I hear you. I need to dust off both the Sundin and Mogilny jerseys.

I wonder if the schedule this year will be the schedule from last year. If so, I'll be able to see the Leafs in Columbus.

no thanks, we already have a real hockey team here.

chicago-wolves.jpg

Could the wirtz family have fucked up hockey any worse in chicago. A minor league team outdraws them and has a more rabid fan base.

Finally a reason to post again, I've been pretty quite about this lockout on the forums, but a few of you know me and I am fairly opinionated about the whole issue, now I finally have a reason to watch sports again, a season without hockey really has shown me how terrible the other major sports are, more specificly the NBA, but I'm not going to get this thread headed in that direction. I am hoping for the best in the draft lottery, but I am realistic. Now, we sit back and wait for a team to continue to fail under the new system, and perhaps move them back to Winnipeg, where NHL hockey belongs. As for the Yahoo pool Calder, you know I'm there, ready to shock people with crazy picks, and still hopefully finish near the top :D Perhaps it's time to ressurect our little website.

Also if you wanted to slot me under certain teams, I cheer for the Penguins and Oilers. It's about time Iginla signs with his hometown team :)

The weighting seems to be so slight that they should have just did the "everyone gets a ball" thing.

Fuck off with the Iggy talk, bastard! :D

And yes, our website is definitely 100% on the comeback trail. I've actually started planning the layout a bit and was going to call you to see if we should meet for beers after work to discuss content. I'm leaning towards doing more fantasy/pool related stuff myself so maybe you can handle the bitching and moaning about the league and teams in general. Once we get it up and running a bit, I was going to check to see if there were ppl here interested in writing about their team every now and then.

Haha, that simulator rules.

Something tells me if someone from the NHL is up there hitting "reset" they won't be doing it until it comes up "small market canadian team". ;)

It's a good thing I'm leaving Toronto before the hockey season starts - saves me the effort of killing a crazed Leafs fan!

</prematureTrashTalk>

Leaf fans get on the Alexander Steen bandwagon now! Not only is he probably going to be much better than any other Leaf prospect, but he's Thomas Steen's son! Thomas "Grums" Steen was one of the best people and greatest talents the Jets ever had, and his kid should be a hell of a person and fantastic asset to his club both on and off the ice just like his old man.
grums.jpg

Anyone (I'm looking at dem here) have a link to that amazing goal Steen scored last year in Sweden? I know I have it at home but I don't remember who hosted it.

Oilers need a replacement for Nedved...Naslund or Iggy...that'd be pretty sweet. The Oilers are looking pretty stacked actually! Just need one more player.

Another team that looks stacked? Pheonix. Thier missing peice...the goalie.

I'm so inclined to cheer for multiple teams. I'm only 5 hours away from Edm so I can watch some games there. I'm hoping the Penguins do well, as well.

Kevin Lowe keeps talking about picking up a #1C and a puck moving D.

Come on Demitra and Neids! =P

I worked yesterday, and I work tomorrow and friday as well, but for some reason my boss told me she couldn't come into the office today. I didn't argue, I finally got a day to sleep in and do nothing.

So it's 1:00 and I get a phone call. Just a friend calling on her way to work, she wants to watch a movie tonight. That works out. She also wants to play some pool. That's cool. Eventually I wind up calling her retarded and she tells me in a sarcastic tone that the lockout is over.

I laugh it off, what a bitch. Joking about that kind of thing isn't funny, even though I know she's lying. I've been told so many times by both league and player representatives that the lockout was about to be "over", and it never happened. Every time Bob Mackenzie started talking about the ramiffications of free agency in leue of a certain end to the strike, I'd get my hopes up, and every time, it didn't materialize.

You ever read that Calvin and Hobbes series where he orders the beanie- the hat with a propeller on it- and finds out it takes 6-8 weeks for it to arrive? Every day after school he dashes into his house and with wide eyes, desperately asks his mom if it's arrived yet. Despite being consistently rejected day after day, he couldn't let go of the surely eventual feeling of enjoying that beanie. So he'd do the same thing day after day, week after week. Until he eventually couldn't raise his hopes anymore.

Then one day, he slowly walked through his front door and declared, "my beanie didn't come today, did it.."

That's how I felt when I turned on my computer after hearing her tell me it was over. I knew she was saying it just to get a rise out of me, just to get my hopes up and dash them. Like Calvin, I still had to ask, but inside, I knew it was baseless, there was no point. The beanie would never come. So as I clicked on my browser's icon, and my home page of TSN(.ca) loaded up before my eyes, I finally knew how he felt when his mom revealed the package that had arrived today. Calvin finally got his beanie, and I finally got my hockey.

I missed you, hockey.

Damn that Steen goal is a beauty. Only a step away from Datsyuk or Afinogenov's brilliant toe-drags from 2004, and those were some of the nicest goals I've ever seen.

Did some dude on TSN say that Lindros and Glen Murray would be Leafs by the start of the season?

LOL yes, yes they did. The rumor mill for free agents has begun, Lindross and Murray to TO, Kovalev to Pittsburgh, Jason Allison to resign with the Kings now that hes no longer hurt (not sure if that ones even close to being true)

Sabres are going to make the conference finals next year at least, mark it down. They better at least. They've been preparing for a deal like this (and playing mediocre hockey) for years now. Buffalo won the lockout!

Oh glorious day, the lockout finally looks to be over!

I'm a Canuck fan.

Despite what the media say I'm confident Nazzy and Bert will be suiting up for Vancouver this season. GO Nonis GO!

Got home from work and ive been sitting on front of the tv for a few hours.. and i gotta say...I'm a bit surprised at how much attention TSN and Sportsnet are giving this. Complete NHL coverage.

Though i guess i shouldnt be suprised.. they do it on trade deadline day too.

Slowest sports day of the year

There is nothing else to cover today

I will be rooting for the nashville predators.

Dont laugh, I am also a dolphins fan. I am used to this.

OMG JESUS CHRIST GLEN HEALEY YOU ARE GETTING STUPIDER AS I WATCH.

Even Bob McKenzie (who normally never argues or takes sides) was stunned at Glen Healey trying to say the players "won" the CBA because it has a "market place". :lol

The Predators made the playoffs last year, and are a young team. There's something wrong with cheering a Nashville team in the NHL, but not with the Predators themselves, they're only going to get better this year.

Dude, you've got to find video/pictures of the players on the bench laughing when that happened. That was just as funny, if not funnier.

Hmmm... guess I'm the only Thrashers fan on the boards. That's ok, we've got Dany "The Killer" Heatley back. It's on like motherfucking Donkey Kong, son!

Why would you call him The Killer, isn't that Gilmore's nickname? Heatley's strength don't lie in his toughness or tenacity, it's his ability to drive to the net that makes him unique.

^^ Heatley killed Snyder when he drove his ferrari into a wall

Here is my anarchy idea. I want to sit on a bag of pennies or find some way to warm them up (batteries, hot pack) and on the first game back I'm gonna chuck the pennies on the ice. Warm pennies melt the ice and are hard to pick up. Money symbolizes greed. Me = give big fuck you to NHL for wasting my time.

This offseason is gonna be a riot.
It's like gym class and all the captains (GMs) will be picking their players =D

I reckon that coaching will be especially important this coming season.

You = make a ref or player break his ankle. Enjoy it when security drags you out back and you fall down a flight of stairs a few times on your way to getting your ass thrown out.

Awww. That's beautfiul.

God I was really missing Hockey lately. It's been so long, I fired up another season of ESPN NHL 2k5 recently. I'm so happy it's back. Now all that needs to be done is to get everybody responsible for this mess fired so we can get down to business.

DROP THAT PUCK! :D

Ranger fan.

And I hope the NHL struggles mightily. Bettman and the board of govenors are an extremely unlikable group of fucks who care little for us long time fans. They want new people and new money. This whole CBA struggle was mostly due to their stupid fucking "footprint" teams in the Southern US, who will never survive even if they make the salary cap limit 5 bucks per team. That's why there will be shootouts and new jerseys and 20 teams in the playoffs. They're not looking to appeal to Leaf fans and Ranger fans and Flyer fans and Habs fans and Canucks fans, because these teams were all fine before the lockout! But who cares because hockey is back, right?

Trades will be nearly non existent. Rosters will turn over heavily at the end of each season. The already shit talent pool will be even further diluted thanks to a fair amount of players staying over in Europe. Plenty of young Europeans won't even come over now because they can make just as much there. It's going to be like the AHL, but with shittier jerseys. But who cares because hockey is back, right?

mumble.. fuckin nhl... mumble...

NHL was right.

NHLPA was very wrong.

You know what the most profitable team was in 2003-2004?

Toronto

Do you know how much money Toronto made?

around 2 to 3 million dollars.

TWO TO THREE MILLION.

That is extremely sad especially for one of the largest sports brands in north america.

That's with crazy merchandise sales and absolutely crazier ticket prices The prices you pay for a single seat all the way at the top with obstructed view can get you 2 tickets at other games front row or bottom bowl.

Now what hopefully happens is that after a few years and NHL becomes really profitable, the tickets will start falling to more reasonable prices. Maybe not necessarily in toronto, where they sell out regardless, but at least in other cities.

If i remember correctly, there was a total of like 5 teams that had profit and the rest lost money. some of them losing 15-20+ million.

The change was quite needed and in a few years Bettman will be -loved-. Why? Ticket prices will drop, team skill will balance out... add in the rule changes and hockey will become more exciting...

I see NHL becoming far more popular than it has before. and down the road becoming a far more popular sport in the US than it was just 1 year ago. Which means TV deals and advertisement desire would go up. More advertising dollars because of more profit means less commercials with figure skaters going around talking about how cool hockey is....

i don't see how anyone loses!

You're not telling me you seriously believe those numbers, are you? Probably every corporation on the planet uses "creative accounting." This isn't X-Files shit, it's simple truth. Accountants don't make 6 figures a year and need top of the line degrees to add and subtract. Every company shifts their balance sheets around to make what they want look strong look strong, and to make what they want to look weak look weak. And coming up to the Big Showdown year, where finances were going to be talked about over and over again? C'mon dude. That is painfully naive.

Case in point. The Rangers say they lost money in the 03-04 season. However, just yesterday it was revealed that the CEO of Cablevision (the Rangers owner) received a $2.8 million bonus because the company did so well last year. But, wait! The Rangers said they lost money! It's all bullshit.

This is what took so long to get a CBA together, putting in checks and balances into teams' accounting practices. And there's still probably a dozen ways teams can and will skirt it.

They used a 3rd party auditer to backup their own internal audit. The numbers matched.

Rangers lost money.

Cablevision's CEO got money because cablevision was doing better. There was no NHL for the last 3 months of the year so there's less incurred losses.

You think I'm painfully naive, whatever.

So how does cheques going into teams change the way the PLAYERS think? That's why the CBA took so long, because they were up to their ears in shit about the financials or rather what they thought were the financials of the NHL.

The NHLPA doesn't trust the auditors numbers, no problem. But whose numbers are they using, basing off the 54% cap then? Which somehow magically goes down to $37~40 million.... which in turn somehow ends up being in the same ballpark for league revenues?

People somehow get this awful idea that the NHL is in great shape. When your top market is Canada but 80% of your league is in the US, that shows how much bad shape your in.

DopeyFish said:

I don't think you're painfully naive, I just find it hard (nay, impossible) to believe the Levitt Report and all of their claims of poverty were 100% above board, so to speak. I just started laughing even considering the concept. Let me throw some names at you. Bill Wirtz. Jeremy Jacobs. James Dolan. Ed Snyder. Peter Karmanos. Charles Wang. You believe these people? They and/or their other companies are all notorious for backhanded and shady and illegal business practices. Bill Wirtz, for crying out loud! The guy is so evil he should be carrying around a pitchfork. These are the people behind the National Hockey League.

DopeyFish said:

That sounds like the point I just made, that the league almost blew itself up and continues to misfire in their decisions all for protecting the franchises and getting in new fans in those non hockey areas. So what's your suggestion?

And let's get something clear, too, since I read this garbage from a lot of Canadian hockey fans. The US is both a big plus AND minus for the NHL. I hate when people say it's the US's fault. Hockey is very strong in New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Dallas, San Jose, Columbus, Minnesota, Buffalo, and while it's seen much better days in Boston and Chicago, those are markets that could be huge again. You all need to cut the "it's the US's fault" bullshit. The US has plenty of awesome hockey markets. And some absolutely awful ones. THOSE are the problem, not the whole friggin' country.

where did i say it's US's fault?

I'm just saying that the US markets need development and some things like the on-ice product or ticket prices make some people possibly being interested in the sport wary and god-awful CBAs that drain any chance to make the team playing field even and important marketing deals make interest in the game dwindle. In turn ESPN2 rejects you.

I think under this new system the league will take off. It makes more sense for the top clubs, it makes more sense for the bottom clubs, it makes sense for the fans and it definately makes sense for the players (which were way overpaid)

There's not enough competition these days either.

It's almost always the same lineup going into the playoffs and the same lineup not making the playoffs every year (st. louis blues have yet to miss a playoffs in 27 years!) so the richers clubs were basically beating down on the smaller clubs because players just see that the contract would have one more zero and boom. Now that it's even teams like pittsburgh and chicago or new york will get back into playoffs, and create some of the lost excitement.
