Patrick Klepek is joining Kotaku

Congrats to Patrick for the new position. Seems like a weird (or safe) move though, would have been cool to see him do something new or a bit more 'out there'. Hopefully he continues Spookin' with Scoops and some of the other video content he did because I enjoyed that.

Patrick was awful on the podcast, most of his quicklooks were bad BUT spookin with scoops was great. I liked having less of his content since he moved away... but now he can truly be happy and endlessly write about GamerGate issues until he solves societies ills one keyboard stroke at a time!
Did he kill your dog or something?

Also merely speculating here, but this move seems pretty simple to me. Giant Bomb has always been video focused, and their podcast continues to be one of the most popular gaming podcasts around. Patrick was unable to participate in ether of those things due to his move to Chicago. Really feel it comes down to that more than anything else. Kotaku just makes more sense for him imo.

Yep plus with GBEast appearing and apparently now staffing up.

For context,

At the OSU-Alabama football game yesterday, the camera zoomed in on a couple of a cheering OSU fan(the girl) and her boyfriend who seemed dejected. She realized she was on camera and slowly moved away.

Someone on twitter then captioned that, and claimed that she moved away because the guy was his 'sidepiece' aka, her second choice, etc.

Jezebel, one of Gawker's sites and Gawker ran with the story, did even more sensationalizing, and basically turned it into a story of how girl is totally the victim here or some other dumb shit.

Its prime evidence at how Gawker's works. They take dumb shit and make money off of it.
Wow. So how long until Kotaku reports about Jaffe "attacking" Giantbomb on twitter? lol

Unless you know something I don't, I think that's a pretty ridiculous statement to make. Written content has it's own dedicated space on the site, and was given precisely the same exposure as the video content. I'm not even sure what you're arguing here. Was he under some mandate to only produce video content?

This has nothing to do with exposure. All I said is that one of the reasons for him joining Kotaku might be that he wants to fully dedicate his career to being a journalist instead of a Giant Bomb personality (for lack of a better term). Yes, part of your job at Giant Bomb is producing video content, simple as that. I don't see how it is ridiculous to assume he might have stopped caring about creating Quick Looks and the likes and thus sees Kotaku, an outlet dedicated to the written word, as a better home for him than Giant Bomb. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I don't quite understand why you can't even see it as a possibility.

I only skimmed it, but from that and the section you quoted it read like very typical 'pump up the troops' kind of stuff (not to mention eye-rollingly self inflating). Will you guys make more money by having more 'hard hitting stories' and less shit 'top 10 anime figurines that eat black Burger King burgers!' lists? Traffic and revenue being up, despite missing out on major stories apparently, was featured very prominently so it's hard to believe that if you guys all go after pet scoops that don't generate increased traffic/revenue you won't see your leashes reined in on pursuing journalist stuff (whatever that really means when it comes to tech/games/entertainment).
Yesterday we ran an article on our top 100 stories of 2014, by traffic: http://kotaku.com/kotakus-100-most-popular-posts-of-2014-1676868525

Lots of great stories on there, many of them based on original reporting and criticism. The intersection between good work and high traffic is bigger than many people realize.

I don't think he stopped caring but its just his current environment doesn't allow him to do it to the level GB fans expect (Quick Look Solos were interesting but eh plus he would have to find guests with free time for a usual Quick look to work).

Good for him. I look forward to reading what he has to say via GAF. As in, I will wait for gaf to tell me that Pat has something good to read and then I will go to kotaku and read it

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
Did he kill your dog or something?

...Or maybe I am not a fan of most of the content he produced? I don't wish him any ill will, dudes been through a lot in the past three years and I hope 2015 is kind to him.

Uh, which reality do you live in where he endlessly writes about Gamergate issues? I don't even remember an article compared to all the others he did over the 4 years.

Well.. I feel like posting that gif from curb your enthusiasm at this point.

I guess I'll hear from him about as much as I did when he was at mtv games. When someone makes a neogaf thread about his stories.

If he products a podcast or something I'm game but holy crap why would he ever leave giant bomb the best gaming site there ever will be.

Didn't read that carefully, that's good to hear!

With Jason and Patrick there I've now bookmarked Kotaku for the first time.

I like both of their work and what they do is unique in this industry of copy/paste PR release journalism.

Oh I agree, they should have never brought Patrick. Never wanted him then, don't want him now. The core 4 is all they needed, but I can't blame them for trying to expand a bit and feel out a different style of site content. I remember Nicholson's 0 comment articles lol..

I just think of all the places to go, GB to Kotaku, it's such a downgrade. It was obviously just the easiest way to work from home.

I liked Patrick, but he didn't fit in for me honestly.

I really disagree. I liked having him on the bombcast a lot. He brought up great points and could always articulate why he liked or didn't like a game.

I'm interested to see his work, not really interested in marketing journalists as personalities though, which on Day 1 at least seems to be the point for Kotaku. We need far, far less of that in this industry and far more people going in, doing good reporting and not angling for community manager jobs.

If his investigative work is good though, I'm excited.

From Patrick

I'll be doing some streaming and other video and podcast-related stuff on the site, so if reading Kotaku isn't your bag, there'll be other options.

Oh, never mind. Not especially interested at all.

Is this some type of joke? If it is a joke disregard my post.

Kotaku contrary to what people on this forum think has always had the honor of not being as terrible as people on this site seem to think.

After the new editor, a lot of former kotaku staffers went to Polygon.

The best just got better. ;)

Went over to Kotaku to see if maybe I need to give it another chance:

"Pre-Order: 55% off the Limited Edition Code Black Drone W/ HD Camera"
"9 Video Games That Left Us Defenseless and Scared"
"I Finished These 26 Video Games in 2014"
"Get 15% Off 3 Months Plan Of Loot Crate's Geek & Gamer Box"
"Pass Go and Collect 200 Rupees, 33% off Shovel Knight, and More Deals"
"Neill Blomkamp's Secret Alien Movie Looks So Good We're Furious"
"Giving Money as a Gift, Turned into an Art Form"
"The MacGyver intro without music is hilariously ridiculous"
"Hot Toys' Darth Vader Is Impressive, Most Impressive"
"Year-End Cosplay in Japan: The Cute, the Sexy, the Weird"

Best of luck to you, Patrick.

To be fair, I'm pretty mad about Blomkamp's alien movie. I went to bed steaming after reading "I don't think I'm working on this anymore."

Yup. And written content is what I prefer.

Good move, and good luck to Patrick.

At Kotaku, once I get past the Gawker nonsense, I only ever read stuff by Jason and Stephen, which is quite often top notch. I guess I'll add Patrick to that mix. The rest of their writers are not bad writers, but the subject matter ranges from forgettable (Luke) to downright atrocious (the Ashcraft guy and Patricia in a race towards the very bottom, in that regard).

You should read stuff by me. GAF seems to like what I've written. :)

I like Patrick, and I wish him the best, but there's really little he can do to make me start visiting Kotaku again.

Good luck, Scoops.

While I'm not in the least bit surprised that Patrick left GiantBomb, I am really surprised he would work for a company like Gawker. It just seems at odds with the type of views he has, or at least portrays. I'm not saying there are not quality pieces of Kotaku, it just takes a lot of searching to find them. They really seem to be a quantity over quality in terms of content. At least you can always use Kotakucore if you want to avoid some of the BS.

That being said, I wish the best to Patrick and hope he finds what he is looking for.

Should've been obvious in hindsight. Kotaku has been pretty decent for a while now, and they do break many stories and are obviously more into doing investigative journalism than Giant Bomb, which is in Patrick's wheelhouse. Good luck to him.

Yeah, I don't think he would've necessarily left had he not moved to Chicago. 'Stopped caring' was a poor choice of words, I don't think he doesn't enjoy creating video content at all or anything but his current situation simply isn't optimal and doesn't allow him to contribute to Giant Bomb in satisfactory fashion (not only to his fans, but in a way that he himself enjoys too).

Sad now I will never read anything new by him again :/ but I wish him the best.

Kotaku on the other hand..Was a big fan for some time of kotaku in 2013 and beginning of 2014 but after some article..gosh I hate kotaku and just want it to go down forever.

It's funny actually. He's excellent at talking about games on the bombcast, but his writing always comes off as self-absorbed.

Kinda figured it would be either polygon or kotaku, no surprise here.

As someone who really likes Giant Bomb, doesn't care for Patrick's work, and doesn't visit Gawker sites, this is pretty perfect.

Huh interesting choice. Will be interesting to see what he brings to Kotaku. Can he elevate them away from the ridicule the majority of the internet direct at Kotaku?
