It's constantly bashing you over the head with it's own pretentiousness up until the very last conversation with tupac which becomes corny after the very first listen.

These days I feel like the word corny gets thrown extremely easily at anything someone doesn't like.

Thats kind of been Kendrick's steez since day 1, though.
Yeah at least he had enough of an understanding to show restraint in the past. On this LP he's literally OD'ing and it shows. There are so many tracks on this album that are skippable or better left as standalone songs. This album suffers from MBTDF effect, except I'd argue unlike that LP TPAB isn't intending to do the same thing most of the time.

I didn't think he'd top S80.. then I thought he wouldn't top GKMC.

Arguably he did and didn't, but this is another step forward. Tons of growth.

Edit: I think we've got the point that you don't like the album Eloquent lol
Who said I didn't like it? Esch? Don't mistake words said in jest for blind hate.

I'm sorry I should've said stale.

Am I crazy, but is "I" way, way better on the album? I haven't listened to the old version, but I swear it sounds different. It sounds live. Digging it way more.

It is. Its produced as though kendrick is singing it to a live crowd which makes the entire song so much better.

It's a recreation of this version. Way better than the studio single version. The original felt too perfect, and too clean, of an interpolation of the sample. Whereas the album and SNL version sound dirty and hit their mark perfectly.

Yeah, I remember this version. This album, man. Phenomenal. Like, I actually went to Rap Genius for some of the singles. I never go to Rap Genius for ANYTHING because most of the time it's just not worth it. This time, it was really cool.

My favorite of his three albums, and it only took one play for me to decide that. That said, he has a genuine talent, which is his ability to critique himself just as well as he critiques others; as a result, he will continue to mature intellectually and evolve sonically.

A personal aside: really bummed that the untitled song wasn't released with the album.

After letting it settle in, I'm really feeling this album. The first six or so tracks are rough around the edges but still pretty good (except For Free, like Real I just don't like it at all), and once you get to Alright the album hits a another level and you start getting some of the best flows, production, and lyrics Kendrick's ever had. The album version of i is a lot better too, takes it from meh to listenable.

I think GKMC was more consistent in quality from song to song, but I really like what he did here and I'd probably say TPAB is a more interesting project.

He still isn't as good as Childish Gambino but he's getting there

The album's getting amazing reviews by the way. Getting positive scores by every critic. Currently at 94 on metacritic with 8 reviews counted.
94 god damn. Just downloaded it (thanks Samsung for the free deezer premium), bout to listen.

Peaked? Bruh...this is his sophomore album! He's got more to go as long as label shit doesn't happen.

Really good album. This and T&Y are some of the best works in Hip hop in recent memory next to RTJ2 and Rapsody's debut.

As much as I love Gambino's music.........nah.

Listened to it a few times, and wow... it's crazy. For Free is amazing. Gonna take several spins to let it all sink in. I really do enjoy the turned up common denominator type of music being put out too, nothing against that, but I agree that it's refreshing to see this kind of ambition, faults and all, from a mainstream hip-hop artist. Kendrick has A LOT to say, but it's important stuff.

One thing that strikes me as particularly interesting are all the religious tones on Kendrick's albums, especially this one. I'm not religious anymore, but a lot of the angles he takes here definitely remind me of the things I used to hear when I went to church. Not in a bad way of course, but I feel like there are some lingering elements that still have an impact on me.

Like when he said how much a dollar cost, the price of a spot in heaven, enjoy your loss... goddamn...

the wu tang clan would be a good example.
I've never liked that argument because their solo albums were essentially group albums. And some of the fist phase of solo albums are better than 36 Chambers. Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords.

Wu Tang Forever isn't better than 36 Chambers but it's the best rap double album ever. Come at me, Pac and Bone Thug stans.

This shit is 79 minutes long? What's he the Tool of rap now? Going into this one with no expectations. Gkmc didn't hold up all that well for me to be honest though. Loved it in the beginning then it got kind of boring. S.80 is his best imo. We'll see if this is better.
