Xenoblade Chronicles X: April 10th Doll Presentation [up: video with subtitles]

Watched again, with the subs! Thanks for the hard work.

This game hits all the right spots for me. It's "true next-gen console jrpg on old gen hardware" all over again :] Overfeatured, over the top.

I hope money is easy to come by in the game because after watching that translated video, it looks like the dolls will be quite pricey to maintain and buy new weapons for... especially with 4+ dolls (one for each character). Ouch.

I'm going to have 7 personal Dolls, and maybe the rest can share one. :S

Neg, I read it right, but maybe I didn't represent myself properly. I like the linear story structure of the past games/this kind of game and that is one of the things I was looking forward to. Basically even though I wasn't a big fan of the way the story ended up in Xenoblade it is pretty much one of my favorite formats. Major linear story that leads you through the world with a shit ton of side stuff that you can handle along the way.

I don't really like how that stuff about the story sounds as like someone else said, I love when the story is progressed in a linear fashion like Xenoblade. Of course, it totally depends how they do it and if it keeps me interested in the entire time.

In Xenoblade the way it was resulted in story being kind of segregated from the rest of the game world. The way I'm understanding everything so far is that everything is more closely tied together, so while we'll still have an overarching plot, that plot will be driven and influenced by what we do in the world. We'll uncover story through interacting with the world and NPCs, we'll progress in NLA and help BLADE and humanity at large through the union etc. The unions seem like a key aspect in this regard, they serve as a vessel to tie story and progression more into quests. It sounds pretty intriguing personally. I mean it's hardly going to be Skyrim story levels, but it's not going to be the same as Xenoblade either. We know for fact there's a substantial story, they're telling it slightly differently but I think it sounds pretty good so far.

If you make sure to eject before a doll gets destroyed it will regenerate its damaged parts on its own, as I understood from the video. So you'll only have to pay up if you wreck it and aren't covered by insurance.

I just found out that

Party character spoiler
Melia is 88 years old... the what?

You're in the wrong thread about the wrong Xenoblade game^^

I know I edited it

I have both threads up

also with the subbed video

I hope maybe later in the story your mecha can just transform into a jet, so I can just make my Macross mech

Thats exactly how its still being done. Now its on a much larger more sophisticated scale.

Are we sure that's how it's still being done? I haven't linked this because I assumed it's been dissected in one of the Xenoblade topics, but Takahashi himself has sorta said otherwise.

Without revealing any spoilers, what can fans of Xenoblade Chronicles look forward to when the franchise comes to Wii U? Will it feel familiar for returning fans, or will it be a departure from what was put together in Chronicles?

Takahashi: I think Xenoblade Chronicles X will have a different play feel from the first Xenoblade Chronicles game. Xenoblade Chronicles is a pretty linear game, but Xenoblade Chronicles X is non-linear, and I think a lot of the gameplay will depend on that.

Xenoblade Chronicles’ core thrust is centered around its story, but Xenoblade Chronicles X is shaping up to be a game with more focus placed on action elements that take advantage of the open world instead of the story aspects. However, both games will retain a common feel based on the core elements that serve as the foundation for the series. It may feel different to play, but it’ll provide a new way of having fun within the same Xenoblade series.

I wonder if it's going to be like Xenogears where as the story went on gradually you spent more and more time in gears and only were on foot for specific parts of the story.

Obviously the game doesn't appear to be as linear as Xenogears, but they could make it so certain "missions" in the storyline you couldn't use your dolls for whatever reason. Though, with the whole doll defense thing that might not be the case, as you can still fight big monsters on foot if you have dolls present.

I just wonder how it will work for the storyline, considering the balance might be hard to pull off. Xenogears just forced you to use your gears, but again, it was a more linear story it seems than Xenoblade X.

There is still a central story, if we look at the events shown, like the appearance of the alien mech in the previous trailer or the full blown war in the current one, but it seems that the pace and the running of the story pretty much depends on the faction you chose and the pace of completing the quests (probably main ones focusing on the purpose of your faction). So the progression might not be linear, but seems to be in a no way chaotic and it will lead you in the end on a common path.

Thanks a lot for the translation, it's was so much better watching the subtitled video, especially the online bits are clearer now and it all sounds so good.

SHIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

I did not know this game had multiplayer, let alone whatever the hell that was. That looks so fun

I just wanted to say that this is the most exciting faux MMO/Space Opera/Fashion Show/City Builder/Relationship Simulator/Hunting/Mech Simulation/Kaiju Battler/JRPG in the past few months.

Yes, it will still be done that way. The only way it wont be done that way is if it was a procedurally generated world, with generated quests.

There is a lot more freedom, but ultimately, it is still a hand designed world (as oppossed to being generated or extruded from a height map and then littered with assets here and there), and the freedom will be the obsfucation that hides 'the path' and keeps it from being obvious.

The game will always have the same key events, and cutscenes, that will be unlocked when the player activates certain flags, and then goes to a certain place to activate the trigger. There will be multiple ways to do this (likely precisely 8 paths), however, once the player has progressed enough on a path to be powerful enough, main story events will activate, like the Growth army marching on the city.

I just have one (two?) question regarding the Dolls: how does deploying them work? Do you have to go to your 'garage' in NLA every time you want to use them, or can you deploy them to your/random location in the field? And what happens if you leave your Doll in the field somewhere and go somewhere else? Can you call it in? If you go back to NLA, will it be there waiting for you?

If you can think of it, chances are it's in this game.

Pretty much right?

Heeeeey JeffZero!!! You use the same name on GameFAQs' RPG boards? (I'm usaa)

ME3 never forced you to play MP. I didn't even have Xbox Live Gold and I got the "best" ending with sufficient galaxy readiness. Playing MP was just an alternative solution to doing every possible sidequest.

There is also nothing forcing you into online here from the looks of it. Everything can be done with AI.
I think before the Extended Cut DLC came out for ME3, the EMS requirement of 4000 for one of the endings was unattainable in the vanilla game even doing every possible sidequest, so multiplayer to raise your readiness rating was required - but then Extended Cut lowered that requirement to 3100, which is doable with single-player.

But back to this game, I thought from the video the implication was that some of the better Dolls and weapons are only available as rewards for fighting the "World Enemies" (basically raid bosses), which only appear after your network squad has cleared a certain number of missions / quests:
Clearing things like Squad Missions and Quests progresses our investigation of the planet, and increases the global Conquest Domination level. But as we progress more and more, creatures called World Enemies awaken, who are even stronger than Overed. They’re incredibly difficult to fight, but the rewards are well worth it. If you want the very best Dolls and equipment, you won’t want to miss these fights. Some World Enemies appear at specific times, so try challenging those as well.

In that way going online might be "required" to have access to some of the Dolls and equipment, and it's unclear whether you'd have similar access in the offline single-player game. But even if you have to go online to fight World Enemies, it doesn't seem like the game is going to force you to do live co-op vs. doing squad quests with AI members.

So guys which Doll type are you going to choose? I'm thinking Inferno or Lailah

Lailah's my favourite so far, looks sleek and sexy. Formula is pretty nice too though, since it's the one on the boxart. The one they showed off is the AD0130 Formula model... and there's rumors of AD0150 Formula.ST models... will they upgrade sometime during the game?

I wounder if this sentiment is a side effect of things being so customizable. People wanting to recreate their favorite other series designs I mean, instead of letting the new thing stand on it's own feet. I don't really know if this is a bad thing, just something I've never really understood.
Creativity can wait until after I explore another world in a Gundam.

Formula/Lailah. Sleek and pointy da bess.

holy shit, the mechs in this game are amazing. are squads random or can you choose who is in your squad?
From the menus in the video, it looked like you could choose between three different types of squads. One for "Life Points," which seems to be solo-oriented, one for "Conquest," probably for people who want to get notifications constantly and fight all the world enemies, and one for "Friends," which I would guess means you and your friends can gather into the same squad in some capacity.

They haven't shown anything yet, but I would imagine they've included some way to either skip travel to them, or have them warp to you. Or call them back to the garage/hangar somehow.

I am willing to bet they will utilize solutions to these problems similar to the way they handled them in Xenogears.

Which pretty much means the anwer is yes, that is an option to all of the above.

Seems like everyone is going to look like Formulas and Lailahs lol. I may just go Inferno to be one a kind :)

I think I'll start with a yellow, orange, and red urban, with a green visor.

Anyone know if this will have off-screen play?

Yes, yes there will be.

I thought the video said not to worry because Elma and Lyn could help you on the fights if you didn't want to do them with other people, including World Enemies.
Well I'm on my phone atm, but if you watch the subbed video Iyakku uploaded on YouTube, it should be there :P

I'm in love with the Wels, looks so agile and it's Elma's favorite ;D

A picture comparing all the shown dolls. Can even make out some stats and what not. What is interesting to me is the price difference of the complete dolls, with the heavier ones being more expensive by a lot. I wounder what justifies that added cost.

Oh yeah, I don't think you'll have to do co-op with other people and you can do the squad quests with AI, but will the World Enemies appear for you if you stay offline and never log onto the network? It seemed like the World Enemies appear once a network squad has cleared a certain number of missions, and some also only appear at certain times (like "event" bosses that are only available for a limited time?), so it didn't seem like they were regular bosses you'd encounter in the single-player game. But maybe they have single-player equivalents.

They have higher stats across the board, and obviously the most durable of the bunch.

On another note, is that a level cap on the stats? Does that mean that Dolls can be obtained once you reach Level 30 (normal progression through story, no ridiculous grinding or questing)?

Well it would be odd to me if the bigger ones are just a direct upgrade over the smaller ones.

Upgrade most likely in terms of durability and firepower, but you sacrifice mobility and agility that the lighter ones offer. I'm not sure, but my speculation as another reason why heavy types are more expensive is because they probably have higher fuel capacity, which can be crucial in battles as arts consume them.
