Patrick Klepek is joining Kotaku

Is this the dude that quit the other day and people were sobbing like crazy? Hmm so now everyone is like "lol"?

Sooo much drama these days.

My first thought is what a massive downgrade. Why would anyone leave Giant Bomb to work at Kotaku?

Maybe more investigative resources? Kotaku is part of a much bigger journalism (sort of) network. More money, more connections, etc. That, and they can probably pay him more. And yes, I know GB is owned by CBS. But Kotaku is a bigger part of their network than GB is to CBSi.

Seems like a downgrade. Best of luck to Patrick though. I wonder if he was starting to feel like kind of a fifth wheel over in Chicago by himself.

Kotaku contrary to what people on this forum think has always had the honor of not being as terrible as people on this site seem to think.

Ringing endorsement - "It's not as bad as you think!"

Really curious what kotaku can offer Klepek that GB couldn't.

Looking forward to his articles nevertheless.

Can kotaku finally bring back it's podcast? Really enjoyed that back in the day.

Readership probably. Though he's obviously done a lot of on-camera stuff at Giant Bomb he's still predominantly a writer, more so now after he moved back to Chicago. People don't go to Giant Bomb to read stuff, they go there for the podcasts, Quick Looks, and live shows, which Patrick obviously hasn't been a part of lately. If you want to write and you want people to actually read what you write then Giant Bomb is not the place to be.

I wonder if the move isn't at least partially cash-motivated. We've overheard for awhile that Giant Bomb is budget-constrained, I don't think anybody is exactly getting rich over there. Job hopping is an easy way to get a raise, especially when you've got pull like Patrick does.

Kind of a downgrade. Kotaku has gotten better (mostly to incorporating new policies like refusing coverage of games with weaponized review embargo) but they have a long way to go.

I'm willing to bet that making content for a video focused site when you're by yourself is really difficult. He likely wanted to focus more on writing and not have to worry about doing the video side of it.

Gonna miss Patrick on GB, I do wish him the best at Kotaku though.

Yes, the hard news and interesting editorials are buried under an avalanche of click-bait, like "The MacGyver intro without music is hilariously ridiculous".

Core.kotaku.com.

Whoops, wrong link- http://kotaku.com/tag/kotakucore

Nice.

Totilo, Klepek, Schreier, Plunkett & Hernandez is a pretty solid core of writers.

I have my issues with Plunkett, and Hernandez is widely regarded as a joke (with good reason). First three plus Amini are solid tho.

Makes sense. Kotaku has a lot of click bait but they also have a lot of really really good investigative journalism and editorial content. Plus, they actually sound like they still like video games.

Kotaku, whether you liked it or not before, is a better place with Scoops on board. I think it's a bit tacky to debate whether it's an upgrade or a downgrade. Regardless of that, it seems like a good fit.

This just reminds me that the first time I heard of Patrick, it was after he took over for Luke Smith at 1up.

Luke Smith, before 1up, wrote for Kotaku.

GB at this point basically only does video content. That makes it really hard for someone who wants to do written content like Patrick does. At kotaku, he can do the type of work he's comfortable with. That's probably why he left.

Also worth considering, Patrick was kind of on an island in terms of GB. He was alone in the Midwest, so most of his content was solo and disconnected. Maybe it was a mutual parting of ways between he and GB, and the Kotaku offer was on the table for a while.

I personally have no idea what Giant Bomb is though I can guess from the thread titles here that contain the words "Giant Bomb".

However, I visit Gawker [network sites] multiple times a day.

So maybe his move is related to the exposure he can gain?

Cool, Kotaku's been putting out a lot of good stuff recently and this should make it even better. Look forward to him doing more long form investigative stuff since that never really felt like it belonged on Giant Bomb.

I believe they've said that non-video content gets way less views on GB than their video stuff. So, good chance his articles will get way more reads on Kotaku.

Him and Jason Schreier's style works well together. A good fit. Might make me want to read Kotaku more than once a week now.

Agreed. I definitely fire up Kotaku's front page once a day but it's typically only Mr. Schreier's articles that'll get me to stay longer than just perusing article titles. Having Klepek there definitely makes that draw stronger. Great get for Kotaku.

He obviously has his reasons but it still seems weird jumping from GB to Kotaku. Either way, I wish him all the best. He'll do great things there.

As much as I disagree with Gawker in general, the crew at Kotaku always keeps me coming back to their site. This is just another reason to keep on reading. Good luck to the entire crew and Patrick.

I'm glad that I saw this news while I was on the toilet because I legitimately shit myself when I saw this headline. Best of luck to you at your new gig Scoops <3

I don't know Kotaku has far away better serious articles than Giant Bomb does, so in that sense it's a clear upgrade. I've kind of drifted away from Giant Bomb over the last year

this should be really cool. congrats, Patrick and the rest of Kotaku.

Kotaku was my most-read gaming news site before my GAF addiction started in earnest, and i'll be happy to return to regular reading. quite the crew they've got over there.

kotaku really needs another site refresh. I have no clue how to access articles/features, funny enough its about as bad to navigate as giantbomb :p

Bring back the podcast!

Wow, I guess I'll be reading Kotaku a lot more now.

This. It's been literally years since I last looked at Kotaku. I used to post there loads back in the day ('gold star commenter' and all that nonsense) but I discovered NeoGAF and felt that it pretty much rendered other gaming forums a moot point. If Patrick is going to be writing for them now then I'll have to start dropping by again!

Seems a good fit, good luck to Patrick. I rarely visit Kotaku since I'm not really interested in 90% of what's posted there, but I'll check out what he writes when he's posting it on Twitter etc.

Okay, now I think that Patrick was actually let go (from higher ups from CBSi, not Jeff) instead of quitting on his own accord.

Because really, Kotaku? Kotaku?!

Kotaku has improved itself so much in the last few years and it just keeps on improving. Quite an impressive about face.

Polygon could learn from Kotaku. (Which is funny, because Brian Crecente, the EIC of Polygon, was the EIC of Kotaku before Totilo)

Yeah, they have much better content now with Totilo for the most part. They still have stuff that makes me cringe, but the press sneak fuck's articles are pretty good.
