So if Solid Snake and Solidus are both clones...

How is it Solid Snake never noticed the President of the United States looked exactly like him? You'd think that would be disquieting to him, especially after he meets Liquid who also looks like him, yet it never comes up as a topic of discussion in MGS1.

Its made clear quite a few times that only Solidus is a true clone of Big Boss. The other two Snakes are weird pick-and-chooses of Big Boss' genes. "Clones" in that they use the same gene base, but Solid and Liquid are both engineered.

You don't need to come up with shitty explanations using Nanomachines. This is literally something in the MGS series that makes "sense", aside from technology of the eighties being super-advanced in terms of genetic engineering, and highly suspect interpretation of recessive vs. dominant genes.

Something like that, yes.

In the mission brief videos Snake immediately notices Liquid looks like him so Snake cuts his hair. The Patriots could have ratcheted up Solidus accelerated aging if they had the goal of him being president from the beginning. Solid Snake was also a hermit in Alaska training sled dogs at the time.

Yeah, but young Big Boss pooked just like Solid no? Solidus being the perfect clone would mean he matched Big Boss" looks through his life, thus meaning he looked line Solid too.

Solid snake is the kind of guy who doesn't give a fuck about politics.

I understand the actual explanation, but I always imagined that this was the "real" answer.

On a serious note: Whoever wrote the script for Liquid's lamentations in MGS1 didn't understand the scientific significance of dominant and recessive genes. Liquid used it like a quality declaration, unless Big Boss just happened to have only "good" dominant genes and "flawed" recessive genes.

Nanomachines.

Yep, explains everything.

Snake should still have figured something was wrong when he saw the news and found out the POTUS looked exactly like Big Boss, though.

The real answer to this question is that trying to take the stuff in MGS2 literally can lead to lots of headache.

Edit: A beard is the ultimate disguise, apparently.

MGS2 is amazing.

Also wasn't Solid Snake secluded in Alaska for a long period of time before the events of MGS1?

Liquid isn't good at biology

No one likes a doppelganger.

When you hear a friend say 'I saw someone who was your spitting image', do you recoil in terror believing no one on the planet looks like you?

My guess is Otacon nudged him reading the newspaper, and was like 'Wow doesn't he look exactly like you? He could be your Twin Snake!'. Snake responded with a grunt and a guttural croaky 'Hell no', and secretly vowed never to look at the President's picture again, going so far as re-purpose his cardboard box to help him avoid his eyes making contact with election posters in public.

But he does look like him. An older version.
Edit: derp I misread the question. But my answer still kinda applies. He looks like an older version and I suppose that's not immediately recognizable.

Bit off topic but Solidus was a perfect clone of Big Boss in the eyes of the patriots, gene for gene and how they thought Big Boss was suppose to be but he wasn't a true clone it couldn't be done, but it's Solids inperfections that made him more alike to Snake eventhou they're different.

Anyway OP got a point, Solid should have recognize himself in him or more noticeably Big Boss

He was living in Alaska for many years, probably had no idea who George Sears was or anything about current politics.

Solidus was a perfect clone in terms of having the exact balance of solider genes, both the dominant and recessive ones, but that doesn't necessarily mean he has the exact same genes overall as big boss. Add in the aging, a different hair style, lack of facial hair and other factors and you're going to have something like liquid, someone that may share similar facial features but would probably be passed off as a close relative rather than a mirror image.

From an actual lore perspective solidus was genetically engineered to age much quicker than his "brothers" thus meaning he looked like he was in his late 60's while snake and co were in their late 30's.

That makes sense since Solid (the real recessive gene baby according to Ocelot in the ending codec conversation) won.

He didn't have the eyepatch so he was unrecognizable.

... nah, just kidding, it's nanomachines.

Let's go on: in MGS1 they use the codec, right? Codec doesn't have a screen. Why Liquid felt it was necessary to disguise himself in order to play snake? How did Snake not recognize Miller's voice?

Solid and Liquid don't look 100% like BB, pretty easy to see that in MGS4, only Solidus is the exact clone. Solidus also would have looked a lot older than Solid so it's easy to see him not noticing anything past, "huh, I guess he kinda looks like an older me, maybe".

As for him not noticing the president's resemblance to BB, he probably did but just dismissed it as coincidence.

BB looks older, had a beard and mustache and was missing an eye. Solidus would have looked a little younger, not been as a battle worn, would be clean shaven and still had both eyes, not to mention their competely different demeanors

Solidus looked older, and probably used make up or something.

George Sears' picture in MGS2 looks nothing like Snake, for example.
