waaaay over 60.

Well there is a specific set of instructions you need to follow for it to install on Windows 7/8/10 I'll see if I can find the only solution that worked for me.

There you go!

And a quote for posterity just incase that ever goes down:
Just picked this up in the steam sale and cannot get it working.
I've tried every GFWL uninstall/reinstall fix I can find instructions for. No matter what I do, DS refuses to sign into windows live for game saves. The game launches fine, I would just really like to be able to save.
I see that people claim they have this running with no problems whatsoever.
How???
edit: Solved. Here's what I did, as a combination of everyone's advice. Maybe it will help someone else out.
Step 1) Uninstall "Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace" from Programs and Features
Step 2) Uninstall "Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable" from Programs and Features
Step 3) Reboot
Step 4) Download GFWL installer from here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
Step 5) Right click the installer, compatibility tab, set to compatibility for Windows 7. Apply and OK
Step 6) Right click the installer, run as admin. Hit next until it's installed.
Step 7) GFWL should prompt you to download and install the Windows Live Sign In Assistant. It will link you to an .MSI file that did absolutely nothing on my system. Instead, download the .exe installer from here and use Windows 7 compatibility mode on it: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26686
note: At this point all the advice says the game should now be working and sign into Live. It doesn't. It's still fucked. Keep reading.
Step 8) Either uninstall/reinstall Dark Souls, or verify cache through steam. This forces the Live redist to re-run for DS which will, I'm guessing, pick up the new GFWL/sign in assistant/whatever and start working.
Step 9) Run Dark Souls. GFWL doesn't need to be running or signed in prior. Once the game loads, the windows live sign in should drop down from the top and ask you to sign in (just like a game on an xbox would).
Hope that helps someone who was having the same troubles and rage I was. Lesson learned: never buying a GFWL game again.

Are you trying to convert your old saves?

Yes.

Using the beta "version" Game launches fine, will not convert saves... No popup at all for any gfwl sign in or anything. Tries to claim the program is not compatible with 64bit windows.
