PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

You're pal?

Wish I had Pal PS2 just for this lol, two shadow hearts for 44 USD.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shadow-Hear...843?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c97d0d9a3

Shadow Hearts 3 (From the New World) has always been cheap AU$10 or so as they printed way more than they sold and it was around for many years brand new. The first game and Covenant both go for around the AU$50-$60 mark. Considering that listing is for 2 + 3 and shipping it's a pretty good price. They look like UK PAL copies.

Yeah he replied to the photo saying that he mass listed items and he probably put the wrong image up.

Offered me a partial refund. I guess that'll do because I can't be bothered going through the trouble of sending it back to him.

As far as I can tell there's no actual difference in PS2 manuals between Australian and European games, so now that I have an AU copy of the game itself I can find any old manual. Wonder if an eBay seller will part with their manual for $10 or so? :\

Worse case scenario I'll buy a full UK copy and resell it incomplete without the manual. Shouldn't lose too much money there I'd think.

And he's sent two more messages explaining himself while I typed this out, poor guy is probably worried sick.

It was just so sudden. There were games on Amazon going for like $20-30 for years that now jumped right up to $80-100. I'm just trying to understand what spurred on this sudden uptick in demand leading to higher prices.

It's difficult to understand exactly why, but it could be folks pining for the old days when pubs wouldn't release busted games at retail as often, or just speculation ("oh no, if I don't buy it now, who know how much it'll cost in the future!").

Popularity of Twitch and speedrun videos have dramatically increased the value of games like Super Metroid, but I don't know how that would affect PS2.

Collectors/enthusiasts come in waves. As more people get into collecting certain games (demand increases), the supply of those games decreases and prices tend to increase as a result That tends to push a large segment of people out of that specific market because they can't afford those prices or just wont pay those prices and they start buying cheaper games (generally newer gen games). Then the cycle repeats.

6th Gen games were safe for a long time because they were "last gen" games up until like a year ago. Now they're a couple of generations old and the cheaper option to buying PS1/Saturn/N64 games. Interest is starting to grow which means demand will probably start growing.

I think this is absolutely true. I also believe general brand strength couples with nostalgia in these waves. The PS brand is gaining strength and favorability after being somewhat "down" (at least in NA) last gen. People are remembering why they liked PS again. Sony played on this with its marketing leading up to the PS4 launch. I think the Wii's popularity led to more interest in the classic Nintendo platforms a few years ago, too.

So I have to ask, which games are we seeing spike?

A lot of the games that were $5-10 for the longest time. Robot Alchemic Drive, MS Saga, Blood Will Tell, Metal Slug Anthology, Bloody Roar 4, and King of Fighters Orochi Saga are good examples.

Then you've got games like Yakuza 2 and Drakengard 2 that started getting more valuable because of sequels. Yakuza 2 has exploded over the past month or two -- it's creeping up to $70!

Fuck me, now a complete AU copy of Ico pops up on ebay. Better condition than the one I bought to boot.

Guess I'll buy it and try and unload my missing manual one.

Man, maybe its time to unload a disc only copy that I got from Gamestop last year during their 75% off sale.

Well, if any of you happened to pick up Chulip during those 75% off sales, it looks like it's made the jump too. Cheapest on Amazon is $54 and disc only on eBay is $35. This was a $2-5 game for YEARS! I bought a brand new copy from eStarland less than a year ago for $20.

i'm not so knowledged on action replay discs apart from the ones i used to get in play magazine years ago centered around a couple games

but anyways is it possible to get one that will let me use the cheat codes and give me region free on the ps2? and also about the cheatcodes is it also possible to store every game possible on a memory card or usb stick?

So what the hell is going on lately with ps2 game prices on Amazon and eBay? Everything has seemed to spike way up suddenly.

Ps2 is about 15 years old now. All the teen gamers from that time period are now pushing 30, employed( well, in this market who knows), and wanting to relive those memories. The good thing is, ps2 software is plentiful and still at a point where people generally are dumping the games off at goodwill or selling them at yard sales for a buck. Now's the time to buy....

Question: are there any tips for avoiding input lag on BCPS3's?

I have a Panasonic Plasma for reference. Do componemt cables at 480i make a difference?

I just found my PS2 and all my equipment. I bought component cables for it because it was just too blurry on my 40 inch HDTV, and it looks really good. So good that I ordered some games off eBay (I sold all my ps2 games a couple of years ago to gamestop)

I think I read from users here on GAF that the slight input lag is due to the PS3 and the HDMI output? I'm sure someone here can enlighten you but if not totally wrong (it's possible) then I think, by simple logic, switching from HDMI to component may reduce it a bit? I think even modern LCD/Plasma/LED televisions have lag, right?

Nah, there's no avoiding it.

Frankly, I don't think it's worth bothering with a PS3 for PS2 games at this point. Just get the real deal.

I would just recommend that too; get the a real PS2 and play it legitimately.

I'm sure it's still fairly easy to find a pretty affordable PS2 slim and enjoy your games just like they were in the early 2000s. And the PS2 slims are built very well, so you'll know they'll last a good length of time.

Just bought PAL copies of all three Shadow Hearts for $100 on eBay. They look basically mint condition.

Is From the New World worth playing? If not, that's $15-20 to resell it, which means I'm basically getting the first and Covenant for $40 a piece. Amazing price considering they go for $60+ separately (and in worse condition to boot).

Now lets hope they don't arrive and end up having scratched up disks or something.

I'm spending way too much money on PS2 games considering my backlog. Won't get around to Shadow Hearts for months if not years lol

Does anyone have any experience with wireless knock-off PS2 controllers from eBay? I currently have a Katana wireless PS2 controller (was branded in official yellow Sony packaging and sold at major stores in 2009ish), but it feels somewhat stiff and sluggish. I'd like to get a replacement and/or backup, but can't go back to a wired controller.

The katana ones were just pretty shitty. The analogs are terrible and the buttons stiff.

I hear good things about the logitech cordless action controllers. I want to try the Surfwave wireless controller from Sega but they're hecka scarce.

I had one of the Logitech controllers. It was actually quite good. I liked the d-pad on it a lot -- it felt looser, but was extremely accurate.

Same here - I still have mine and used it exclusively after buying it. Tracked it down specifically thanks to the reviews at the time.

The D-pad was a huge improvement for fighting games.

I think those Logitech wireless controllers are highly recommended here on GAF. I've used one at my cousins house when we would play on the PS2 and they are comfy. We would play FIFA with them and I never noticed any drop in signal and the d-pad for fighting games did feel more comfortable. I'm not a fan of the form but after a few minutes I totally forgot about it and they felt nicer due to the slightly larger and more ergonomic shape.

Showing my love for my favorite console. Current collection, always adding when I run into a game I really want.

Awesome collection! Man some of those games I'd like to have in mine.

I'll bet anything someone here will tell you something about your preferred organization method for the games, haha.

Mine are alphabetized. You can imagine it's hell when I add a new one, since the bookshelf is pretty tightly packed.

found my old launch ps2 at my parents house but it wont read any discs :(

everytime i try to launch a game it comes up with the disc read error screen, and there are no scratches on the disc

i cracked open my ps2 and cleaned the lens using rubbing alcohol but it didnt help

So are there any sites other than eBay and Amazon that are good for buying PS2 games these days? I unfortunately live in an area completely devoid of any retro gaming shops, so online is my only option. I'm asking because the skyrocketing prices on Amazon as of late are putting me off from picking up some games that I've been meaning to for a while.

I use to use goozex but it became total shit and now is gone.

You could try Glyde. I used them for some stuff and they have a decent PS2 section.

I once bought a Wii for my grand daughter and she hardly played with it.

So at 8, I got her a PS2 and limited access to my 300+ collection.
That was the ticket. She's currently playing Kingdom Heart.

Long live the King.

There's a dial u can turn a little that might improve chances of it operating properly. Look up DRE fix on google.

I'm glad to hear she is getting the chance to play some classics

Yeah, I've opened mine up and fixed it a few times over the years. Its super simple and requires very little technical know-how. If you feel like moving over to a HDD, free mcboot and OPL work great too.

Seriously though, use this guide. Shouldn't take more than 30 mins.

I hadn't heard of these prior to your post. I'm also curious if they play PSX games without region lock.

Any other potential downsides that folks are aware of?

THIS indicates it'll play PSX region free as well as backups.

**seems that the systems capabilities and ease of use vary from model to model. Gonna have to research.

Furthering my research dump, I found this post on a forum that (I assume) GAF mods wouldn't want me linking to:

The post is in response to people discussing FMCB, for context.

Good stuff, thanks. Seems it does play games from both gens and all regions. I'd love to have one.

It's been a while, but I did try PS1 games via component instead of HDMI and it did improve the lag. I didn't compare it to the real deal PS2 at that time, but I would assume even the PS3 with component wouldn't be quite as good as the real deal. But it is much better. The problem with using your PS3 via component is that some PS3 games look distorted with interlaced output. They look stretched and just ... weird.

It's a real shame. Even the BCPS3 isn't a perfect solution.
