So since the saw cleaver shows strength as D and skill as E, I should focus on strength instead? Can I rank up the E in skill if I leve up my skill? Just confused on how this works.
You level up the weapon's scaling by fortifying it. If it has a D in Strength and an E in Skill, you'll get more of a damage increase with that weapon per level of strength. But no matter how much you fortify it strength will always scale better.

Yes. When it comes to scaling, S > A > B > C > D > E > nothing. You'll want to focus on leveling the skill with the best scaling until you reach the point of diminishing returns, which won't happen for a while if you're starting out and probably not until NG+ (guess on my part).

? Ive been picking up the items along the way, but I get to a spot (where there was a madmans knowledge on a plank) where I cant see anyware else to drop, and I keep dying. whats the catch?
A torch definitely helps.

The attribute bonuses improve through weapon upgrades, not by leveling up stats.

But you have the right idea about focusing more on strength upgrades than skill, if you plan to continue with the saw cleaver.

Are you sure that's related to insight and not after defeating the area boss? I'm assuming you're talking about the same spawns from that fight.

I can confirm it, I had 12 insight at some point and they stopped appearing. Now I have over 20 and they appear whenever I go there.

upgraded my cane to +3 and mainly leveling up Skill (alongside Vitality and Endurance)

you guys weren't kidding this thing is putting in work

OH FUCK OFF! I have 5 Insight and the enemies start using brand new moves? I almost died to a trash mob. I can only imagine Father G getting even harder.

I would really like to know the answer to this too.
There appears to be a door that opens up to a series of landings that lead to the bottom.

you need a torch there are some planks but they are very difficult to see

Seems like the invincibility window after getting hit is really short or non-existent. You can easily get combo'd to death by bosses or in a crowd.

How the hell does coop work ? I've read Klepek's guide on Kotaku but it doesn't say why we can't ring the bells sometimes. My friend is level 26, I'm 27. We have the exact same password set in our network settings. We are both at the cathedral. We cannot ring the bels. When we were at the beginning of the game, outside of the clinic, I could ring the small resonant bell, but not the beckoning bell, while my friend could ring both.

Can someone help ? I just want to play coop, damn it.

You need at least 1 insight to ring the beckoning bell. Should be able to ring the small resonant bell anywhere it's allowed which is basically anywhere that's not a boss encounter.

One of you needs to ring the beckoning bell and the other needs to ring the small resonant bell. Whoever rings the resonant bell will go to the world of whoever rang the beckoning bell. Any progress that happens in their world won't happen in yours and vise versa.

Edit: Jesus Christ, that was like 10 pages ago, this thread moves too fast for me. :P

Just finished the game. It was a bit shorter than I expected. Took me 23 hours, but I missed one place,
Cainhurst Castle
, even though I tried to explore every nook and cranny. Found all the other optional bosses though. Still have to try Chalice dungeons too.

Random thoughts:

Really liked the combat. However, I feel like the evade was a bit too fast, especially chaining multiple evades in a row. Combined with very fast healing, I completed all the bosses on my first try apart from
Darkbeast Paarl
and even that was mostly due to being there way too early. Still, boss fights were intense so this doesn't really bother me.

I miss the environmental variety of the previous Souls games. While there were some very pretty places they weren't as distinct as before. Also, you can't really make a perfect game if it doesn't include a lava and an ice level.

This one was completely silly of me... I completed the game without realizing that weapons can be bought from the normal vendor, instead of the one who sells things for insight. Oh well...

Enemy spoiler:
Damn those frenzy inducing brain tentacle things.
:(

Where should I be ringing my bell to help people at level 56? I've apparently done this whole game like 15 levels under the "recommended" level so idk where people this level are actually supposed to be.

the whip version has ridiculous range, and the cane version I think is the weapon that consume the less stamina per attack. Shit's crazy. The only problem is that it's weak at staggering enemies, so you have to be careful not to button mash.

Yup, and you're not even invincible when you get knocked on your ass, so you better get up as soon as you can if you fall over.

Played a bit last night... not too far from the cleric,.... but I have a question. How much easier is the fight if you level up? It just seems you can do much more damage by leveling and modding your weapons. Is this true?

It gets easier, but not overly so. You make I'd reckon 1/3 more damage than you would if you upgrade (my saw cleaver was +2). It is still a matter of patience and knowing when to parry.

I accidentally knocked the
sniper
off the tower in
Old Yaharnam
. Their goodies are now floating out of reach in the abyss. Did I just get screwed out of the goods?

When you select a Chalice Dungeon, what does the "spirit" (?) icon above the word Depth mean? There are 5 over the one I'm looking at so I'm curious.

got this game last night... cant even get past the part with all the guys in the street..

awesome.

Try and get the attention of only 1 or 2 enemies at a time. You'll get quickly overwhelmed otherwise.

Pebbles are good for luring 1 enemy towards you, so you should equip those in one of your quick item slots (bottom row when you hit Options button).

If you get knocked down, be spamming dodge. You can dodge out of the knocked down animation faster than you can move. There's actually a special animation, even, for dodging while knocked down. If you dodge as early as possible, you can't be hit again before dodging.
