MGS5 - "Snake won't really speak much at all. More of a silent protagonist."

I think people are overreacting a bit here. Ground Zeroes was great in regards to Snake's Voice acting and how often he spoke. Not sure why it would be any different in TTP.

One thing that is worth noting is the gameplay is taking center stage it would seem which I really appreciate. I had fun playing Ground Zeroes and was pleasantly surprised at how great the gameplay was since the series has always been cinematically focused. My guess is Kojima is just highlighting that you may go long stretches between cutscenes beacuse of the open world nature of the game and he probably won't speak much during game play.

I feel that this will be the best MGS to date.

Dumb. Whose stupid idea was it to turn a well-established character into a semi-silent protagonist?

Hell if you're gonna pay someone to NOT talk then save the money and bring back Hayter.

Open world sucks.

You think GZ was great in that regard. Lots of people here noticed how little BB spoke, even in such a short game.

I think the people who are still hung up about it having anything to do with Kiefer aren't seeing the big picture. Kojima ACTUALLY seems to think that this direction for the character is an inspired and artistic choice, when in fact nearly every modern Western AAA game has some generic no face character who barely speaks because he's the "player avatar". I feel like Kojima's decision to be heavily influenced in Western design choices for Phantom Pain will make it lose the charm the Metal Gear series is known for.
Uhhhh what western triple A games have you been playing lately, because that's an unbelievably outdated notion.

Will this include cutscenes? Will Snake just be awkwardly standing around while people are talking back and forth? Is this simply through the removal of Codec conversations?

Dat Kiefer paycheck.

Anyway I'm perfectly ok with this if they can carry the story with other characters (of course there are many other ways to build character than dialogue).

Yea I would like confirmation on this. It's fine if he doesn't talk during gameplay. But if it's like the first three minutes of this video then it'll be awkward as hell.

I'm all for Snake talking more...but at the same time, no way do I wanna go through 10 hour of cutscenes like MGS4.

Hopefully they can get this right.

Its an outdated notion that's still being dragged out passed its death. Watch Dogs, Far Cry 4 and Dying Light all have bland, features protagonists who barely say anything besides your usual generic modern video protagonist quip.

I'm rather concerned about this. I trust in Kojima, but I hope he doesn't make BB an empty vessel. I want to hear his perspective on things, and have interesting interactions with the other characters. I want him to show emotion. Either way, I'm still hyped!

.

The funny thing is, he barely said anything even in those 10 hour cutscenes. Kojima has been trying to turn the Snakes into silent protagonists since MGS4.

This is disappointing to me. I want a great story that's fully featured not something that's half bakes because they had to pay a Hollywood actor and all big boss does is grunt and agree/disagree with kaz.

Yea but then on the other hand you have a shit ton of protagonists that do have distinct personalities both in and out of gameplay.
-AC protagonists
-Infamous SS/First Light
-Order 1886
-Sunset Overdrive protagonist
-GTAV protagonists(story mode)
Aiden Pearce most definitely wasn't a vessel for the player either, he had a ton of annoying inner monologues during gameplay.

Good news from my perspective. I know several people who are psyched about Kiefer being the voice but I can't stop hearing Jack Bauer during TFP. It didn't have to be Hayter but I really wish they had gone with someone who I didn't already associate to that kind of role so heavily from another series.

He's a good actor, and it's more my fault that I have him typecast in my head I suppose, but it really drove me nuts. Was actually considering playing MGSV in Japanese with English subtitles because of it (assuming that's an option), still may.

I guess all those trailers that had almost completely no dialogue weren't just for show.

Disappointing. This was billed up as Big Boss' full turn to darkness and only now are you starting to do the completely opposite thing and remove the self-agency that made him so profound in MGS3? Fucking hell, his dialogue and personality in MGS3 was what made him almost more likable than Solid Snake at one point. I'm all for making the player feel more like a part of a story but Metal Gear has committed to it's own vision for ages now and at this point people are all in almost solely on account of the character.

Reeks of the Sutherland deal backfiring immensely. This is going to end up making half of Snake's dialogue even more out of place than they were in Ground Zeroes, what with the jarring disconnect of having him talk to a bunch of established cast members who retained their roles.

I don't think there's a single person here who can't understand why this change was made, but there's going to be a ton of people who will refuse to.

....he said like two lines.

My point is that I didn't notice how silent he was because I was enjoying the gameplay side of everything. He talked as much as I would have expected him to and I am glad he wasn't just mumbling the whole time in the open world like in GTAV where they never shut up.

The Order just got roasted for being too cinematic with no gameplay and too much talking/cutscenes, now MGS is leaning towards more gameplay/less talking and people are getting angry.

I just think people are going to bitch no matter what.

After he was downright silent to the point of absurdity in GZ with Miller's nonstop talking, it was obvious this was the route they were going.
The scene on the helicopter where Miller's freaking out was probably the most absurd as you have snake just sitting there saying and doing nothing, it makes the whole thing feel really awkward.

Kiefer will have plenty of lines, the choice will pay off in dividends and it's a lot better than simply having Snake simply repeat lines questioningly like he used to.

So no more codec calls either? Not like they were really used much in IV, but man I loved them in the first 3 games.

If Snake in TPP maintains his same silence/dialogue ratio as in GZ, I'll be OK with that. I played through GZ so many times and I don't recall ever thinking "Dammit Snake, you aren't talking enough!"

Can't wait for him to meet his buddy, voiced by Patrick Stewart, who is immediately killed.

Ugh, this is exactly what I fear when devs go for celebrity voice talent. Good VA is a must, celebrity actors are a no. See also Destiny where it's not really quiet but is instead terrible.

Yeah. Kind of not happy about this. Makes little sense to the reasoning behind leaving Hayter in the dust.

I definitely felt it was lacking dialogue in Ground Zeroes /Shrug

#notMyDad'sMetalGear

Initially that would seem like a real shame, and in GZ it was a little weird, but I guess we'll see how it is in PP. :-/
