Would it be a good idea for Sony to buy Capcom for over $1.1 billion?

Its important to note that if they buy Capcom they will get Monster Hunter which can singlehandedly get them back into the handheld market.

Yeah.. but is the handheld market really worth that much? Especially with mobile these days taking a huge chunk. And even if Nintendo lost Monster Hunter that doesn't take them out of competition. And I think the market for handhelds has shrunk making it not so possible to really support two entrants.

I just think these days the handheld market is too small to be worth a big purchase just for it.

Though as some one who loves her Vita and despite having conceded it "failed" (though it has plenty enough games for me as is), I'd love to see them get Monster Hunter and maybe have a chance of reviving it (at least enough to get more third party support that is not indie games.. or at least get more of those japanese games ported over here).

...if sony owned them i don't think there'd be any way around it

It's rather amusing that some people think Sony don't have the money to buy Capcom or that Sony will go under in the next decade or so. Sony has a monstrous amount of assets that they can sell off to offset their losses and unless something catastrophic happens, they're not going anywhere any time soon.

I don't think anyone should buy Capcom.
They have their IP's scattered over all 3 Platform holders. If one of them got them all, we would see some of those IP's die for sure, and that won't please the Fans.
Same for Namco Bandai, Square Enix, Atlus, and all the other Publishers.

It's nice to have dreams, but don't get too selfish about that.

Sony should buy Nintendo. Then they could use all the money Nintendo has saved up to get out of their financial troubles.

That price for Capcom and it's properties I think would be a great value.

Sony would just shutter Capcom as a name/company, keep any and all talented employees if they can, and absorb the IPs, which are extensive.

Imagine any of the studios working on what would have been a Capcom IP? Naughty Dog with Resident Evil or Breath of Fire, or Japan Studio working on Megaman, or even Guerrilla working on Dino Crisis?

I think it would be a no-brainer and only strengthen a very strong portfolio.

And yes, they very well could afford it.

Nobody cares about Breath of Fire or Dino Crisis outside a very small audience. Hell, not even Megaman has that much value.

IPs don't just make money when you own them, you actually need to sell stuff based on those known properties. You don't spend 1.1 billion dollars for something that only has a small chance of making you some decent money.

Sorry but those IPs have great potential, just that Capcom is doing nothing worth while with them.

Under new hands a lot of that could be rebooted and revitalized.

Yup, this would be entirely worth it for Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter alone. They'd possible even make back their money by selling sequels to those games, and in turn selling more hardware, in a matter of a few years.

Sony would also likely finally bring Monster Hunter to new-gen, and do the franchises right. capcom has immense wealth of ips, this price is a steal.

To be honest though, the best company to buy Capcom would be Nintendo.

Nintendo has the chops to do a lot of those IPs right, and they could use the infusion of IP more suited to your average gamer.

All of these team/ip matches are... I'm going to go throw up

Yup, I call bullshit on that. Imagine if Sony called on Insomniac to do Megaman, or gave Dino Crisis to Ready at Dawn? They could even enlist talented indie studios to rejuvenate old Capcom ips. This isn't even mentioning solid stuff like Devil May Cry, Dragon's Dogma, Dead Rising.

Why the hell would Sony pay 1.1 billion dollars to buy something that they have to put more work in to see any real profit?

Spend the money on something that's actually guaranteed to see good returns.

Monster Hunter on consoles sells poorly and one of the reasons the series is so profitable is that it's cheap to develop. If the series is going anywhere, it's on mobile devices.

A next generation Monster Hunter is not happening.

I used to indulge in that fantasy, but given how they recent manage to (partially) acquire Street Fighter, and maybe Dragon's Dogma (uncertain), and funded Deep Down, I'm completely fine if whatever it is they're doing to get ip exclusivity/favors works and they're just scoping them up left and right.

Come on DMC5! Marvel vs Capcom vs All stars! Dragon's Dogma 2!

Resident Evil is the big one though, don't know if they could afford it.

Monster Hunter! I completely forgot about that one

Also I searched for "Sony buy capcom" so that explains why i didn't see the old thread

I'm thinking Sony wouldn't buy them outright but just own a significant portion of it to seal a good deal on several titles.

Either way, if they are worth 1.1 billion (!) I guess even a bad year like 2014 shouldn't phase them too much.

There is no such thing as a guaranteed anything in business. Plus, if you want to make money you would need to spend it, and a lot of those franchises would pay off over time.

Keep in mind, a lot of developers get tried of doing the same IP year after year, and I would bet you could easily find whole teams that would love to do their take on some title from Capcom.

Hell, you could even just license out the properties to other devs. Don't forget that Sony has a pictures division that I'm sure wouldn't mind trying to cash in on a few of those IPs.

First; Sony need to find 1.1 billion dollars....

That parts easy. Most (if not really all) acquisitions are done via debt not cash on hand.

Sony is riding high with excellent sales of PS4 right now. This would be the time to do something like this planning for 3 or 4 years down the line when things may or may not be so rosy.

If Capcom are worth 1.1 billion wouldn't Sony only need to buy a majority stake to get full control of the company, ie 51%?

That would be a hostile takeover, and is extremely difficult to do. Also a lot of companies have poison pill policies and the like to prevent such an occurrence or to sour the company in the event that it happens (preventative measures).

No, there's redundancy in IP's.

Sony has TLOU in place of Resident Evil.

God of War in place of DMC.

Sony would be better cherry picking IP's like Monster Hunter and Street Fighter than buying out Capcom, although it would be nice to see them grab Dino Crisis and Breath of Fire for all things holy.

Sony already owns at least 4 IPs that sell better than any Capcom IP (GT, UC, TLOU, GoW) on a single system, & if you divide RE across 3 platforms, Sony has 2 additional IPs that sell better (LBP, KZ), buying Capcom would be a waste of money.

The only company worth buying would be Take Two interactive, buy it & gut all the poorly performing studios, keep Rockstar & 2K Sports, but its very expensive.

if capcom were to go under, i'd rather their i.p's be split up between the current 3 hardware companies.

i think sony could do some great things with:
-Resident Evil,
-Onimusha,
-Street fighter (it's already there)
-sengokou basara
-darkstalkers
-powerstone (i feel this franchise suits nintendo's audience better, but they already have SSB)

to nintendo:
-Megaman
-ghosts & goblins,
-zack & wick
-monster hunter (it's already there)
-Ace attorney (it's already there)
-BoF (just to see what a team like Intelligent systems, monolithsoft, & alphadream could do with it).

for mircosoft:
-dino crisis,
-clock tower,
-final fight,
-rival schools,
-lost planet

think that's fairly even & plays to what the general audience is, on each platform.

Damn GAF is too fast for me :)

I mean what point is there to buying Capcom other that locking Capcom games from XBone gamers?

NONE.

All Capcom games are on PS4 anyway.

Eh everyone wants the thing they like to do well. You see it with draft picks for sports, console exclusives and when the McRib comes back on the menu at McSlagolds. I like exclusive characters and such so long as everyone gets one, that's a cool incentive for console owners and I totally get first party studios being important but I want every platform that can play these games able to play them, PC, Xbox, Ps4 (and hopefully Nintendo's next effort) But even then there will be the pixel counters under the guise of "I just want the superior version of the game" which would be the version on a well built PC at this point. I say this as a PS4 and PC owner... a lot of folks want to bet on the winning horse, I just am enjoying the race.

There are so many better ways Sony could spend $1 billion dollars.

They could:

- Open 5 new game studios
- Invest in the Playstation 5 hardware
- Invest in Project Morpheus
- Secure third party exclusives
- Throw a pizza party

And still have tons of money left over.

Shit, last time I heard, pizza parties were considered bad luck in the industry lol
