Amiibo Discussion Thread 2: I Got 99 Pre-orders But A Rosalina Ain't One

Status
Not open for further replies.
I assume that NoA did a poor job reading the market, since they didn't anticipate how well these would sell. Hence them under-shipping and making enough Amiibos to begin with (with each territory). Then them also discontinuing some etc.

TBH I never know who to blame, so it's prob just best to say Nintendo in general (as a lot of decisions happen in Japan). Although it does seem NoA has some say about their own market (to an extent).

And yeah, in terms of shipments being delayed, no idea who's fault that is. But I still don't understand why Nintendo can't do a better job communicating with their consumers in terms of a general release dates, or a release date for pre-orders. Or maybe pre-order stuff is 100% on the retailers (in terms of what day they can start opening them. Not sure if they need permission from Nintendo). If that's the case, then retailers have 100% failed people. Maybe all of this is on the retail side of things. I do know that, retail relies on Nintendo to give them shipping info (when they can get them to them, and Nintendo also sets the sale date). So that is why I'm putting some blame on Nintendo, as I have to assume Retailers to some extent, wait for Nintendo for that info.

Either way, this whole thing has been a mess. It's poorly run, and there is almost never any info. Just kind of happens. I've never seen something this bad before. So that is why I assume, Nintendo partially plays a role in this having issues. But again, maybe I'm wrong.

I honestly believe Europe just isn't selling as many and that's why there are so many in stores.

I honestly believe Europe just isn't selling as many and that's why there are so many in stores.

Yeah probably true. But I don't get why Nintendo has been so hush on addressing the shortages, and not telling people whether things are REALLY discontinued, or whether they will make more. Marth was the first time they said they were doing a re-print, and that was partly because of Project Steam.

I could understand if these were collectors items, but these are supposed to be a platform (like Skylanders). There is no excuse for these to be so limited, and for them not to make more. And they have been awful and telling us what the situation is.

Lol Bowser already sold out hahaha

I mean, shit like this is crazy. Pre-orders themselves selling out in 15 min. Like holy fuck. Nintendo isn't coming anywhere close to meeting the demand.

I'll remove you from the Google Doc then (we have this same list there).

Ok, well I was hoping to get on the document to start helping/swapping with others when my amiibos start arriving. Sorry, not familiar with the doc and don't mean to confuse anything, I was just clarifying I'm not in Canada and wouldn't want to somehow come into possession of a Rosalina from the help of fellow Gaffers thinking I live there.

Just got back from my local EB Games (NZ) preordered Robin, Lucina, Pacman, Ness, SM Peach and SM Toad ^_^

I'd love to be able to help send any amiibos to anyone who needs them but living here makes it less than ideal to. I wish I could participate more in the community in terms of hunting or general talk but we don't get much options here. You either preorder or you pay scalpers (even then there's only like 5 being sold by scalpers here).

So I'll just send positive thoughts and energies to you guys in NA/EU/wherever you are. GL hunting everyone! Hope you guys' preorders come up soon so you can rest easy
till someone screws up and cancels all your orders.

Ok, AmiiboGaf, off for the night (and probably most of tomorrow, although I'll try and lurk when I can). Here's hoping those pre-orders show up at a time when most of us are on!

You can still be on the document. That was just ONE section. There is a main section for everyone. PM me your gmail and I'll add you now. Sorry if my post was confusing. If you don't have a gmail, then PM me the following:

Username:
Amiibos Needed:
Location:
Extra Amiibos you are willing to trade or sell.

^ Only send me that info if you don't have a gmail account. Then I'll have to add it myself manually. If that is the case, I'll PM you a link to the document as well, but don't share that link with anyone.

I'll just insert my name into that

Added you to the google doc version too!

From Iwata's statement about limited-time Amiibos and Miyamoto's statement on how they will handle retired Amiibo figures, they are certainly being treated like collector items. They already have the perfect solution for anyone who couldn't obtain their desired Amiibo figures with Amiibo cards.

With Bowser Amiibos for example:

Once the Bowser Smash version sells out, will they have any incentive to produce more of them once the Bowser Mario Party 10 version launch when both will have exactly the same functions?

I think we could be looking at a situation where the Mario series Amiibos in Smash can get discontinued as they push the Amiibos for Mario Party 10.

Ness, Wario and Charizard for me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Fire Emblem but with limited disposable money atm I prefer concentrating on the figures that have a slight chance of being less available in the future (although with MP10 Wario will be there and maybe Charizard when the next Pokemon game comes out...), the FE guys will come back for Steam and again for the New Fire Emblem 3DS game, so I'll be able to buy them in the future

It would explain why it seems yoshi is getting more difficult to find. Same with Mario despite his quantity I see less and less of him

Well then that's dumb. Why make a platform with limited things you need to use them.

I just think Nintendo likes the frenzy. It makes their stuff look in high demand and valuable. It's happened over and over and over where it must be intentional.

I just don't see the point in trying to launch a platform and making the things needed to use it - limited. Think about it. Smash has an Amiibo feature, and for most people, they won't ever be able to use a feature in the game because they made the things needed to use it...limited. That is crazy to me.

And I assume in the future they will make more software and games based around it. I'm cool with Amiibos being collectors items. I'm treating them that way, certainly. But it feels like they are shooting themselves in the foot in terms of it being an actual platform *shrugs*

I understand Nintendo's limited printing for certain amiibo. If Villager, Marth, Wii Fit Trainer, Pit, Little Mac, and Captain Falcon were as common as Mario, Luigi, Peach, etc., they wouldn't sell and I know Nintendo really values their shelf space.

I dont think nintendo thought about people collecting alot of them. At this point comparitivly how many amiibo habe sold per copy of smash? This is something I'd like to know my money is 3figures to 1 copy.

I don't get why they don't just keep producing more though. I had never seen that Iwata interview, but he views them as limited collectible. Just is weird to me given what they wanted Amiibos to be. It's them not reacting and adjusting that is strange to me.

Pretty sure there was a thread here that said it was 2:1.

EDIT: From the NPD thread.

Wii U:

Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold over 1.7 million physical and digital units and 1.3 million physical and digital units, respectively, in 2014.
Total sales of amiibo figures in 2014 are nearly twice the sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

I think it's a little more complicated than that. Like, amiibos aren't really limited overall, so pretty much anyone can take advantage of those features. Anyone could train one, get the wheel in Hyrule Warriors, or get a costume in MK8.

The biggest problem is, the main feature is involved in a game, where you're supposed to be able to play as or with your favorite characters. When you can't play with your favorite, or get the costumes for your favorite, or even have your favorite in the game (Codename STEAM), that's a massive problem, and something they need to fix.

This is pretty much it. Once they're gone they're mostly likely gone... That is until a new figure/pose comes along to replace it.

I'm just curious as to what series the other silhouettes on the Hori Amiibo Case will be part of. Will each of those games (Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Zelda, 80s looking Bowser and Metroid) get their own Amiibo run too or will they fall under the general "Super Mario" Amiibo Series?

They are limited like in the grand scheme of things. Some Smash Amiibos were gone early on and never went back in stock. They had lower stock. I agree a lot of the main Amiibos can be found and thus people can use the features. But for Smash you have a lot of people that probably won't ever have access to 30-40% of the roster. Forever. Like the entire lifespan, a feature of the game can't be completely used. That is crazy to me. And it won't ever change as they won't make more.

The idea of these being limited means, there is finite time to using a % of a feature. And again that is strange to me. I get them wanting to phase out Amiibos to make new lines. But they should support games that have come out. So for Smash, they should have done a re-print for the first year of release. Then moved on as stock sold out. Some of these Amiibos disappeared early on and weren't ever coming back.

which all immediately sell out ._.

Amazon.it cancelled my

Sonic
King Dedede
Mega-Man

preorders and gave me a 5€ discount voucher instead.
I'm so fucking disappointed, sob, Mega-Man and King were my top two most wanted Amiibos since the beginning together with Samus and Ness.

I'm furious :( I thought I had those on lock, I could've just reserved them at GameStop like I did for Shulk and Meta Knight if I knew it in time.
Third time Amazon screws with me in just a few months, first it was Bayo First Print Edition on Amazon.fr which cancelled my order without even giving me a discount voucher and shit, then Diddy coming in a destroyed package and now this. Why.

Sure.

I mean, I think they actually have heft given the price. But I agree with you. But I just mean for the price. Imagine $30-40 Amiibos with bigger size and weight. Would people prefer that over the $12 smaller stuff?

Would be harder to collect the entire series at that price point though.

The big problem with Amiibo - Nintendo's making way too many characters too fast. Disney Infinity and DI 2.0 each have ~ 30 characters. Skylanders 1 had 32. Amiibo is already at 41, and we still have ~ 15 more Smash characters to go. They just don't have the time to reprint ones or make adequate stock, as they keep having to move to the next wave.

I actually had really good luck with Amiibo at Target, I walked in a few days after release and the place was barren, managed to pick up Little Mac and Diddy straight off the shelf. Was hoping I'd be able to do that again for the next wave but alas...

I agree. Nintendo could really stretch the longevity of Smash, especially during the dry months by bringing out waves of amiibo at a much slow pace.

I don't know what this is for, but sure

It's only for Candian users that can't get access to Rosalina now that Target has closed all stores (Rosalina was exclusive to Target).

If you want to be added to a list for the overall thread, there is a private Google document for the thread that lists all the members and which Amiibos they need to finish their collection and the extra Amiibos they are willing to sell or trade with other members. It's just a resource. Like you can look at the list and PM someone that has something you need.

Pm me your Gmail address if you want to be added.

Anyone else wish amiibos were a little bigger and had more weight to them? They feel really cheap compared to the infinity characters I've been buying lately, they feel durable and I feel like I'm getting more for my money figure wise.

I have somewhat similar feelings. I admire that Nintendo took the effort to recreate each Smash character's pose, but some of them just plain aren't suited for a figure. (Link, Pit, and Wii Fit Trainer look especially breakable) I don't really mind since for me they are a collector's item, but I wouldn't buy a majority of them for a little kid just in fear that they would feel crushed if they broke it while playing around. (Moving my open collection of Amiibo in a year's time is going to be a nightmare for me)

I was listening to a show over the weekend where Amiibos were being talked about, and someone made an interesting point how the Disney Infinity team had to do stress tests for each character to make sure that their design and pose suited a durable figure. I've thought about getting some of them in the past but backed out due to Amiibo being on the horizon, but maybe I will pick up a favorite Marvel character just to see. As for future lines, the Super Mario line looks like they have much better poses. However, they are still going off old artwork rather than building them from the ground up which is disappointing.

Learned my lesson with not adding tracking when I decided to help someone get a Captain Falcon amiibo.

Not going to bother being an amiigo, as my time is going to be taken up with school.

Anyone else wish amiibos were a little bigger and had more weight to them?

I like the size. I don't want huge toys littering the place. I'd even like them smaller.
I do think they could be higher quality, of course.

I'm not really the target audience, though. Throughout the life of Amiibos I might have one or two, at most.

Disney infinity figures are the same price but a higher quality/larger figure. I love the little paint details on the amiibos though fox is a good example.

Side note: going to stop running the Canadian list on the Google doc. Seems like the person running the list and the overall community wants to use this thread instead to do it. No one has added anything for that section, I've been updating everyone. Seems dead in the water there. Probably just going to remove it.

Which is fine. If the thread is eaiser to use, it's better to go with what's easier to use.

EDIT: just decided to remove it. No one was using it.

That's kind of disappointing to hear tbh. Nintendo being cheap :(
