PSV Exclusive SAO: Hollow Fragment Sold 450K WW (280K JPN, 90K Asia, 70K NA)

I'm actually somewhat disappointed. I was hoping it would reach .5 mil. Not that far off but still. :/

Um... she is related. She's his cousin. Unless they changed that for the game. idr

It's legal in many countries for first cousins to marry (including a few states in the US) so it's unrelated enough.

Are people really that math illiterate? If it sold 450k worldwide with 280k coming from Japan, 90k elsewhere in Asia and 70k in North America, that leaves 10k copies sold in Europe.

That 10k difference probably comes down to roundings. (Edit: beaten). I doubt it only sold that, it was high on EU's PSN charts.
How about you drop the high and mighty attitude?

I'm pretty happy at the results, and I'm sorry I didn't contribute. It might be strange, but it was the digital-only release that stopped me from buying it rather than the Engrish translation(I can get over it without no problem). I regret not getting it when it was discounted at €25, so I hope they handle a physical release for Lost Song in Europe (Bamco please do not follow the Sega route)

DENGEKI SALES - Sword Art Online - 267.696 (physical only)

So 13k digital sales in Japan? Looks very low. Vita games ranges to 9 to 15% of physical/digital ratio on bigger games.

Are people unable to read? :) It is almost impossible to only have sold 10k when it was in the VITA charts all the time (even on the first place for 2 months!)

Digital sales here generally happen when someone cant get a physical copy and wants to play the same day it comes out.

That's just for Asia though

Yeah, a western release is pretty much a lock at this point though since Hollow Fragment sold better than they expected. They're bringing Pirate Warriors 3 for Vita over too, so it seems like Bamco is warming back up to the system in the west.

Picked up the game by accident (odd story) I played a little of it and it had an awful translation.

I was genuinely surprised when they strung 3 sentences together with proper grammar and spelling.

Hopefully that convinces some major Japanese companies that western sales are non-negligible for some niche games, so that they put more effort in their localization divisions.

I've wanted to try this game for awhile now.. Despite to really crappy translations, does the game have a good story and is the gameplay fun?

Not only that, but hopefully we can get the games at all! I mean, digital is OK, but with the VITA's $hitty storage system, getting physical copies would be great. I just hope Tales of Hearts R did well enough for Bamco to send over Tale sof Innoscence and others.

Just do it like I did (and many others), import a physical asia english version

Too bad Mahouka looks to be a kusoge instead of a legitimately well-produced title like the SAO games.

The story is decent, the gameplay is quite fun though. You'll probably get more out if it if you're a fan of the anime/novels.
Is the Western translation the same as the Asian version?

I wanna get this game despite the anime being shit.
The translation is somewhat improved for the western version (no more "penetration" where it should say progression, etc.) but it's not a ton better overall.

70k sounds... kinda bad actually. Especially considering how the game has been charting for every month since its release. That means overall Vita game sales figures are even worse than I thought.

Any word on PSTV compatibility?

It's compatible and works pretty well.

I'd also like to add that I only picked the game up a few days ago and I've been pretty impressed with how much I'm enjoying the game. Despite the fact that I disliked everything passed the second half of season 1 and the bad localization, the game is really fun. Also captures the mmo feel really well.

I just like jrpgs in general, especially if they have a good story. If the story can be played through without being complete fan service to the anime, I will probably pick it up next time it goes on sale.

Its more they need to stop lowballing with contracts and actually pay more attention to who they hire to do the translations. Basically you get what you pay for. The even better part was when we had someone saying that the US release was not going to be the Asian translations, which did not happen either. So no wonder why they went into hiding after.

The fact that they literally dragged the Asian release over to the US, proof of that is from reports of users saying the X and O are reversed just goes to show that they used the same version too as normally during the localization process for the West its

X = Confirm, O = Cancel.

Where in Japan / Asia its

O = Confirm, X = Cancel.

I seriously do not know how the fuck that passed with the Sony checks. Unless BanNam specifically asked for it to be waived and Sony agreed due to them wanting more games on the system.

One of the better things was how the EU community manager said the following.

The western translation will be different :)

But the case in point when the game came out was that it pretty much was the half-assed Asian version. Know the guy was trying to do his best and all and still kept in contact with the community when he could, but man did the dude get burned by his own company with that one.

It doesn't have a good story. It's basically a giant what if scenario for SAO. The game is almost devoid of story if you haven't watched the anime. The most interesting thing in the game is probably the ability to change the default
Kirito Asuna
relationship.

Hopefully this means we will see localization of the much better looking ALO sequel. Also, hopefully this means that will receive a halfway decent translation.

Isn't this that pretty bad game with awful translation?

Well, I can see why people would like the game itself(personally I feel it's a bit middling). As for the translation, yeah it's god awful. To be honest, considering the product that it is, that's a pretty good number.

Dawg if you are curious what it looks like on the PSVTV

Thats my vid. Let me tell you using a DS3 to play helps a lot. lol The game play has had some slight adjustments with skills and other whatnots so things may be a little faster now as this video was pre-patch (large content update) that had a ton of gameplay fixes and improvements asides from new endgame contents.

The only people who called it a bad game I can assure you were those who could not wrap their heads around the battle system / did not progress very far into the title itself. There is a lot to get used to so people dropping out even before it starts is not really surprising either. But for those who have experience with playing MMOs and such a lot of the general ideas behind the gameplay / combat will become second nature.

This game has one of the best battle systems in a long while.

I initially imported this for collection purposes more than anything (English-language physical Vita games only released in Asia don't happen too often), but was pleasantly surprised with it. The hilariously terrible translation made things even better. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Bring on Lost Song.

I'll get around to playing SSD one day, I swear

The controls are actually enhanced if you play it on the PS TV. You can use L2 and R2 to zoom the camera in and out. Not a huge deal, but it was nice.

The game has been updated recently? Was the U.S. version updated?

Corn this game combat wise is skill based. If you are good enough and do not have too insane of a level diff gap its highly possible to kill monsters way over your level. But screwing up or taking a hit at the wrong time will get you killed pretty quick. It does most def reward skill and the feeling knowing you make it through a hard fight is great.

Though there is a lot to learn and take in since there are tons of skills and you will have to get used to using them all on the fly, which includes bringing up the full skill menu which you will see in the video I linked earlier. Granted its from the JP version, but you will see what combat looks like / skill use. So knowing what everything does is important.

The whole working on buffs / debuffs / stunning the enemy / knowing when to heal etc is all there.

For a digital exclusive game, I think that's OK. I mean, digital sales in US is larger than all other areas. But as a indication of PSN sales? Yep, isn't that good really.

The sequel better have proper touchscreen support. pretty infuriating for a game with so much skills and management that there is barely any touchscreen implementations.

Are you sure? 70k in 5 months is pretty high for a jrpg that is not Final Fantasy in the US. Especially since it's digital only.

Seems pretty good for a niche digital only Vita title. I can't get into the anime at all though. Gave up after 4 episodes.

In that case, I might just buy it. I really like the premise of the anime.

Thanks for the vid btw! Really helps.

70k is almost four times what I had imagined, it's that high. It could be the best selling JRPG on the Vita in the west this year.

Come on, how the hell could you consider that an improvement? :p

It's really not, I was mostly just pointing out one of the few differences in the western script. They actually did forget to replace "penetration" in one instance, which was amusing.

The gameplay for SAO: Hollow Fragment is stellar. You have so many different weapons, armors, skills and buffs available and it is completely up to you when and how to use them for best effect. Certain skills and buffs have great synergy when used together, others do not. It is up to you to play and find learn what works and when you get it right you an tackle mobs far, far above your actual level. It's brilliant.

It is a shame about the translation but most of the game is at least coherent, if not proper english. If you are a Sword Art fan it helps but even if you know nothing about the actual franchise the game is still great and chock full of content. It's definitely my GOTY for the Vita.
