Will this be the defining holiday season for Xbox One?

Since this isn't 2007 I don't see Halo 5 giving a big push to the XB1 or even staying relevant for a month. I think Sony could do a price drop with a decent pack in and be fine.

agreed. It will sell if it turns out really good, but its not going sell tons just because it says Halo on the case.

GAF has the attention span of fruit flies. We had this same song and dance last year, and nothing changed. Having a good 2 months out of the year is no excuse for the other 10. I'm shocked no one calls them on this. I expect more spouting of "the comeback is real" and "Will Xbox One finally catch up in Murica?" Threads aplenty. In the grand scheme nothing will change because both sides will balance themselves out. You know it's true.

People do call them on it.

But obviously there are people who don't either.

If Sony drops to $299 (basically following the succesful strategy of PS2 and doing price cuts even with great sales) I can't see MS winning even in US.

Are they really? It only happened last Fall because of an extreme price disparity. Most seem so sure that PS4 won't get a significant price cut, but if it does it really nullifies any Microsoft might try.

Not if MS can make their console cheaper than whatever the PS4 goes down to. Like Mikey said, I'm positive that MS knows that have a good opportunity in North America this year since they have a really good gaming lineup.

Being the only console with the new Call of Duty + Halo 5 and at a price cheaper than the competition will definitely attract people who are looking to dump their Xbox 360s later this year.

There's Gears game this year, whether it's a collection or just one game remastered. Insiders teased it's happening.
Yeah.... But the question is will it be rushed out like MCC just to make a deadline..

I rather a gears collection work 100% then have it for the holidays.

This discussion again. Can we wait until after e3 before we start?

Although the meltdown in the year end holiday sales thread was indeed entertaining.

People have been talking about MS not having major games for the first half of the year since December. A lot of people have "called them out" (though I don't think I would exactly put it that way).

I expect more spouting of "the comeback is real" and "Will Xbox One finally catch up in Murica?" Threads aplenty. In the grand scheme nothing will change because both sides will balance themselves out. You know it's true.

We don't know it's true because we still don't have any idea for what's planned for the first half of 2016 on the Xbox One. I could easily see games like Scalebound and/or Qunatum Break releasing during that period.

This is my issue with the XB1, it's basically a holiday console.

Zelda got delayed?

If Sony drops the price this fall i don't think they have anything to worry about. You shouldn't put so much importance on 2 months anyway. Consoles are sold throughout the year and right now PS4 is gaining market share.

Everything is lining up for MS for sure.

Barring a PS4 price drop of course
, but MS should still have a very successful Christmas.

I'm fine with no Marcus Fenix collection if it means we get Gears 1 remastered.

Leading up to e3 every game will be X1 exclusive until proven otherwise too, just like the last two years

It depends on how aggressive they are with the pricing. Something like a bundle with 2 games for $279 would surely beat out Sony in the npds. How low is MS willing to go?

Does the OP mean catch up in sales?

Zelda this holiday was never going to influence One sales I think. Zelda will be quality and sell well, but I doubt it is going to move that much more U's at this point.

Uncharted 4 delay, lack of Tomb Raider on ps4 and Halo 5 could definitely give the One an advantage over the ps4 though.

But the big multiplat third party titles will be a major part of the holiday best sellers anyways, so it is not like the ps4 is not going to sell due to this.

You also do realize that both those games sell extremely well on Xbox right? Hell Call of Duty has an exclusive partnership with MS that will also move Xbox Ones. Last year was the Advanced Warfare bundle. Just checking Battlefield Hardline stats right now and while PS4 does have more 24h peak users and about 10k more users than Xbox One right now, the fact that Xbox One has literally sold half the consoles as Sony and yet keeps pretty close in software sales especially for shooters leads me to think it's going to be enough.

Third party will probably be the big sellers this year, but I think Halo, Forza, Tomb Raider will be enough. But even if it isn't, it will be beast sales again this holiday.

Third parties will no doubt rule once again, which is my point; Halo 5 doesn't matter that much because it's going to be outclassed by two bigger fps games.

Of course we'll wait and see if there's any surprises at E3. But after watching Microsoft pull out all the stops with three big exclusives, and over a month's worth of price cuts with free games galore, only to barely beat the PS4 which had a remastered game in September...it's crystal clear who owns the mindshare of consumers.

I doubt it. Unfortunately Microsoft's insistence on putting most of their eggs in the fall basket, I think in some ways could do them more harm than good. You release most of your big games at a time where the market is already crowded with other massive games, and expect them to have major impact? They really ought to spread their releases better. It's not like MCC, Sunset Overdrive or Forza Horizon 2 sold especially well. In many ways I think Sunset Overdrive would have done better as a spring/summer release.

To be fair X1 did incredibly well in November, December was much closer. That said Halo and Gears are basically the only MS exclusives that really move the needle in term of sales. I have no idea how well Halo 5 will do but my guess is that it will do significantly better than MCC.

All they have is halo 5, Quantem break, tomb raider, Forza 5, fable legends, and possibly a gears of war collection so I don't see what the big deal is. Are any of these games even relevant anyways?

Besides ps4 plays third party games better anyways.

^ Er....Halo still is a pretty good seller. Quantum break looks pretty cool and has potential for a new IP. TR i'm pissed about cause i have to wait till it hits PS4, Forza 5's appeal is limited sure, fable will be meh and gears might do decently.

As you can see, its uneven, but certainly lightyears behind not being relevant.

What i think is strange about this is that MS does this even though its almost assured that PS4 and XB1 sell out of their stock during BF and December. So why are you gonna go hard on those two months when your sales are limited to begin with?

Its absolutely leaving the other 10 months high and dry with nothing to keep the momentum going with very little returns. Sony spacing out their library is really good cause it gives people things to look forward too throughout the year.

Everyone is talking about BB right now and its just March. Think about a hard hitting exclusive dropping every 3 to 4 months throughout the year in that vein instead of like 4 in 2 months period(or one month even). Its absolutely just a fact that many of those games get smothered over other games

I wouldn't say this at all. There's people still hanging on to their 360s that are waiting for Halo 5 to release to make the jump.

Halo 5 is the biggest exclusive coming to the system this year that will push people into current gen. A system having the combo of COD, Battlefront, on top of Halo 5 should be really attractive to a good amount of gamers in North America.

Of course we'll wait and see if there's any surprises at E3. I wouldn't call selling more than 600K over the competition during the Holiday season "barely". I mean, if that's the case then what's the point in making a big deal about the PS4 winning these early months of the year when console sales are lower?

Anyway, last Holiday did show that the PS4 will more than likely be fine this year even with the Uncharted 4 delay. Third party support will help the system.

Is Halo 5 that big of a deal anymore?

I mean, yes, it pulls some numbers, but is it THE big deal it once was?

It has Halo in the title. It will sell.

So, um, yeah.

agreed. It will sell if it turns out really good, but its not going sell tons just because it says Halo on the case.

You'd be surprised at the power of a big name.

yup quality is secondary when it comes to 343

Games hitting in september whether its completed or not, master chief collection style.

So one game decides the future output quality of an entire game studio? Oh boy. I'd love to see your opinion of Paramount Pictures.

for me, Halo 5 is MS and 343 last chance at making things right for the Halo franchise, a delay can only make things better.

That's not entirely true. Duke Nukem Forever was delayed to hell and back and look how that turned out.

A delay would only lead to disappointment, at this point in time, and it'd allow the wound that the MCC caused to fester just a bit longer.

They better knock halo 5 out the park.I actually think Halo 5 is going to be real good, like 343 has a lot to prove.

Xbox should do well in the US

when was the last time MS released an exclusive in the first like 8 months of the year? gears of war judgement?

It is kind of crazy we are talking about the holiday season already. It is almost unbelievable that Xbox won't have a single retail exclusive for almost a year.

Last year (Kinect Sports Rivals -- hence why people think that they didn't lol).

Came very close to saying this year but forgot that Screamride released for the Xbox 360 too.

Well Halo 5 has to not be mediocre like Halo 4 and not be broken for months like the MCC. I'm not pre-ordering on the fear that this is once again a rushed and broken mess.

Huh?

The PS4 only had UC4 for the Holidays?!?

Last I checked they had a sizable number of other exclusives coming, including heavy hitters.

With the news of Zelda for Wii U not reaching it's 2015 goal for release and Uncharted 4 being delayed until 2016, both PS4 and Wii U both lost their big holiday exclusive game to next year, while Halo 5, Xbox One's big holiday exclusive is set to launch this year. With neither PS4 or Wii U having a big exclusive for the holiday, could this be the holiday season for the Xbox One to really shine?

Seriously does have better games aside from Bloodbourne I can't name one exclusive I actually play on PS4 aside from HD Remakes like the admittedly amazing TLOU.

I'm sure Nintendo has SOMETHING ready for the holidays (Xenoblade X or Star Fox, maybe?), and I think most people who are interested in Halo 5 already own the console, so no, I don't expect it to be very "defining".

On the other hand, the new Tomb Raider could give them a big advantage.
