I think, for anyone that's on GAF, the opinions of fellow GAFers are probably a better metric for whether or not a game is going to be to their liking.

I'd say that goes even more so for games with nuance or complexity as reviewers don't know what that is.

I have yet to be let down by GAF recommendations and impressions on the few games where I used it to determine my purchase.

Aye I generally use GAF for my reference point on if I will buy a game or not. The OTs help a lot too since a lot of people are there discussing it and are willing to answer questions.

I'm always amazed how polarising this game is. The unwarranted hate it gets is sad, but the diehard defenders are pretty crazy too. I'm just waiting to see how it plays out now.

You just admit that it's gray to the point of lightning and fire having color, elevates them to good artistic expression in your mind... That's not a good thing to be honest. Sure it's well made, but it's still the same gray, brown and gloomy blob that has been done a dozen of times. It is "lazy" and unimaginative to use the same shape that everyone else is using, even if the result is more smooth.
Your post wasn't directed at me but I'll respond anyway.

The control of light, saturation and hue is an aesthetic technique used in films and games for decades to complement the story. Sometimes bright and vibrant works, sometimes dark and desaturated does. Bright and vibrant, dark and dreary, and anything in between has been done dozens of times, so by your definition, it's all lazy.

Why look at Metacritic then?

Because if I'm interested in a game it's far easier to go to Metacritic and read the reviews I want from that page than going to 4 or 5 individual websites, doing the same search in each, and after pages of ads and a bunch of other crap finally getting to the review.

Also, sometimes sites I don't normally read will have an interesting excerpt that makes me read a review I normally wouldn't.

Metacritic is just a tool. It's a very useful website if you use it properly.

Dem employee benefits.

;)

have you played it? if so could you post your thoughts maybe in the spoiler thread.

All I can really say without spoiling much is the story is phenomenal (so far) Its my favorite intro to a video game in quite some time and I put it up there with Mass Effect 2 and TLOU. The characters were very well thought out and very well acted.
Playing on hard the enemies will try to flank you and use cover reasonably well. The first _________ encounter is pretty fucking intense and the lighting in that fight is just .... yea. So far having a blast.
honestly I suggest avoiding pictures (even direct feed) and videos as they do this games visuals and IQ a disservice.

We have no mom and pop game shops where I live. Only big chains that strictly adhere to release dates :(

Hmm...there's a place near where my parents live. I should maybe give them another call and see if they don't mind doing some shady biz on my behalf.

Wouldn't really matter though. By the time it gets out here it will be within a couple of days of release, and I can get the game for $35 out here.

The black borders dont bother me to be honest. I believe it is something you'll notice in the first few mins playing but once you adapt, it'll be like they are not even there

the video games store on my town already has the game for sale, i went there to buy some cheap ps3 games for my brother and a few people were walking out with the game already, if i didn't had a bestbuy $40 certificate, the 20% discount for having GCU and a 3X points on my next purchase i totally would've pick this up

Called a store called Super Smash Games on Tacoma, Wa. The guy on the phone was like I heard the game is 90 percent cutscenes why would you want it.

Looks like they just lost a customer.

Score the game once you complete it!

Definitely will.

Do you just like it personally, or do you foresee it getting a very good reception critically?

Both the only complaint I could say that I have is that I would have liked to have more people to shoot in chapter 1.

Going to pull an all-nighter to complete it?

Probably going to take the next two days with it don't want to rush. Might play Evolve between breaks and I have to work tomorrow at GS from 2- 9.

Can you at least give us a bit of background of what type of games you've enjoyed before so we can better see where you're coming from?

Favorite games are (in no particular order) TLOU, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy Tactics, Smite, Gears of War, Valiant Hearts and Mass Effect (All of them).

Can you pm me where? I have two days off. Desperately trying to get it.

If anyone finds it in the Seattle area let me know.

Definitely will.

I hope you know, that everyone in this thread is expecting detailed impressions given that we have to wait 10 more days.

At the very least, I expect them!

If you take a picture of the game outside of any store and show it to a clerk at Gamestop we can break the street date as we can prove someone else did it first. They will have to go through their Manager all he has to do is call his DM and show that it is being sold elsewhere.

I will post some things in the spoilers thread, Ill give you all a spoiler free breakdown when I get further into the game.

Definitely will.

Thanks for the answers.

What would you say the game does best, or I guess how would you best sell it to people who are worried it's boring?

Edit: Probably best to post those in the spoiler thread, yeah.

Maybe a less relaxed moderation is in order?

i don't think it's fair that every thread regarding this game stears into the same old line of discussion. This was an screenshot thread, so at least people should comment on them.

Leaving the "Grayness awaits" joke aside. i do understand that the color is a good fit for the time period the game takes place. But we must admit it has that distinctive look that we have come to associate with Playstation platforms through out generations.

Dude! Dooood!!! Jelly! :(

I just went from "I think I'll buy a PS4" to "nah" after seeing those waist-high sandbags randomly placed through the streets. Do developers even try to explain this sort of shit?

I know this is from a few hours ago, but I can't help but laugh at how ridiculas this post is. Bravo sir...

That's not a fair assessment. Playstation games aren't the only ones with a desaturated look. Gears of War had the same criticism leveled at it. There are plenty of PS exclusives with vibrant color schemes.
