Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

A quick question. I haven't really followed the game/beta since the backer beta first came out, but the run up to release has made me want to start the beta up again...
How is the state of the beta? Pretty much the full game? Will the save game be compatible after release?

The content of the beta hasn't changed but the presentation has. It runs better, it looks better, it doesn't constantly crash. The first BB and the latest version feel different, even if they are pretty much the same thing.

Here are a bunch of portraits I collected this morning. They are mostly women, as that was what I was specifically looking for, but also some guys too. Style-wise, they are all over the place, but there are quite a few that I think fit the POE style.

Where were all of these portraits during NWN's hayday? Man...

Don't cross the streams.
It's Sera from Dragon Age: Inquisition. Adding her to the game would in all likelyhood cause an explosion or something.

Haha yeah, I also have fanart of Anders and Cullen in that album. I can't stand Sera personally, but I grabbed it because I have so few elves in the collection... And it doesn't really look like her all that much.

Waiting for the review key has never been this nerve-wracking :)
I hear they're going out tomorrow, which means it'll be near-impossible to write thorough reviews in time for release, so we'll probably just do day-one impressions with a review to come later.

I won't trust any review where the writer hasn't gone without sleep for five days in order to play as much of it as possible. :p

RPGCodex just posted a report on PAX East, with an extremely juicy interview with the Obsidian guys :-).

READ IT HERE.

Ps: It also has other interviews with other RPG developers:

There was the traditional high fantasy Pillars of Eternity, the low fantasy strategy-RPG Legends of Eisenwald, the non-Japanese jRPG Telepath Tactics, the adventure-RPG Quest for Infamy, the promise of a return to the Stygian Abyss with Underworld Ascendant, and even a CYOA cat sim RPG.

I would have hoped the "Not serious" smiley at the end of that would have shown that I was in fact, not serious.
I am very bad with sincerity in text, sorry
also its really hard to tell whether people are joking or not about games journalism ever since güber ghate

Josh: So somebody asked on the Codex forum for you to ask me about why Might would affect things like crossbows and things like that or why everyone can engage and it’s actually for consistency and to help with the player’s learning curve because I think that can trip up people a lot in D&D is that there’s a lot of hidden like… that affects a lot of this stuff but not that. Like a subset of characters can do this stuff but not all characters can. I think that, especially when a player is building a character for the first time they don’t know any of that stuff. That's all very hard to communicate quickly and I think the negatives of finding out “Oh, by the way Might affects crossbow damage” I think those negatives are far less than finding out “Oh, I built a high Might character but it doesn’t affect bow damage”. This is something that happens in D&D where if you built your character wrong, you can’t go back and fix it. So screw you. It's not realistic and I admit it’s not realistic but it’s done so that a person can build their character and feel confident that what they invested in is actually going to pay off in the game. That’s my hope anyway.

Obsidian's AMA from Reddit was just posted.

This answer got me pretty hyped:

Eric Fenstermaker said:
And we went kind of overboard with player backgrounds and development, too. One of the big goals for the narrative was to make sure the player was able to really roleplay the character they envisioned. So we started with 17 backgrounds, but then we added several additional layers of nuance to better define that background. You're a drifter, sure, but are you more of a swindler who gets chased from town to town or are you more of a roving psychopath? You make those choices early on in a conversation with an NPC, and then they show up in a procedurally generated biography. Then you play the game and the bio keeps getting longer with every major choice you make. By the end of the game you've got this entire memoir that you wrote by playing the game - a chronicle of the character you've been defining the whole time. And the odds are that because of all the different possible choices throughout the game, no two biographies will turn out the same.

That sounds so awesome. Defining a character through the intro, as in Alpha Protocol and NWN2, was something that direly needed to be expanded upon... I'm glad Obsidian recognized this, too. And they took it in the most interesting direction, wow.

I can hardly wait to see it in action.

Oh, right. There's a wiki. :x

from what I've read the attribute system, along with the magic system, were one of the main issues for many of the beta players. One problem I can see coming up is that Might is going to be a must-have stat for nearly every character since it's the only way to increase damage (well, unless the spell damage multiplier turns out to be not worth it).

Yeah that attribute in particular really bugs me conceptually. I would typically pour stats into other areas for rp purposes but I can't imagine a build in this game that isn't a dud in combat which doesn't have mid to high teens might unless that build is basically a meat shield.

They have said that they are planning on fiddling a lot after release so who knows maybe it won't stick but Josh seems pretty devoted to it. If it sucks maybe we'll see attribute mods.

Not necessarily. You don't need might if you want to make someone a pure tank. You don't have to take might if you want to make a class that's focused on applying afflictions as effectively as possible. Most people think you always need DPS, but that's not the case. Affliction focused builds are pretty dam funny.

How about a beautiful custom HUD or droppable loot?

Cool stuff. i was unaware that Pillars supported mods.

During that video i heard bells in the background noise. Do they announce the time? And how far away are the bells? My guess is that its from the next map over.

edit:
Yay! My copy of the guide book shipped! Should be here tomorrow or Thursday!!

Can't wait :)
Is the guide coming out before the game? Could you please let us know how the book is? i love high quality guidebooks.

Ah great, that looks nice, love customizing the UI a bit, after so many years of playing mmos I'd really rather have my chat box on left side and probably party on the left side assuming it's possible to make a vertical party box(or just leave it on the bottom doesn't really matter that much).

Since I'll most likely be playing Bloodborne for the first couple of weeks, by the time I start playing this I think there'll be a bunch of nice balancing mods too.
