Elder Scrolls Online console versions don't require CDkey, rental and resale possible

To clarify, you will need a unique game registration code in order to play the game, and used copies will not be eligible to receive a key if the code has already been redeemed.

Not really a surprise considering it's an MMO, although I think it may be news for some console Elder Scrolls players as they're used to the game media being the game media, not the box basically being a license.

UPDATE -- U-Turn! - Bethesda have clarified Zenimax's original statement was incorrect - the game does NOT need a key to use and the media can be resold. ""The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code, as with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification," Bethesda said in a statement this afternoon. "Any previous statements counter to this were incorrect."

Eh, its a MMO not entirely surprising. I hope people are aware of this fact and don't get suckered into buying used copies.

Welp, time to take this out of my Gamefly Q.

If they offer a timed trial, I'll try it. But I'm not interested in coughing up $60 without playing it for myself.

For the record I think the game is great and looks fantastic for an MMO - so digital is way to go if you're considering. ~60gb download though.

I wonder what will be the first single player game to do this and return us to microsofts vision of the future. I don't believe ms or Sony said anything about preventing third parities from doing such a thing.

Ugh, get this PC gaming stuff off my consoles.
Okay...? I'm not sure how people thought MMO's would work on consoles. They have to stop you from just buying the disc secondhand and getting a cheaper account, plus it wouldn't make sense to tie the account to disc if you happened to sell it down the track; the buyer would get an account already played.

Why can't it be like every other online game on consoles? I mean, what's the reasoning why MMOs can't be resold but online MP shooters can?

I'm buying digotally for my ps4 as i have 2 machine for me and my lad, does this mean i only get 1 key and he can't play it? Because if so fuck that.

Honestly I have no clue. I understand where you are coming from in that games like Destiny or CoD are tied to your PSN or Live account, but I guess MMO's are just so tied to the PC platform that porting them over means developers will just take what works on PC.

Interesting. Has there ever been another console game that you couldn't buy used, or is this a first?
There was the weird period last gen where games came with unlock keys for multiplayer. So you could technically buy them used, but you couldn't play multiplayer without buying the pass.

PlayStation Online Pass is a new program where you must first enter a voucher code to unlock multi-player online game play. First-party games that feature multi-player online, will include a voucher on the back of the software manual that will unlock this feature for the consumer. Consumers who purchase "used copies" of games that feature online multiplayer can unlock this feature by purchasing the entitlement through the PlayStation Store.

Probably don't like the metamarket of selling accounts with max level, high geared characters (or even positions in prestigious guilds). That kind of culture gets pretty detrimental for other players as well when you end up with high level players ruining dungeon runs for others because they just bought the account and have no idea what they're doing.

So... basically Xbox One before the DRM reversal?

Or every like mmo that is not F2P currently

That can still happen though, just like all other console MMO's you have an account for the game that is separate from your XBL/PSN account. The key is tied to the game account and they can still easily sell that.

Considering they ditched sub fees, I find this move a bit puzzling.

Oh well, didn't care for it much when I played the beta, would have only rented out of curiosity.

Damn, I would guess it is also account bound like Final Fantasy on the PS4. Meaning you can't play the game if it isn't with the account you bought it. /Digital version

You can't re-sell the discs of any MMO's if I recall correctly. My DCUO and FFXIVARR discs are good coasters though.

I actually hope they don't remove it from their website because of this. I have it on my Q just so I can install it without downloading 65GB.

If you have 2 machines you can install it on both but you can only play using the same account you create in game. Meaning two people can't play the game at the same time because that would be like getting 2 games for the price of 1.

Sort of. Digital versions only get one account creation. Only one person can be signed into account concurrently.
