How do I backstab? I've got
Gascoigne down to beast mode every time without healing and I use the music box I found on him but I can't seem to figure out how to get a backstab on him? I'd be having no issues if I could dish out some good damage during that short window or actually get a chance to heal.

You have to stun the enemiy first using R2 (I believe charging the attack or not, whatever); and then press R1.

What axe is this ?!

The 1st one, in your 3 choices at the start of the game. I have done only 1 upgrade to it.

Started this a couple hours ago. I just killed the Cleric Beast and called it a night, but I'm loving it so far.

Going back to R1 as the main attack button after pretty much every other game uses R2 is weird at first, but I'm getting the hang of it now.

Also, please, tell me I'm not the only moron who wasted a couple molotovs by pressing Square for no reason.

And no, you're not. I already wasted some molotovs and also sacrifice some health to get unnecessary ammo many times. But now I'm getting familiarized with the controls mapping and have been doing it less frequently!

I think Eileen The Crow quest bugged out on me. She doesn't show up in any of the spots the guides mention... Damn I really wanted that armor set.

My fiancé and I are playing together. We are early on.

How big a limiting factor will the fact that we have to use Insight when we use the bell?

The guy at the end of
Eileen the Crows quest
is fucking impossible

Let him drain his own HP with the katana till he pops his one (and only) blood vial. Then lure him to the stairs and throw poison knives till he's poisoned then play it safe. You can also use bone marrow ash and try and shoot him on the stairs for good damage

In the
Forbidden Forest
now and with 20+ Insight I'm terrified and getting my ass kicked by
the enraged versions of normal monsters (glowing red aura) and those creepy hairy shadow monsters that spawn out of thin air.
Should I spend my Insight to drop it down below 20? Will that make the enemies easier? The reason I ask is because there's nothing in the shop I really want at the moment.

Finally had some time to seek my teeth in the game tonight, the game is fantastic. I love the parry system, it's really useful in boss fights. I just beat the Blood Starved beast at first attempt, it was surprisingly easy. So far only Father Gascoigne caused me trouble, I think I tried 10 times before beating the shit out of him. Unfortunately I learned later that I could use the Tiny Music Box to beat him... :(

So far I'm impressed. It's highly addictive. The threaded cane/whip feels like I'm playing a modern Castlevania.

Fourth boss spoilers

Went my first go around with Amelia. Some real bs going on here with the tracking on her jump (changing directions in midair). Also seems like the gun doesn't work at all against her, making parry's not really an option for this fight and a two handed weapon better. She's very different from the first three bosses. In fact she seems more like an old school souls boss than any of the other ones.

How do I get to the Cleric Beast? I unlocked the shortcut in Yarnam where I can head left and see two brick ogres.

Youre very near it!
Kill the 2 ogres, or evade them, turn right going up the stairs, then look back. You're gonna see a door. Enter it, kill the enemies inside, open the door from the other side (little shortcut in case you need to come back), go up the stairs and you're going to get to a bridge. You're gonna see werewolves in the right side, don't go there... turn left and face one ogre and some crowns, behind them, there it is.
;-)

How did you beat him? I can't find a strategy that works.

You're probably a little more than half way... Maybe. It's hard to tell with how many optional areas you've found.

The areas I've found that seem optional are
Old Yharnam and the Nightmare Lecture. I bailed once I got to Nightmare Frontier and intend to delve further into the nightmare worlds soon. I've beaten Paarl too.
I haven't been to a chalice dungeon either and will probably play around with those tomorrow.

Despite finding nearly every single secret room in the game so far, I totally missed her in the sewers. She never showed up for me again. Such a shame as I wanted that armour.

Uhh... I think I glitched the game:

[Shaded woods to Clinic shortcut]
I don't think I can get to cainwurst anymore. To preface, let me say after the creepy doctor chick took her first patient, I started attacking her door and pissed her off to the point where she went away. A friend found the way to get into the back of the clinic to check what that crazy doctor did to the people he sent them, fought her and got the invitation to Cainwurst.

On the other hand, when I went there I she was no where to be found and there was no invitation. Now, this is where things get glitchy. I walked back and forth over a spot in the clinic multiple times when I was looking around and I would get 2200-some souls everytime I did for some weird reason.
I backed out after getting 8000, as I don't really want to glitch souls. But did I ruin anything? Is there
another way to get to that dungeon?

After 4th boss/
During the nighttime phase where the moon is out.
I just revisited
the place where I fought Father G. and was attacked by a hunter. Thought that was strange and fought him but then a second hunter appeared so I ran. What's the deal with those guys?

How did you beat him? I can't find a strategy that works.

Without the Tiny music box, I learned how to use my pistol against him to parry his attack so I can deliver a huge blow (Apprx 3 times) before he transforms. Then I threw 3 molotov at him while running around the huge crypt/monument in the middle of the stage.

Thats how I did it.
