I thought most plasmas have a built in screen saver thingy you can run for 10 mins after watching something that leaves IR? Mine certainly does (not that I've used it much) - the key with plasma is to 'wear it in' - worked a treat for me.

They do, it absolutely does not clear IR like extensively playing Destiny leaves in a mere 10 minutes. They're also not very effective and something like the Disney WOW disc Pixel Flipper works a lot better.

IR duration depends a lot on what type of image was displayed (color, brightness, etc) and how long it was displayed for. Most things fade pretty fast, the worst things (Destiny) can take months to clear.

Do the ghosting/image trail artifacts visible when using the Impulse motionflow option in Sony TVs get worse over time, or is it just my imagination? They were always there before but they seem to look more visible now. Could it be something bad introduced with a recent firmware update?

It could very well be a model that isn't sensitive to Destiny's HUD. It does wreck a lot of TVs pretty badly though.

If you have a John Lewis near you i'd recommend visiting their store as the customer service is just superb. They will go out of their way to answer questions and demonstrate the sets; seem to be clued up on things like input lag. They even told me to bring my PS4 next time if l wanted to test input lag with any of the TV's.

I find it really hard to judge TVs instore - they usually look good due to lighting etc but when home you notice little things you couldn't see instore

The Samsung TVs with the evolution kit is the only hardware upgradable TV on the market, afaik. I upgraded by 2013-model 65" F9000 4k to a 2014 model with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 and 4k Netflix by just getting a new evolution kit box. I specifically chose the Samsung because of the upgradeability.

Just to chime in a chronicle my pain.

I finally decided to pull the trigger on the 4K Sony Bravia 55X9005B. Been saving up for over 18 months, some obstacles were on the way as well. Finally decided to go and buy it last Friday.

Everything went smooth and the TV was delivered the very next morning (Saturday). Assembled it and started tinkering with my devices. Very soon I started noticing some vertical lines near the middle of the TV. Played FC4 on PS4 and there was a line cutting the skybox in half all the time. Tried the 3D blu-ray of Pacific Rim and there was a beam of light coming from the bottom of the screen all the time. Depending on the scene light, the beam would be shorter or longer.

I grew increasingly worried about this. Finally I started poking around all the menus and realized that there were two vertical lines being displayed all the time. Depending on the backlight, they'd cover the entirety of the screen or just some section.

Here's a picture of what the problem looked like:

Went to the store on Sunday evening. Described the problem. The store clerk was understanding and said that they'd arrange for transportation to the repairshop. But he said that I would have to repack the TV. Which was a nightmare to do just by myself.

This morning a man came by and picked the box up. When I described the issue to him, he said that I would probably simply receive a new device - since noone is going to repair the 4K panels around here.

So now I am waiting for the store's/repairshop's response.

Will keep you posted. Somewhat sad that this has to be my first foray into the 4K world.

I have heard good things about John Lewis, and they seem to offer lengthy warranty with new products. Sadly, I don't have a John Lewis near me, but I will have to try and visit the closest one when I can.

you're entitled to a brand new replacement anyway - I wouldn't want some repaired TV back...I've seen the way they are treated!

you might be on slightly sticky ground for "accepting a repair" - but if I were you I'd be at the store demanding a replacement - it's your right - but maybe first get your old TV back to take to the store!!

Agreed, an issue like that right out of the box should just get a replacement. I don't think you would even need to wait to hear from them, you should just be able to request them to send a new one.

Not all, only the mid to high end TVs. I think quite a few have it, so make sure to check before buying.

Some time after posting the anguished reply above, I got a call from the repairs company engineer. He was very polite, very professional. I described the issue to him and ended up emailing him the same picture I posted here. Just a few minutes after that, he called me back and said that he was able to reproduce the issue. And that he'd be filing a replacement claim with Sony.

However, due to the amount of red tape involved, I will not be getting the replacement unit until next week.

Well, I guess I'll post here again once I receive the replacement.

Well, no, that is what I did. I went to the store, the store sent over the guy who took the TV to the repairshop (because the shop itself does not have a reclamation station), the repairshop has a direct contract with the store and with Sony itself.

Plus the EU customer rights etc.

What's the best cheap 32" TV? I'm really not concerned with display lag unless it's really bad. I was thinking about getting a 2012 Samsung UN32EH5000 for $210. I wanted it because it's cheapish for a 32" 1080p, but maybe I should I just stick with a 720p at that size and not worry about 1080p?

Basically I want the best I can get for around $200.

No worries. Whereas I am sure that the United Kingdom and Estonia should share some EU regulation customer rights, I am also fairly certain that the actual regulations enforced by the retailers themselves are rather different.

And, for reasons of living standards and customer numbers, Estonian customers get less preferential treatment at times.

Sounds good to me. Usually I probably will be a decent distance away from it but I went ahead and ordered it anyway. I figure if I don't like it for whatever reason I'll return it and find something better. It'll certainly be better than my piece of garbage 23" Haier TV that died on me after a year..

I still don't get this whole thing with plasmas and burn in. I bought a 480p plasma when they very first came on the market, and while it had ghosting, the ghosting was never permanent and faded within minutes of doing something else.

My current plasma I've owned for nearly 10 years, and 90% of its use is for gaming, and I've had zero ghosting instances with it, ever. Not even when it was brand-new during the "break in" phase.

It's a Panasonic FWIW... I don't even know if they still make plasmas these days since I haven't been on the market for a new TV for the past 10 years.

Samsung is getting there with their early 4k models. I think I read about a model with like 40ms in game mode.

No plasmas aren't being really made any more. LG has a few 2014 models, not sure who else if any.

Still able to buy them though once they pop up now and then. There was a few times you could buy F8500's recently in the 51" for just a grand.

Some static stuff doesn't effect my Panasonic ST60 at all. I can leave this year's Awesome Games Done Quick event with all its borders and overlay stuff on all day and there's no IR at all from it. It's really a case by case basis thing. Depending on what you play and what your Plasma is sensitive to you may *never* see it. On the other hand if you mostly play stuff that it's very sensitive to you might *constantly* see it.

They also seem to be far more sensitive to things when they're brand new. Most things became a non-issue for me sometime after my ST60 hit 2000 hours.

And here's an example of varying sensitivity: I recently just played through all of Sleeping Dogs DE on my PS4 in a couple days. At first the Red health bar left pretty obvious IR, but when I maxed my health out and turned it fully Blue it never left any IR again. The only IR from the game ended up being the little Bright Silver lines in the Health/Mini-map HUD and they were lightly visible if I looked for them for a couple days until they fully faded.

Usually my ST60 is very sensitive to Bright Whites, Reds, and Yellows. Though, back to the AGDQ overlay on it - despite Whites usually leaving pretty obvious IR, the just slightly off-white they're using, possibly because it's surrounded by a lot of Grey which my ST60 doesnt pick up at all, isn't leaving even the faintest bit of IR. Same with all the turquoise border lines they're using, no effect. I am finding that it's also sensitive to Silver-ish stuff though. The IR with Sleeping Dogs DE's HUD lasted for a couple days as I said and the Time Counter on Super Mario Bros U was visible for a while as well.

So overall my Panasonic is pretty good with IR for me. I've only ran into "bad" IR twice ever on it and that was with Destiny and Dead Island Riptide, as those are the only games I've played on it with very Bright Red, White, and/or Yellow static HUD pieces. I don't how other Panasonics fair though and what colors they're sensitive to though. It wouldn't surprise me if it varied a lot from model to model or even from individual set to set.

While they will, so far the majority of the announced 2015 models will NOT do 4k at 60fps at full 4:4:4 chroma level. Meaning that they don't have full speed HDMI 2.0 ports. Right now, the only way to get 4k, 60fps with full 4:4:4 chroma is using a Panasonic 4k TV since it has display port.

I don't understand how some companies are still using the same HDMI 2.0 ports as last year models for the 2015 line. I have read the spec sheets for all the 2015 Sony models and NONE of them can do 4k, 60fps at 4:4:4 chroma which is a shame and disappointment to many.

I'd rather spend the same amount of money and get a better 55" Sony.

nice hit I didn't know you was a BB associate, that's pretty cool and I pretty much live in there. I bought two KDL-W700B Sony Bravia TVs from them one open boxed and one brand new. What procedures do they go threw before selling a open box TV? are they usually repaired refurbished TVs that get tested by BB before they hit the sales floor or what? My open box tv looks just as good as my new one. I have a set in my living room and bed room.

I bought the 60" Sony KDL60W850B and the first one was damaged as it was their last one at the Best Buy and the corner of the box was damaged, but there was so much packing in it that we thought it was ok. We unpack it, in the middle of the TV where the Sony symbol is at, the bezel was coming off of the TV screen just in a small section.

There were no other stores in my area that had this TV left in stock, all sold out probably due to the sale on it. Then I had to drive 35-40 minutes away to another BBY which had 4-5 in stock to get it exchanged. From there, we unpack this second one and my wall mount wouldn't work with it due to the screws not being the same as what I used for the Panny G20 so we just put the feet on it and stuck it on the TV stand. We prefer wall mounted, but on the TV stand it actually doesn't look that bad.

Any suggestions for basic starter settings? The set is in a basement with low lighting and would like to get this somewhat close to what I had with my plasma. I understand no 2 environments are the same and would like to get some kind of starter settings to work with.

After a few days I've started to get adjusted to the LED over the awesome blacks and natural image of the plasma. At first I started missing the plasma, but since we wanted to go with a larger TV as the Panny is 50" had to make that slight sacrifice.

Now to try and sell the Panny.

I'm the opposite. Never hear buzzing but IR is a problem. Nothing permanent but enough to give me pause for long gaming sessions. Then I play video content and realize why I am sticking with my Panny plasma. The black levels and shadow detail are unmatched on any display including 2014/15 sets.

I loved the picture quality though so I want something with comparable image quality. I will do a lot of gaming on this TV. My budget is $1500.

Yea, I'm just a seasonal employee. Good chance for great discounts on stuff and to nerd out about Tvs. When a TV comes back to the store and if it's open they move it over to Geek Squad. From there the Geek Squad will take it out of the box and inspect it, if it was returned because of a manufacturing flaw they will ship it right back to the company. So all the open box items which are out there were returned within 15 days because the purchaser didn't like it, wanted a bigger/smaller one, or changed their mind. It's a good way to get a nice price on the TV. The open box Sony 700 series were a steal.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can find something with comparable IQ to a Panny Plasma

For $1500 you should be able to find a good 50" LED. I prefer Samsung for LCDs just because they are all I have bought in the past.

My Panasonic G25 50" plasma just hit the 4 year mark in October and still going strong. Such an amazing set, makes watching LCDs hard to do.

This. It's ridiculous to have a brand new item you paid thousands for ripped apart in a local shop. My local shops are horrible.

Samsung sent a guy to work on my tv, which he laid face down on what was seriously a painters cloth, paint splashes and all. When he needed to get to screws on the other side, he spun the tv on the cloth. He scratched the hell out of my tv. I ended up throwing him out. Samsung tried to tell me I should sue the shop and that they won't cover physical damage. I kept emailing and calling and they finally agreed to replace it. Now I buy my tv's from Amazon only, as they have a great replacement policy.

Damn dude that sucks. Unfortunately I don't think you're going to find something of comparable image quality in that price range unless you find an amazing sale or wait for Black Friday. My advice would be to be as Patient as you possibly can and keep on the look out for a great deal.
