NoA: "there are more great games on Nintendo platforms than anywhere else!"

she's adorable

Thats awesome :) I wish you that she stays healthy and happy all her live :) And if she prefer a PlayStation 6 one day than it's okay with me too ;)

It would take a POS to say anything. She's awesome dude! Grats!

Thanks :)

It's amazing how much having a little one changes a person. I never cared much for kids, but since the first time I held her, I felt like I'd gladly trade my life for her if I had to.

Edit: Just to be clear, I hope it never comes to that obviously. I want to see her grow up and start her own life out in the world some day.

Using your child as a weapon in this atrocious console war sir have you no shame!

Just a proud daddy. Seriously, I was so worried that people would insult her, just the thought kinda made me tear up. Being a dad has made me such a pussy!

How precious! I'm a father of two boys and they love Nintendo. I've always been a Nintendo fan and I'm happy to share that with them. Your little girl is adorable, and being a father is amazing.

Thank you :)

I hope my little girl wants to spend some time gaming with her dad, no matter what platform she prefers. Of course, my wife is absolutely opposed, but I'm sure we can wear her down :P

Just caught the edit.

I am a father. Here's my little girl a couple weeks ago when she turned 7 months old.

And if she wants a Nintendo when she gets older, I'll get her a Nintendo. I bought my nieces and nephew a WiiU. I'm not anti-Nintendo. I just no longer have a personal affinity for their games. That may change some day. Just not today.

Side note: Please, for the love of God, don't insult my daughter. I get that this is the Internet and people like to say cruel shit because you can and nobody can do much to stop you. But she's the only decent thing in my life most days, and is an absolute angel of a little girl. She doesn't deserve any insults, no matter how hollow. Trash me if you must, but please spare her. Thank you.

The thing is...if we're gonna talk apples and apples we should include 360, PS3, PC, Vita and Wii games from 2011 through 2014. Since Nintendo has given themselves a hefty almost 3 year head start by including 3DS games. Regardless...Nintendo does have some good games and so does every other platform holder.

Thanks :)

But let me ask what game will you introduce to her first? :)

Her cuteness is to powerful no foe stands a chance.

Hear's a very simple reality check to that statement: If that is true then why isn't the Wii U the best selling console?

All the proclamations that Nintendo is the best have to deal with that simple question.
Why do bloggers keep begging for Nintendo's demise or turn a blind eye when good things happen to them? Why do AAA 3rd parties keep insisting it's too hard or infeasable to port a game in full to Wii U? Why is it okay to port beg for Nintendo exclusive games to go multi-plat? There's more questions to this riddle than one...

Nobody is saying that Nintendo has bad games. Just that their gaming offerings don't measure up to the offerings on other consoles.

Since I love doing analogies tonight...

Although Blockbuster went out of business because it couldn't compete, I still like renting movies. Are you saying that I couldn't have commented that Blockbuster's business was flawed and that maybe they lower overhead and be more like Redbox? Or maybe they should have seen the writing on the wall and gone online before there was a Netflix? According to you, endorsing any kind of change is somehow equivalent to endorsing the original business.

It's just an arbitrary set of rules designed to make Nintendo look the best for a Nintendo ad. People shouldn't get too caught up with it.

Sony can always take the crown for more great rehashes than anywhere else.

They could also just say they have more 75+ rated Metacritic games. 89 for PS4 vs 75 for Wii U. 80+? 56 vs 46. 90+? 6v6. The data can be pretty easily manipulated by setting criteria for what fits and what doesn't, to suit whatever narrative you are trying to set.

Sony can always take the crown for more great rehashes than anywhere else.

What on earth does that means ?

As for the topic, I feel the way to define great game, and the whole argument is fallacious. The most obvious example of the problem arising from such a process is to take a look multiplatform games.

Bayonetta for example is on that list, but it wouldn't be on XBox 360's list of great games. Same thing for Rayman Legends that would be a great game on Wii U, but on no other console. One might argue that this would be a case of superior version getting better ranking, but then how would one explain that Virtue Last Reward is a great game on 3DS, but not on Vita, which is clearly the superior platform for that particular game.

To explain the discrepancies between the metacritic score (and on particular the user score) of games on Wii U, I would guess that Playstation and Xbox games get stupidly low scores from the other party's fans. The Wii U is generally left out of those stupid cockfights.

Anyway, a stupid procedure (as anything that involves metacritic tbh), for an otherwise very valid point : the Wii U has a few great games, and the 3DS has plenty of those :-)

But let me ask what game will you introduce to her first? :)

I've thought about that.

My grand plan is to have her spend a week or so each with my old consoles, without showing her the new stuff until the end. So she'd play Atari 2600 for a week. Then NES for a week. Then SNES. And on and on. That way, hopefully, she'll get an appreciation for how far things have come by the time we get to modern games.

Although, if you count little noisemaker infant apps, I've already introduced her to the iPad. But as far as "real" gaming goes, that's the plan. :)

We'll se about that, my son is getting a WiiU for christmas along Mario 3d World and Smash Bros. It will be the first time since the SNES that i actually own a Nintendo console.

Other consoles that are more inclined to advertise as multi-media machines and were built by 3rd parties, is that what you mean?

I'm afraid you'll need to explain what you're getting at for me, as I can't actually see what you're arguing or if it's actually addressed to me. (I don't recall making any sort of argument involving change...)

I think a better statement would be Nintendo is making more great games than any other developer.

I am amazed at how many great games Nintendo makes year after year. Games have gotten so much more complicated. There is no develper that can match Nintendo's output. Most developers will be lucky if they release 2 great games in a console's life cycle. Nintendo always creates at least one game a generation that everybody should play and study for its masterful game design.

Next year, just on the Wii U, Nintendo is releasing Splatoon, Kirby, Yoshi's World, Mario Maker, Star Fox, and Zelda. Even if you don't like Nintendo, for just one company you got to admit that is pretty amazing. For an entire console whether that lineup is enough is debatable.

The thing I love about Nintendo games is that they require real skill to beat fully. I never felt more challenged as a gamer as playing Champion's Road in Super Mario 3d world.

You and your The Last of Us, I can't hear this anymore ;) ;

There is no doubt Naughty Dog makes great experiences. As great as Last Of Us is, Sony can't stand alone on just on Naughty Dog's output. Although it is getting more difficult as games get more complex, Nintendo can still stand on their output alone. It is probably the only company around that can at this point.

The problem with Nintendo has never been great games, it is what to play between them.

Sounds like a plan! Best of luck :)

While what they say is true, I find their "list war" method to be bullshit.

* Retail console games only (why should "anywhere else" not include PC/digital/mobile?)
* Metacritic user scores are very biased (unlike say IMDB)
There are few things they could do to make it a lot better, like:
- Truncated mean (reduce the influence of outliers)
- Voter weighting (reduce sampling population bias)
- Bayesian estimate (reduce sample count bias)
etc.

Consumers concerned that company's advertising makes them look too good

Area man Joe Gafman today joins a multitude of consumers who are flabbergasted that a Nintendo advertisement makes it seem like the companies hardware actually plays good games. Said Gafman, "I know some people like Nintendo systems and all, but a guy I know at Gamestop told me they have, like, no games on them. I'm surprised and frankly repulsed that Nintendo put together a list of games shown to have universally positive aggregate scores to challenge my assumptions. I view this as a personal attack."

For years now, consumers have been comfortable dismissing Nintendo's efforts, often wondering when they will be bought out by larger companies, or if they'll ever give up their historically profitable business model in favor of selling free to play, microtransaction-filled iterations of their games on iOS and Android stores. Analyst at Wedbush Securities Michael Pachter commented on the controversy, saying "I don't know how much longer Nintendo can fight the internet's consensus that they're unsuccessful and don't have enough quality games to make buying a Wii U worth it. Facts and statistics will only confuse consumers eager to play a Nintendo-themed version of Candy Crush on their iPhones."

because the purpose of this ad is to sell their hardware as gifts. you can't buy a copy of gone home for your kid and put it in a stocking or put it under the tree.

This was perfect. Why are people so upset that Nintendo is trying to make themselves look good compared to the competition ? The saltiness is unreal

There's no saltiness, it just looks like they're desperate to me. I had the same reaction when MS did that ad saying that the best games where on the Xbone when most of them were also on PS4.

The WiiU and The 3DS have great games they shouldn't need to compare themselves with other consoles by uding metacritic of all things.

I said it before and i say it again. ^^

Nintendo is on the right track if people get angry. People just being condescending is dangerous, this is what led to Wii Us failure.
People getting angry at Nintendo for making good games is a good sign for them. People were angry at the original Wii a lot. :)

lol @ using Metacritic user scores as a measure of anything.

Considering how seriously here most of Gaf (pretty much any big game that comes out has review threads dedicated to it), Game developers/publishers take Metacritic, it's pretty much the Rotten Tomatoes of the video game industry, whether we like it or not.

"There are more great games on Nintendo platforms than anywhere else!"

Does "on Nintendo platforms in Japan" count? Because holy shit, man, the Virtual Console needs work.

So Sony can brag about sales, but bragging about ratings is desperate?

It's all marketing. Neither sales not ratings can determine whether you as an individual will like the console, but they're indicators that can inform your purchasing decision.

Lol at all the "it's true". Posts. Nonsense.... No third party support. Third party Devs drive the industry.

This is also true.

Nintendo definitely has some solid games of their own but their lack of third party makes it almost irrelevant if the sales are of any indication.

I know it's marketing and it's even possible that it's a good one. I was just stating my opinion on this. And what's make it desperate to me is the fact that they compared their lineup to the others. IMO when you have a good product you don't need to bash concurrents to make yourself look good.
