The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

Some people said that the youtuber event footage was captured at High settings. Some people say that it was Ultra.

My feeling? We'll have to wait until release to finally be confident in what Ultra looks like.

Keep an eye out on the PC Hi-Res Image thread after the game is released.

CDPR confirmed that they were running ultra except for 1 setting (presumably hair works). But yeah, we haven't really seen any high res images with everything maxed out that emerged from that event. All official screens are a "mix of High & Ultra". They've been almost deliberately vague about it throughout.

I believe the CE comes with an empty steelbook AND the standard edition with all the goodies in the box.

What about the Best Buy one? It looks like it won't bring the normal box so I wonder if it will still have the extra goodies. Also, has anyone had bad experiences pre ordering at Best Buy? I'm asking because I'm worried that they will sell my steel book edition to someone else and give me a regular one, since I can only pick it up in the afternoon after work.

depending on when you preordered and how early, you either get a steelcase version or a normal version.

I don't know about you guys, but honestly.... i'm very tired from The Witcher 3s marketing bombardment. Cyberpunk 2077 is the game about which I wanna know more at this point. I hope there will be some news at this years E3.

It's the cost of attempting to sell millions of copies to millions of people. Cyberpunk 2077 can only benefit from Witcher 3's marketing bombardment. Hold fast.

Is it true that no copies were given where there was retail ps4 but it was given only to those who had debug units , some reviewers were declined the review copies and were told they would receive next week when the patch is up

Really hoping this day one patch works some miracles, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah I'm definitely staying wary, but I don't have a gaming rig or Xbone so PS4 is my only choice at the moment. Like I said, I played through GTA V on 360 and TLoU on PS3 without it bothering me so I doubt this will. But man, it's getting harder to stomach frame rates like that as time goes on, especially after playing so much first party Nintendo stuff and indie games within the past few years.

it comes with the

My geralt was looking pretty swank by the end of W2

Hope to see some cool pieces in W3

Definitely going to miss this kind of armour design, which seems largely absent in The Witcher 3. It's a stylistic change, TW2's a bit more theatrical over TW3's practical suits, but I love all the layers, add ons, and details.

Im curious to hear his thoughts on the Bombcast.
His thoughts on the Bombcast imo make it pretty clear that he wasn't too interested in playing it in the first place, he almost sounded glad that it crashed on him two times so he could put it away and let GBeast review the PC version.

Vinny will love the fuck out of that game.

If anything, all the hullabaloo over The Witcher 3 2015 versus The Witcher 3 2013/2014 means it's going to be quite a long time before Cyberpunk 2077 resurfaces, which is a good thing in its own way -- better CDPR unveil a product it knows it can deliver.

They indicate pretty good performance for the PS4: "only occasionally dipping below 30 frames per second, pre day one patch."

That's sound much better then what everyone else made it sound like.
Now this sounds far more encouraging. So it's a solid 30FPS even without the day one patch. It's almost as if some reviewers played a different version of the game or were exaggerating.

As for the issue of bugs.

I don't know of any game that doesn't have bugs.

Unless it's something seriously hardcoded into the game, most issues can usually be fixed via updates and patches, no?

The Witcher 3 is CDProjekt Red's most ambitious game to date, and their first open world game too. I would think bugs in a large game are given.

In fact I don't know of many open world games that was near bug free on release.

There is also CDPR's known history with decent post release support. I mean they happened to create Enhanced Editions for both of the previous games and release them entirely as a free update.

I am not concerned about future updates.

Unless it's something like the Witcher 1's Cutscene slowdown with DOF is checked, I don't think there will be much to worry about.

That would be a good one too, I'm joining you on the Digital train btw LOL

man...I've missed out on a lot of gaming news today. I've been so busy upgrading my PS4 harddrive from a 1TB to a 2TB, not to mention, the whole backup restore thingy. I'm just now finishing up. Digital train? Nah, I'm still a disc based gamer. The whole thing with P.T. taught me the dangers of solely going digital (also glad I was able to save P.T. during my upgrade). ^_^

SPCTRE. You've mischaracterised Jeff Gerstmann's position completely, because he wanted Witcher 3 to convert him but from the few hours he played, but the movement and feel of the game put him off. Here's a transcript and timestamp from the Bombcast:

23:15 - 35:30 Jeff Gerstmann's impressions of Witcher 3

"Maybe this will end up being the Witcher game for me. I don't think this is the Witcher game for me. I ended up not playing much of it. They sent it to us on PS4, the build that had the Day 1 Patch pre-installed and then it crashed twice on the Gwent tutorial (Gwent is their card game that they put in there). I've not played a ton of it. I don't know, man. The combat is exceedingly straightforward. You hit the block button, if you time your block well it's a parry. You can swing the shit out of your sword, there is a stamina meter but it seems fairly forgiving compared to how I remember the Witcher 2 being. There's something about the way it moves. Felt the PS4 version based on what I saw didn't particularly run great. There were parts of it that looked perfectly acceptable but I don't know, seemed a little janky. Some of the character movement, some of the animation in cutscenes and stuff like that didn't really - you think of that game as a graphical powerhouse - ehh it looks really good but it didn't...

I'm not saying this to scare people. I literally played 3 hours of it but I also had that and it crashed a couple of times...Basically you start preparing for a hunt as it's going through the motions, you're chasing for Yennifer (who's a lady). You're hunting her down originally. To get information, you have to do odd jobs for people. In the tavern, you're talking to people, shaking them down for info, you gotta go talk to these guards and they kinda say like 'hey it's really cool you want to know this information but we have a Griffin that's fucking people up around here'. They'll kick you off into setting up traps and hunting this Griffin. You're out in the world. They do some really nice stuff with some of the movement, like you get on your horse, you just double tap R3/L3 to call your horse and get on it. You can basically get on roads with the horse and hold down X, it'll follow the road even if it curves which is pretty cool. You have to know where you're going, though. Holding X is the middle speed, tapping X is the high speed, so you can't high speed and stick to the road I think, it'll deviate at that point. It seemed like a relatively elegant system but there's also fast travel. You'll find signs in the world and you can walk up to them and fast travel to any other sign. I wandered and found fights. Fought various enemies. Wolves. This doesn't feel like that [Witcher 2 combat]. You have a light attack, heavy attack, go to town. It's got a little bit you can have animations get interrupted if you're not timing them properly. It seems the move is to properly time your block which creates a parry opportunity which then counters off that. So you just counter off your blocks and murder wolves all day long. You start with 4-5 different spells, 1 trap. There's a pretty decent combat tutorial that you can skip if you like. The magic like Agni, the default fire spell, never seemed like that powerful anyway. It seems potentially interesting but it just there are things about it that seemed rough right out of the gate. Some of the character movement [turning radius], walking through tight doors in a tavern, just felt fidgety. The movement speed, the radius, just didn't feel right. [Momentum stuff]

I would actually sum up my time with the game with by saying I don't think it feels good. People who are more into Witcher will have a lot more to say, one way or the other, about the changes they've made and the scope of the story and stuff like that. But like, first impression kinda, you know in terms of hoping this would be the game that grabbed me - I could really go for a gigantic open world-y quest-y thing, I don't think this is the game for me. I'll check out the PC version, maybe give that a look and see if it controls a little better there or mouse and keyboard or something or what the deal is. I don't know, felt weird."

So are these framerate issues I'm reading about on both consoles? I see the tweet that says it'll be fixed on launch, but I'm just curious if it's on both systems.

We don't know neither the PC or XB1 versions were ready to be sent out to review builds. Only the PS4 version was, that's the only frame of reference to go by currently.

I would expect the XB1 to perform similarly to the PS4 version, similar hardware and all that, unless there is some parity clusterfuck about to spring up all of us unawares.

I doubt such a thing will happen though.

Gerstmann stuff

Is this really okay to talk about? I mean I think one of the Mods gave us a stern warning that this issue was to be dropped.

I don't know, just making sure.

Anyone is more then welcome to clarify on this.

I'm certain that they can deliver, it's just a question of time now :-)

Let the game come out first before they start hyping up their next game.
Of course i'm not expecting that they will start to talk about Cyberpunk 2077 right after The Witcher 3's release next week, but E3 is the right place I think to at least tell us something about it :-)

It will be rough to wait until late summer to buy and play this... current PC is way too old and I don't want to run everything at min spec. Will be fun when I can play it on my new rig in a few months though. :)

Cool. Thanks.
