Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly |OT| It's The American Dream

Just got this the other day and gave it a few listens... goddamn, haven't really followed Kendrick until lately. This is really something special, it feels like it's been so long since an album like this has been at the forefront of hip hop. It feels like he's really baring his damn soul and all his flaws and insecurities, right along with the bravado and confidence. It's not about dropping names and putting on a persona that is separate from the real person behind the mic.

Reminds me a lot of Aquemini, for some reason. The cool, quiet beats and the thoughtful lyrics woven in with spoken word shit. Definitely an instant classic, much much needed.

I still think Kendrick killed someone. Blacker The Berry is just one in a long list of songs where he continually references being a murderer. He'd never outright admit it, but that's the impression I get. Especially in light of how emotional he gets when discussing Blacker The Berry, and how serious he is about religion/the baptism referenced in Sing About Me I'm Dying Of Thirst.

I think he views himself as a murderer, albeit indirectly. He got his friend Dave killed.

He might also be using it more metaphorically.

Cool video. The black and white thing seems to hot now with racially charged videos. The Vince Staples video and Close Your Eyes And Count To Fuck were in B&W too

Must make it difficult for the I don't see colour folks.

someone gif him dramatically turning around in the uncle sam costume please and thanks

For Free is one of the worst parts of the album. Give me a video for These Walls or How Much A Dollar Cost already.

Every time I go back and listen to this whole album I get more and more convinced it's better than GKMC

I need GIFS of Kendrick and Terry Crews hittin the Quan

Hope this bump is okay. Just a heads up that the Grammys are coming on tonight. I'm hoping TPAB takes the album of the year award. I definitely think it has the hip-hop category in the bag though.

The caterpillar is a prisoner to the streets that conceived it
Its only job is to eat or consume everything around it, in order to protect itself from this mad city
While consuming its environment the caterpillar begins to notice ways to survive
One thing it noticed is how much the world shuns him, but praises the butterfly
The butterfly represents the talent, the thoughtfulness, and the beauty within the caterpillar
But having a harsh outlook on life the caterpillar sees the butterfly as weak and figures out a way to pimp it to his own benefits
Already surrounded by this mad city the caterpillar goes to work on the cocoon which institutionalizes him
He can no longer see past his own thoughts He’s trapped
When trapped inside these walls certain ideas take roots, such as going home, and bringing back new concepts to this mad city
The result?
Wings begin to emerge, breaking the cycle of feeling stagnant
Finally free, the butterfly sheds light on situations that the caterpillar never considered, ending the internal struggle
Although the butterfly and caterpillar are completely different, they are one and the same.

I haven't appreciated To Pimp The Butterfly until I read the lyrics and listened to every word. I wasn't making sense of the meaning before then, just the music.

Only once.

50 Cent's Curtis.

Stop it lol.

If he didn't get it this year it's hard to imagine him ever getting it. TPAB was a masterstroke, tbqh. There's nothing like it in the past, and unless he makes it there will never be anything like it in the future.

Man, I feel the same. Which is probably why this loss is especially upsetting. If this goddamn masterpiece of an album couldn't take it I don't see it happening any time in the near future. Shameful stuff.
