I understand that's where it comes from, but that mindset has always kind of confused me. Smash 4 is the newest game in the Smash Bros series...exactly where is its scene supposed to develop from? A mix of series newcomers and series veterans that hop on from playing older Smash games, and that's somehow treated like it's wrong?
It feels like there are a lot of people in the Melee community that have developed a weird sort of victim-complex, having gone for years without getting much help from Nintendo itself in cultivating the scene in the way Capcom supports its fighting communities. Now Smash 4 releases and Nintendo finally wakes up and begins sponsoring events for it...and this is a bad thing? I'm sorry that Nintendo had its head in the sand and didn't give Melee the support it deserved, but I've seen complains about how Smash 4 didn't "earn" its place in the community like Melee had to, and from the perspective of more or less an outsider, that just comes off as a lot of salt and jealousy.

I get the thought of making a "Melee Rules" version, in fact another friend of mine mentioned something along those lines yesterday to me, but putting that together would also involve having to totally retool the game's physics engine, controls, and the timing of characters' movesets...plus if anything that would only encourage the Highlander-esque feuding between sides because it makes it even more likely that only one of those styles would be deemed the "tournament style." For the sort of game that Nintendo wants to make, I don't think that the Melee purists will ever get anything to their liking outside of Melee itself. It's a shame, but it's also easy to lose sympathy when you see attempts to tear down everything coming after it.

Took me way too long to write all that, back to actually watching matches!

What's wrong if they did that and all the players in the world just played the version they preferred? Seems like the best way to do it to make everyone happy?

I'm hoping shroomed wins this but i don't think he can pull it off :(

when was the last time he even fought hbox 1v1

edit: are there even any puffs in norcal?

I've got no clue about the KirbyKaze guy, how's the match up for aMSa?

free for sheik but the same was supposed to apply to fox.

i'm not sure kirbykaze has anything relevant to refer to for help against amsa

ok i've seen this forever but never asked, why do they kill themselves to start a fresh game rather than quitting

but factors like resources and time will play a factor in making this possible and in a developers eyes would it really be all that worth it?

It's just not for me personally, not that it's not competitive. Zero just proved that with his domination, haha.

I just didn't enjoy the pace of the game that I saw today.

I can understand there. Melee isn't for me competitively, and watching the streams actually makes me feel a little sick with the camera moving so much lol.

That would never realistically happen as far as tournament setups goes, though. Would EVO really pick up a theoretical Smash 5 and hold separate "Melee-rules" and "New-rules" tournaments? No, they'd take whichever was deemed more popular and that would become the tourney set.

Not to mention, as far as I'm aware no other fighting game pulls off something like that, trying to support multiple game-styles within the same product. Doing that only further encourages a divide between players, though in the Smash case the divide is already so deep that there probably is no fixing it.

well there is street fighter 4 that does that with being able to play different styles eg you can play pre patch ae yun and af4 sagat though if i recall that stuff is bannnnneeeeddd

Also when random people trash smash 4 or melee, It would help if people didn't think they represented the community and just Isolated them as assholes. It would stop people from feeling the need to attack another games community because there games community was attacked.

Exactly, you can play other character styles for fun's sake but there's still just one established tournament setup, that's the default/most recent renditions of the characters.

Also what the hell happened to the VGBootcamp chat lol. The floodgates.

Incidentally, where the hell did the whole "le Toucan" thing originate from, anyway? I haven't seen it up until, like, a week ago and suddenly it's the spam du jour.

SNK games, mostly KOF, comes mind while reading this. That community will forever be in disarray at this point. Smash community has a long way to go until it reaches the days of "Emill's rant about the quality of ggpo online play" level of toxicity. Just do what yall do now and hopefully both games will get equal support. Just pray that there's never a third game when trying to make the scene bigger.

It's been around for a pretty long time. I remember seeing it in SingSing (Dota guy)'s stream months ago so I assume that's a place where it started.

With the direction the series has been progressing, I don't expect that to happen. I have a hard time imagining most of the Smash 4 scene not making the migration to Smash 5 unless the changes made are so drastic that it's essentially not a Smash Bros game anymore. Like making it a traditional fighting game instead of an opponent-based action game.

At that point just bring back Joy Mech Fight. But seriously they should do that anyway.

Had to google this name just to confirm it was who I thought it was.

The same guy just would not stop hyping up irrelevant foreign Marvel 3 players for the longest time, too, lol.
