Elder Scrolls Online console versions don't require CDkey, rental and resale possible

They are securing their money and preventing resale when people realize its a shit game. Simple.
I wouldn't have put it this harshly but I can't disagree. It comes across as them not having confidence in their game.

I mean.. Normally I would have a problem but they need to ensure that every copy is actually paid for since they ditched the sub model.
Why? Shouldn't they be ensuring that their game is good and fun to play, and won't be something people want to trade in or rent and never buy?

What did people expect?
To be like every other console game I've ever played that didn't require a one time activation code (in other words, every single one of them). Including the MMO I bought and played a year or two ago (Defiance.)

Bots are a big deal too, a bot farm would just have to make a new Xbox live account if it was just disc based. Account based means they have to buy a new key instead. Buying the keys will be way more costly and it should cut down on bots some

I think what I'm most concerned about is the paid DLC.

I wasn't interested in the subscription model and am afraid ZOS will use it in lieu of subscriptions.

I'll say it again... "So then when you sell the game you have to give them your accounts name/password linking to your email address? "

I play very few online console games so let me ask you a few questions. If I sell my copy of Destiny and eventually buy a used one, will I be able to use my old account? If I sell a game, do I lose my achievements/trophies? Do I have to re-earn achievements/trophies if I buy a used copy later?

I sold my WoW account in 2008. I never gave the guy the CDs, just the login info. I immediately bought a new copy of the game, and never took the CDs out of the box. I just used the key to make a new account and used my existing installation.

I can see why console gamers are surprised by the way this works, but as a long time MMO player, I knew I was buying an account, not a disc. (going digital anyway)

Actually there's a subscription option, which gives you access to all DLC as long as you keep your sub active.

Wait.

So if I buy this digitally, my roomate and I who share the same PS4 are screwed even if we wanted to buy a second copy? You can't install another copy of it, so basically it will only work for the account that bought it and there's no way to allow another account to play it, like Warhawk?

Genius.

You can INSTALL it how many times you want. When you get into the game it will ask you for a username and password that you created beforehand for the game, which you will use to gain access. If you have 2 different accounts just sign in with the correct username/password and you'll be fine.

With 99% of MMO's, you are paying for the CD key, not the actual content on the disc, which is why most MMO's have free client downloads.

I mean, for the type of game it is, it makes sense. It's worth playing, it's a lot better now than it was when it was more in the news.

Hopefully someone can answer this question for me.

I had no intention of selling this game because I've played it and I know I'll love it.

But will the disk install size be the same as the download size or will some of it run off the disk? Because if it doesn't I may as well order digitally since it'l be cheaper.

I bought the pc version for around 15 bucks and wasn't very impressed. I played about 5 hours and it felt more like a chore than anything. I was about to buy it on PS4, but now I am definitely not since you can't even re-sell it. The entire time I was playing, I got this annoying feeling that all of the "good stuff" was behind a pay-wall or subscription model. I'll just stick to Oblivion and Skyrim for my ES fix.

It will full install just like pretty much every other game on xb1/ps4.

edit: Also the game is too big to fit on a single BluRay so you'll be downloading some stuff no matter what.

No "good stuff" is behind a pay-wall or subscription model. Nothing is hidden behind a paywall for this game other than future DLC which you get from subbing or buying individually like other games.

No game runs off the disc in any way this generation.

So if i bought it physically and used the serial number, can i throw away the disc and keep playing?

Knowing how these consoles run, probably not. I assume you'll have to still have the disc in just like FFXIV (I assume, don't have it physically).

Damn my bad than. The very rare exception to the rule. Still this is not abnormal for ESO given its new model.

Thanks.

I'm conflicted now, I have it ordered from Amazon for $62.99 CDN plus one days shipping and tax. If I buy from PSN it's 62.99, no tax. But I love having physical copies.
I am in the exact same situation as you. I think I'm going to cancel my Amazon order and get it off PSN.

Thanks. Might go digital if that's the case. I mean what's the point of having the disc if it's only one-time use.

If you could make infinite amount of accounts from one disc that would be pretty bad. At least if you cheat, you need to buy new copy.

I'll say it again... "So then when you sell the game you have to give them your accounts name/password linking to your email address? "

If you don't have a CD Key then you don't have to tie the disk to the account. So you give them the disc they login to their own account since it has no subscription fee and start playing. That's what people are asking for.

More like "if you sell the game, you're breaking the games ToS and the account will be banned if they find out that the user changed hands". This is how it works in 99% of mmos people, it's against the ToS to sell your account, the disc is worthless other than making it so you don't have to download as much, the cd key is a one time only deal where it can only be used on a single service account. This isn't new and hasn't been new for over a decade now. Mmo companies aren't suddenly out to get you due to more mmos appearing on consoles, they are just doing what they have done for years at this point.

I'm a little surprised that people didn't expect this(pretty normal for a MMO) but I totally get it. It's just been in practice for so long that I've never even thought about it.

The only reason I can think of the need for it on consoles is expansions. At some point MMOs get expansions meaning a second disc to install new content that usually cost almost as much as the full game. They aren't going to let you sale one of these disc once you're done because you only need one in the drive.

IDK, there is probably a way around that other than requiring all expansions be digital.

Welp, time to take this out of my Gamefly Q.

If they offer a timed trial, I'll try it. But I'm not interested in coughing up $60 without playing it for myself.

Most do at some point. I would be surprised if they didn't. FFXIV has a trial that you can download from the store and then buy a digital licence through the "Mog Station" SE's FFXIV store.

Because it's a subscription game, and the CD Key is your "free one month".

You can sell your disc, but you'll have to buy a sub.
No sub anymore. it's a B2P now.

They already announced DLC will be paid. They have Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild coming as paid DLC (I think unveiling at E3, from memory).

Its mmo, this is not new. It is why games like ff xi and a realm reborn cannot be traded in to GameStop.

MMOs, even disc based ones, are essentially digital games. The disc is only there to install the game.

Deal breaker for me. I won't buy digital (un-resellable) games until they are extremely cheap...at least 50% off. Oh well. I can wait. I have a backlog a mile high.

FF XIV doesn't need the disc, but that's because you can download the client for free from PSN anyway, so you download that and register the key rather than install it from the disc.
