PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

I worked out strategies and finally beat the Hamster port of the original arcade Kunio game on PS2.

I know nobody cares but it felt great.

I have a fatty PS2. Didn't even know you could use a HDD, how do I go about doing that?
I'm seriously completely new to this stuff.
I unfortunately don't feel confident enough in my knowledge of PS2 homebrew to give you a proper tutorial, but the basic process is using HDLoader (a disc you can buy online) or FreeMCBoot to execute a PS2 .iso from the HDD. You can get the .isos to the HDD using your PC (if compatible) or by burning them direct.
Installing FMCB is a bit of a hassle if you don't have a way to run homebrew already, but there are plenty of people who can get you a memory card with FMCB preinstalled.

I strongly recommend you do a good amount of research in to this so you can troubleshoot problems and familiarize yourself with the processes at work. Best of luck.

Does anyone here do FMCB installations? I don't have any of the necessary tools but want to get access to OPL and ESR.

I think drtomoe has said he does, though I don't know from personal experience.

I do! :)

Just PM me and I can get you set up. I just charge for shipping so it's usually $3-4 if you're in the US.

I'll have to take you up on this at some point. If you plan to ship one out in the near future let me know. I'll take one too so you don't have to make multiple trips to the post.

I don't understand any of this stuff. I guess I'll just ignore it for now and one day when I have a good PC I'll play them through an emulator.

more than one hour played and I started to tune my garage up

already won all the races in the first 2 levels, despite I usually play racing games with AT, actually I'm trying to use MT, and I have to say it gives you much more satisfaction after you start to handle it

the only thing I complain is the lack of any data when you tune up some car component, except the engine there is always just a small description at the bottom screen but I feel showing some numbers would be better

I was racing in Shinjuku B with rain and when you exit from the tunnel you really feel the difference from normal to wet
Not a Simulator but definitively not a 100% arcade racing game

no :)

it's Automodellista from Capcom, you can find other pictures in some previous pages, I like that car so if possible I always choose that one :D

I just ordered a ps2. I had one late in the generation, played it's late AAA games, then sold it to put it toward 360.

I know I want to replay-

freedom fighters
Path of neo
vice city
The warriors

And for the first time-
Psi ops
god hand
socom 2

Any other recommendations?

What genres do you tend to prefer?

Action/adventure
Beat 'em ups
tactical games
shooters

For action/adventure I would highly reccomend Shadow of the Colossus. While it may not entirely be action/adventure, it has platforming elements and is one of my all time favorites and one of the best games I have ever played.

Also if you like shooters try Black. A seriously underrated game.

Since people are bringing up Free McBoot, I want to remind everyone that I'm willing to send GAF members memory cards with FMCB preinstalled for the cost of shipping (usually $2-3). I've come across a lot of cheap memory cards that I've picked up over the years and it only takes a few minutes to install, so I'm happy to help.

I'll buy one!

Here's my list of games I'm going to hint down (not all at once)

Kill.switch
God hand
Freedom fighters
Psi ops
MGS3
The warriors
Time splitters
Spartan total warrior
Socom 2
Max Payne 2
Ratchet and clank
kingdom hearts
Zone of the enders
Syphon filter
Mission impossible
Earth defense force
Black
Maximo
Mercenaries
Star wars battlefront
Bully
Lotr
Spiderman 2
Prince of persia
Winback
the thing
Destroy all humans
Rainbow six

This is kind of a demo of what I'm into. Any recommendations?

Good list so far!

Mark of Kri
Red Faction
Maybe MGS2:Substance instead of Winback. Idk, I played Winback back around launch time maybe it has aged well...
Rez
Mercenaries (edit, already on the list lol)

Probably more if I think about it

Gungrave or Gungrave Overdose seems up your alley. Very arcadey third person shooter with cel shading. The second game is better than the first.

Found this on ebay:

Kind of want to buy it because it's quite difficult to find the original (PAL) Ico release with the paper slip and art cards.

Only reason I hesitate is the sticker residue on the top corner (there's some on the back as well).

Why do retailers do this stuff? Bought GoW2 off ebay recently and had an EB Games preowned sticker on the paper sleeve rather than on the outside plastic. Absolutely disgusting.

Pretty rare copy of ICO since its the AUS version. I didn't realise they existed until after I bought mine from UK

Goo Gone will work, just don't soak it or anything. Same thing happened to me with Rule of Rose back when it was cheap. Game Stop sticker on the art insert. Managed to get it off with Goo Gone. Took a little damage to the insert, but that's okay...still sold for $100. Getting just residue off is easy though.

Speaking of Rule of Rose, what the hell happened to make it jump so much in price? I bought it at Gamestop in 2010-2011 for $20. Last year when I checked it was going for $120 or so, but now they are ranging from $180 to $240.

Obviously make sure the insert is removed if the case is open and Goo Gone will make it like new. I've used it quite often. Apply, let it sit a while then rinse and dry.

It really caught me by surprise too. Like you, I got my personal copy when GS still had it, but the store where I used to work had a copy a while back for $125 and I thought it was kind of overpriced. Fast forward a couple months and the price is pretty crazy.

Quantity and demand. More copies are winding up in the hands of collectors, so less are becoming available. It didn't have a huge print, either. I got mine at launch for $30 or so, finally finished it, then parted with it when I realized I didn't care to ever play it again.

The OST however, that's a keeper.

Is it me or does it seem like PS2 games are starting to jump up in price quite a bit on amazon lately.

Was looking for a copy of Haunting Ground earlier and the cheapest copy is nearly $100, Rule of Rose goes for almost $200 now O_O

Not really, there are exceptions though like you listed which were always expensive since last year.

Dammit, looks like the normal price of Haunting Ground went from the $70s around December to $90s now.

Really? I got mine last year for around 20-30 bucks.

Kuon is another pricey survival horror game, up around 50-60ish now. Wonder how much the Fatal Frame series would be now if it hadn't been reprinted.

Hmm, maybe I should pick that up before it gets to Rule of Rose levels.

The greatest hits version of SH2 is the only version to have the extra maria content that was in the Xbox version right?
As far as I know, that is correct.

It's crazy when you think about how many cases for games like RAD, Kuon, MS Saga, and Blood Will Tell were probably destroyed by Gamestop when they started getting rid of PS2 games. All of those cheapo $5 and under games getting their cases thrown away when they transferred them to the little yellow sleeves...

Thanks, thinking of ordering 2 and 3 on amazon since the HD versions are garbage and the price is going up on them. Is Origins worth checking out?

As a general rule of thumb, I've found that amazon usually isn't the best place to get rare games like Haunting Ground for a reasonable price. eBay tends to be a bit more reasonable. I picked up Haunting Ground for about $55 last year and it's definitely gone up in price recently.

Video games in general have gone up in price substantially. I honestly never thought it would happen but we're actually seeing these games accrue.

Once a game is ~12-15 years old, the people who grew up with the game and system have the cash to invest into the games, and you see the value jump. Most games level out quite a bit, though. And obviously some games jump a hell of a lot more than others (the Jak series is still 5-10$).

Ive had a ps2 hooked up since day 1. Its currently spinning ace combat 3. Thats just idling atm. Its been rotating that, colony wars 2, persona 2 dark cloyud 2 and ff12.

Thing is a beast. They should still make games for it.

Much of my backlog goes back to ps2 (petrified backlog). Just the other day i cracked into jak 2 and does that game suck. Jak 1 was 15 years ago but i remember it being alot better than this.

Well I think the Jak series is an exception because AFAIK the HD port they did for the trilogy on PS3 is pretty decent.

For me personally, I'm buying titles that I don't think will ever receive an HD port on current consoles or ever be available for digital distribution outside of ISO downloads for emulators. With REMake being the exception I just don't see many PS2 era titles getting ports for this gen with the market leaning towards doing remasters of last gen games. It doesn't really help that Sony hasn't said shit about any plans for PS2 titles on PS4, one reason the market stabilized for some old PS1 titles was because of PSN classic downloads for games like Xenogears and FF Tactics which went for $100+ before they were on PSN.

With that being said I'm buying what I can before prices go crazy on some titles. For example.

Viewtiful Joe
Valkyrie Profile 2
DQ 8
Gradius V
Shadow Hearts Series
Wild Arms (which some of the ps2 games are going for insane prices already)
Grandia 3
Silent Hill (I also think the prices for 2&3 are going to be crazy later on for this once Silent Hills comes out and also because the HD port is awful)

Where is the best place to get an official PS2 controller at a reasonable price? I pulled my PS2 out of storage and found everything but my controller.

Guys, is it worth it to drop $150 on a new slim ps2?

new slim you mean the last model (90000) ?

if so, consider I bought it last month, used in good condition, not so many scratches, boxed, for $115
you can see the picture of it a few pages back

but you have to consider that I live in Japan, maybe in the US (I suppose you live there) demand/offer is different, here the new slim is priced almost double than any other previous model

Yea, prices are starting to increase but it's still an excellent time to pick up PS2 games. It was best approximately 2 years ago though, IMO. I'm seeing a little less deals at my local Pawn Shops and Flea Markets but there are still plenty, for now.
