Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

I don't want to get in a racial or gender discussion with anyone. Giant Bomb should and, I have complete faith will, hire the right person to do the job regardless.

In closing, I will share this:

I just put a lit match down, it's not my fault it turned into a fire! I don't want anything to do with fire, I just like watching it burn.

Well, short of passing legislation called The Giant Bomb Act of 2015 wherein I force them to expand their horizons, all I'm personally doing is saying what I think and not actually obligating anyone to do anything. I am totally free to be disappointed with whatever they do or don't do and can just as easily be disappointed in a lack of desire for what I view as progress as you can be to celebrate it.

Of course you're free to be disappointed. I can't say I'm a fan of the idea that no progress can take place unless it involves someone who is not a heterosexual white male. Not to say that I would necessarily celebrate the hiring of someone who fit those conditions--it entirely depends on the person.

As a long-time fan of the site Patrick will be sorely missed, however I wish him luck in his future endeavors and can't wait to see what he does next!

Sad to see him go. He and Jason are two of the best investigative games journalists around. Hope wherever he lands works out for him.

But true diversity comes from people who look and sound different, not from different opinions and values. Didnt you get the memo?

Lauren Lapkus for Giant Bomb. Everyone gets what they want, yet no one really gets what they want, and the site becomes 100x more hilarious in the process. Go down that improv comedy spiral Jeff, you know you want to

So lifetime staff of Giant Bomb consists of:

Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Vinny, Drew, Patrick, Alex, Rorie, Jason, Dan.

10 out of 10 white males does not line up with that graph. If we're doing things purely by numbers would you like to bring gender into things?

On top of that would you like to convey the prerequisites of being the best man for the job at Giant Bomb? Because it's a notion that I find ridiculous.

Probably like... experience, game knowledge and editorial preferably... also familiarity with video production. Is that ridiculous?

If they hire someone new it should be someone with a different taste in games than the rest of the crew. I feel Patrick had that with his love for horror games, Dan filled the Nintendo love and Jason has the Japanese games and fighting games covered. Whether that's a white male or not, who cares honestly? They should hire who they think fits in with the crew and the site regardless of race and gender and not feel forced to go a certain way.

Whoever replaces Patrick should be someone capable of doing what he did and the best choice for the job.

Going to be hard to do, there's few that fill that niche.

At best they're probably going to have to let someone build that kind of career from the ground up. "Best choice for the job" is pretty goddamn open.

Jim Sterling is the only one that comes to mind and aside from the obvious reasons he'll never work at GB, he seems focused almost entirely on producing video content. I don't really think there's anyone who can replace Patrick except for Patrick.

QUICK! Some US citizen propose to Cara so she can get in on that hot fiancee visa action!

I'm joking, obviously. Don't be weird.

A damn shame. His Spookin, Bombin', & Spelunky segments were highlights of the last year of content, and he's a fantastic writer to be working in the industry. I hope he keeps working in games journalism, because we're lucky to have people like him applying their talents to stuff like this.

Haha. I'm not going to Nintendo, and I'm not becoming a community manager. :)

I'm also OK saying I'm not going independent and opening up a Patreon, either.

I did want to stop by and say hi, though. NeoGAF was one of my first homes--people forget I was a moderator way, way, way back in the pre-NEO days. You've treated me very well during my tenure at Giant Bomb, even when we haven't seen eye-to-eye. Thanks for that.
A significant loss for Giant Bomb, IMHO. Good luck in your next endeavor, Patrick. Keep us updated! I really appreciated your work with GB.

Ever since I made the mistake of opening my mouth about this, I've learned through posts like yours that bringing up diversity in reference to GB is met with a TON of projection. Usually it's "They shouldn't feel like they are forced to!" so I applaud you for changing it up a bit to "So progress is only reserved for people who aren't white males?".

All of it completely misses the point though.

I would love for them to hire Cara Ellison. I think she would fit in really well and wouldn't just play the same games the rest of the guys play.

Well, what's your point? Expressing regret about starting a discussion and telling people that they are missing the point isn't going to enlighten anyone here.

As a minority I don't give a fuck who GB hires so long as they're into
anime
VIDEOGAMES.

I didn't start the discussion.

Among the many problems with those arguments is that they focus on an imaginary choice between ability and diversity, and they ignore the fact that a more diverse choice could add something to GB that no white male could, and it's not a question of talent.

EDIT: Anyway no biggie.

Not to judge the site or anything, but they felt that it would be too much work to produce top 10 videos for each staff member this year. It seems like they just want to stick to being professional game streamers with the occasional produced video. It's just easier to sit on a couch and talk over a game live.

Those are very labor-intensive. That sort of thing in Surreality TV shows takes many many man-hours in video editing.

Yeah. Doesn't change the fact they are high quality writers and deserve the success they have. I admire what they have done and the kind of community they have built up around their style, even if it isn't for me.

The thing is, at least when Brad or Patrick had deep thinking pieces, the quality of the feedback has been higher in the last couple years (either that or the mods have went Space Marine on the comment sections one).

Tying this back to the inevitable hiring question, yes: they need a great writer with an intellectual bent who'll try new shit.

We can hope that Alex will write more now, since someone's going to have to put text on the site, outside of reviews that is.

Really? Why? Isn't the general consensus that unless your writing consists of buzzfeed-level articles then written content is a good way to go broke?

I personally believe that their next hire should be someone for their New York office so that that place's content production isn't reliant on just two people, preferably someone like Drew who can work both behind and in front of the camera.

By the sounds of Pat's last report Brad wont be far behind leaving GB.....

"You've been a friend for nearly half my life, and it was an honor to call you a co-worker the past few years. Something tells me it's not the last time, and I truly hope that's the case"

Fuck, I really hope you're just reading too much into that.

I know what you're doing next: bringing back Agressive Shrub Jumping. It's time

Wonder who else remembers this :P

Best of Luck, Patrick.

Fuck, I really hope you're just reading too much into that.

He wouldn't have put 'I truly hope that is the case' if he was really positive about it. Patrick isn't really good when it comes to tells(Alot of Duders-including myself-talked about Patrick leaving about a week or so over at the GB OT, because of the way he was tweeting and even his last spookin' the way he talked about spookin').

He's just hoping. Brad will GB. Forever. Maybe.

I agree that whoever they bring on should be NYC-based, but they need a solid news writer. Patrick's ability to research & break stories shouldn't be taken for granted - he's brought a lot to the team. Whoever comes in next needs to fill that gap.

Patrick's replacement will be the first person to successfully interview Patrick and ask him the sort of hard-hitting, investigative journalism questions that, quite simply, must be asked for the sake of the integrity of this great industry of ours.

Chief among those questions MUST be:

Patrick, why were you never more black or hispanic...but often a little too asian?

You're welcome, Jeff Gerstmann...you're welcome.

Well, when someone asked him on Tumblr why Crypt of the Necrodancer wasn't on the list for best music this year he answered:

It wasn’t eligible since it’s still in early access, but you bet your ass it’ll be on the list next year.

So, he's already planning his moves for the next GOTY stuff :P I wouldn't read too much into what Patrick wrote.

This is the listing for the new Senior news editor position that will replace Patrick (been up for a month), it's in New York: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs2/view/29267214

I think that Brad mention is more of a comment on how people in the video games journalism field end up working with the same people a bunch (see: Giant Bomb's acquisition by CBSi) than any hint of Brad leaving.

Also, Brad is leaving.

In terms of "who do we know gels well with the current GB team":

Samantha and Cara both work extremely well. Samantha would bring great perspectives from the dev side if involved in a podcast, I have no idea where she currently resides though, probably SF and wouldn't be able to to fill the NY positon. She also has her own game and development stuff going on. Cara hops all over the place and I think is a great fit for the NY team. Her embedded style is different from what GB has had before, but could work.

I don't want to see a "news monkey" that just posts videos and press releases. The rest of the team can help fill that roll; Alex already does a lot of that. Cara has connections so could replace a lot of the "inside scoop" stuff that GB will lose without patrick.

I don't know of anyone else that we know has good karma with GB and is "available". If either of them want a position with GB, they should be no-brainers.

Simultaneously the most annoying and most interesting member (humor aside, which he lacked) of the Bombcast while I listened to it. Stopped listening a long time ago, only watch highlight videos once in awhile.

So lifetime staff of Giant Bomb consists of:

Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Vinny, Drew, Patrick, Alex, Rorie, Jason, Dan.

There was also Alexis.

Because it is the case! Men and women are different! They notice different stuff I would have never seen in life. Same thing as it pertains to race. It's not inherently a bad thing. It can be nefarious, but different perspectives are good!

I don't see how a woman fits into the dynamic, it would be disruptive just to meet a quota.

The Giant Bomb audience is not crying out for specifically a female perspective.

The most important thing is a person who fits into the group, just like Dan who feels like he should always have been there, even though many here and elsewhere bemoaned the appointment, and I am thoroughly glad none of that criticism was taken notice of as Dan is what GB needed.

There are places where a female perspective can be ascertained on gaming, it doesn't need to be shoehorned into GB.

ryans gone. pattrick left. vinny and alex are away.

all good things have to end i guess

These are kinda my thoughts. I still enjoy listening but it really hasn't been the same without Ryan, Vinny and Pat. I'll really miss Patrick. I was always happy to hear from him time to time on random casts after his departure. Best of luck to you Pat, it's been an awesome ride

Mannnnnn

:((((((

My fav bomber. This sucks. I didnt even see this until today.

:(

So lame. But I really hope he finds somewhere else. Ill support his content anywhere he goes.
