Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

We know what we want. We want Mary Kish!

Seriously, she knows her games. When she came on the UPF to play Evolve, like, she freaking explained what that game was. Compared to the other duders, she actually gets into the games and understands them.

You're forgetting how that segment of the show was painfully boring.

I'm still a Kish supporter, though. She's usually very entertaining.

Meh, always thought he was a total fifth wheel when he first joined, and never thought he fit with the bombcast. Not surprising or much of a loss to me.

Whatever they do, please no more ignoramus-types.

One Homer Simpson is over our quota already

I said this back when they were last hiring, and I'll say it again. They need to hire the best person for the job, regardless of gender or race. That is the only fair and logical response. People who are saying they would be "disappointed" if another white male was hired are just as moronic as the people claiming that women can't/shouldn't be hired there.

"Let's promote diversity and fairness for all races/genders! Unless we're talking about white men, fuck those guys!"

[insert explanation of institutionalised systemic macrodiscrimination here]

I did not say I cannot relate to women ...
Also could people stop putting words in my mouth or extrapolating what they wish to type from my posts because I don't agree with a perspective they hold.

I mean, you said a 30 year old woman is not relatable to you, I'm not sure what the difference is between that and saying you can't relate to women, but maybe you'll explain that.

Also, extrapolating things based on what people say doesn't seem like such a bad thing to do. What I don't understand is how you can extrapolate your own personal feelings of finding a 30 year old woman "not relatable" onto the entirety of the male Giant Bomb fan base.

I really don't care about the gender. As long as it is someone that fits with the group well.

That's fair enough and that is my main concern, I listen to other podcasts with women on them (PC PRO for example is really good) and their gender is not even a thing to me.

I just couldn't envisage a girl who could fit into that bloke type humour and perspective you get from GB.

There's this sinister paranoia underscoring the general fear of a 'female perspective' as if somehow they're going to be this radical, disruptive and audience-killing presence on the merits of their chromosomal makeup alone.

It's irrational and stupid.

What absolute trite!

There is no fear, there is only your agenda combined with your delusion that produces the illusion of some sort of fear of females.

GB will pick who ever they think is the most qualified for the job they want that person to do, race, skin color, gender should not be a factor. Unless of course they are trying to make their new employee fill in a token role to satisfy people like you. In which case, I feel sorry for that person.

In regards to this theoretical woman's gaming taste and sense of humour / perspective in relation to what I get from the dynamic of the group on GB.

I didn't mean in a general sense and obviously need to be more specific in my language.

Why does there continue to be great gender inequality in the tech workplace?

Cary or Mary could fit, hypothetically.

I was just listening to the first few days of game of the year and was thinking of sending Patrick a note thanking him for his superb explanations of some niche titles that he played (Danganronpa for example).

One thing I really appreciated about Patrick was his willingness to try new games and styles of games. Giant Bomb doesn't need (and couldn't find) a Patrick clone, but I hope his replacement is just as willing to explore some of the less mainstream corners of the gaming world.

Best of luck to Patrick, I've been a fan since he joined the site!

I haven't said that GB must hire a woman, but the argument that women wouldn't fit in with the GB crew over some hand-waving adjectives like 'blokey' isn't based in anything rational. 'But, but the audience' is fear. Learn to identify it. And good job erecting some specter of 'my agenda' while calling me delusional.

you lose, good day sir

what a dumb series of posts

Good luck wherever you are heading, Patrick.

I think the problem with Patrick and his stint on the Giant Bombcast is that he was a bit too cerebral for what most people want out of the podcast. His contribution to the podcast was mainly copious talk about games, and I think a lot of people (myself included) tune into it for entertainment with a side of games. Just my opinion and I could be way off, of course, but that's how I always looked at it.

I'm sure he'll do fine wherever he may be off to. Godspeed Scoops.
I think that was his best asset, he brought something to the site none of the others could. His perspective, his articles, his different taste in game, it was all really enriching for the site. He will be missed.

Motherfucker! And my New Year's resolution was to start watching/listening to Bombin' the AM.

I gotta echo the sentiment that whoever fills his shoes has the same willingness to try new games. I'll definitely miss his content as well.

Good luck Patrick in what ever you do next.

That's a really big problem, dude. It's like a half step away from outright sexism. There is nothing about being a woman that would stop them from participating in the site's humor.

Some test cases: Replace the following moments in GB history with a lady, nothing changes.

-Wanting 40 cents back from a cashier at a gas station, threatening to carve '40 cents' into their flesh
-"Let's watch a pro" (ravaged QL)
-Oh yeah, I fucking LOOOOOOVE Mario Party"
-Brad's look towards the camera to end GOTY this year
-A woman pulling the Dan maneuver in Fibbage
-A woman in Rorie's part of the GOTY videos.

It's infinite.

Good luck to where ever he goes or does.
I liked him when he was on the bombcast.

Once he left for Chicago I kinda stopped watching his stuff though.

Cary or Mary could fit, hypothetically.

I haven't heard any of their work and if it is natural and real that would be cool, I sometimes in other things have felt some woman trying too hard to fit in by trying to adopt a persona and it comes across as false and I can sense it straight away.

I understand why they might try and do that as it would be a lot of pressure to be accepted by a male audience, but personalities make that site and only someone being themselves while be the right type of person to fit in with the group will succeed, male or female.

As far as I am concerned Patrick never fully fit in, Dan has done better in a fraction of the time and his absence is felt even after this short amount of time when he is not on the cast.

So then your proposal to fix the problem of gender/race inequality is to....exclude someone based on their gender/race?

Since my post clearly says they need to hire the best candidate regardless.

I really liked patrick on feedback, but I always felt he didn't fit that well on GiantBomb. I hope he finds a good outlet for him. I also hope he returns to his feedback prime.

I'ma need a link for that first one.

Genuine question - are you sure you have the right site?

Karen the Fungineer? Carrie Gousgos? Cara Ellison? Mary Kish? Any of these names ring a bell?

Couldn't disagree more. I always enjoyed hearing Patrick's perspective on things, and he certainly got along with the rest of the crew really well. On the other hand, Dan's simple-guy persona got real old for me just a couple weeks in and now the only real thing I enjoy about his presence on the podcast is the others' incredulous reactions to whatever dumb things he says.

opinions, lol.

Hey I am just being honest about how I feel.

Secondly your need to insult says a lot about you.

I have engaged with those who have quited me and explained how I felt.

If that brings out the need for you to insult me then that's up to you.

I will not contribute to any further derailment or get drawn into a series of insulting posts going back and forward.

I'm still a Kish supporter, though. She's usually very entertaining.

I feel like that's more a burn against Evolve than Kish's talents on camera. That game isn't particularly interesting to play, watching a match play out is fairly torturous.

All you need to see is the Spherecast & Avalon Quick Look to know she's got chemistry with the team. And her talents have already been proven on Gamespot.

I stand by the fact that they need an NYC-based person, though. The San Francisco office is already a very good equilibrium, now that Drew is a full-time personality & Dan's started up so many projects. One more person on the couch doesn't seem like the right move (plus, I think they have a solid relationship with the Gamespot crew. Making any of them full-time staff wouldn't add a ton).

Nah, Dan is perfect.

I sometimes think Dan was created in a lab for the express purpose of working at Giant Bomb.

In fact, I'm sure of it. Thanks science.

The job posting is for NYC, so you're in luck.

Exactly, that was mine and you posted yours.

Not sure what so "lol" about that.

Systemic hiring discrimination always comes down to interactions between individuals, no?

He was talking about discrimination on a macro level, which absolutely exists, and yes it's the amalgamation of interactions between individuals on the micro level, but unless you're going to outright call Jeff and crew a bunch of bigots, I don't see how you could say it has any bearing on discussing who Giant Bomb decides to hire.

Systemic hiring discrimination always comes down to interactions between individuals, no?

When you boil it down to that, then yeah a friend/acquaintance will always beat out those other applicants with equal skills. That's just the way of life.

Like, I'll always choose my buddy over you if it came to like, carpenting, even if you were just as good, just because he's my buddy.

Simultaneously the most annoying and most interesting member (humor aside, which he lacked) of the Bombcast while I listened to it. Stopped listening a long time ago, only watch highlight videos once in awhile.

There was also Alexis.

I didn't list the tech guys who weren't exclusive to the site like Alexis, Dave, and Coonce as I assume their employment isn't down to Jeff.

Probably like... experience, game knowledge and editorial preferably... also familiarity with video production. Is that ridiculous?

It's ridiculous because none of those things aren't relevant to why Dan is the "best man for the job" in the minds of the people who think like that. Dan fits in with the crew because he's a goof who's managed to achieve everything he set his mind on, he's not ashamed to acknowledge his short comings or his lack of knowledge on subjects, he's willing to push for zany projects, and he's always a cheery motherfucker. He's a great fit for for the site just like Patrick was a great fit for utterly different reasons. My point was there's clearly no best person for giant bomb given how it's a personality driven site that will benefit from any person who has passion.

To me, Dan's personality and humor were the perfect fit/replacement, to fill the gap of losing an in-house Vinny (and though you can't replace Ryan, it helped bring back some childish fun). He's become a good foil to Jeff and Brad, and has created a nice pair up with Drew, that makes up for the loss of Flight Club.

A new position, for one, has to be in NYC. They have to get Alex and Vinny off the ground and going. New studio building or not, it's been a ghost town for 6 months. Someone to be the balance between Vinny's mirth and Alex's sardonic tones would be good. A host-type.

I probably should listen to more of Cara's stuff. Haven't heard much, except her accent, which is nice while not being really thick.

Your leaving out a pretty big part of his argument don't you think?

I don't see how a woman fits into the dynamic, it would be disruptive just to meet a quota.

The Giant Bomb audience is not crying out for specifically a female perspective.

The most important thing is a person who fits into the group, just like Dan who feels like he should always have been there, even though many here and elsewhere bemoaned the appointment, and I am thoroughly glad none of that criticism was taken notice of as Dan is what GB needed.

There are places where a female perspective can be ascertained on gaming, it doesn't need to be shoehorned into GB.

It's pretty clear that he is not saying that a female can't possibly fit in with the GB crew, just the fact that specifically looking for one to fulfill some sort of quota would be bad.

So yeah, attributing that to some sort of paranoia and fear of women is what I would call delusional.

He pulled the 'quota' thing completely from his ass. What would you call it? Well-researched and based in evidence?

Mary was a bit too... Gamespot in that Evolve bit. A lot of those guys and girls seem like they're reading bullet points off a crib sheet when talking about the bigger games. Chris Watters has had it in his GB appearances too, seems like a super cool guy but there's maybe a bit of pensiveness about saying "This thing doesn't seem so good". <3 Mary when she's turns up for some multiplayer madness though.

We're talking about the hiring of individuals here. Do you think Dan was hired over other people because of discrimination?

In a sense; he was the best candidate qualified for the job at least in part because of the way in which people of his general demographic have better opportunities and are given better chances to have that kind of job. But more generally speaking, I was just calling bullshit on the "People calling for diversity are discriminating against white males" argument.

I don't give a shit who they hire or what their demographics are as long as they fit well with the rest of the group, and I trust that they'll do so as they always have so far.

In my view saying they have to/should hire a man or woman specifically are two equally inane statements.
