Elder Scrolls Online console versions don't require CDkey, rental and resale possible

Well I expect a lot of backlash from angry uninformed consumers against Redbox, Gamefly and Gamestop. Those stories should be a fun read.

Can't imagine most of those places will stock it. If they had it up before it'll get taken down before launch. Not like Gamefly is letting you put FFXIV in your queue

That's to be expected for an MMO. I mean you still have to make an account I guess and there you have to activate the game. The disc is only good for those who don't want to download the full game over a crappy internet connection or with bandwith cap. Nothing strange or wrong with that.

I'm not sure what some people in this thread expected... Every retail MMO on console has been this way including FFXIV on PS4.

I think Destiny needs PS+ for certain activities (crucible, raids?). I was making the point you don't need a monthly subscription for ESO, you can pick up and play.

Yeah, Destiny single player and open zones weren't ps+.

Did I read the op wrong? There's actually a non-subscription part of the game?

Not sure if this will be true with ESO but with FFXIV I bought a physical copy, installed it, added my PC account info, tried to play it without the disc and couldn't so then deleted the game. Then I went to My Library and it listed FFXIVARR so I downloaded it digitally and didn't need the disc after that.

Now just say that about all of your games and you're on the road to freedom my friend. Shed those physical chains holding you down and soar like an eagle into the digital future.

How many Xbox 360 owners who bought XBLA games, or digital are soaring into the future by not being able to play those games on Xbox One? How many fans of PT are soaring into the future by never being able to dl the game again?

Just wait till the latter half of this gen, when games are pushing 100gb, 2 discs, day one patches above 10gb, etc. Don't know about you, but I don't know if some people can afford 60-100+gb digital downloads either in the bandwidth cap era.

I don't doubt digital is the future, but let's not champion the death of physical, when it's clearly still the best option for console gamers. Used games, quick sales on physical discs etc. When was the last time a game became $39 digitally a month after launch? Retailers routinely slash prices these days.

so did a little research and there is an option monthly sub that will get you all content packs and other stuff, it's in the image small print, so how much is that optional sub?

It's buy to play on PC too. The game never went F2P. Lots of things people say about this game online are wrong as few people actually play it.

To be fair, I played it and didn't enjoy it. I was going to give it another shot if it was F2P but I'll pass on £40.

There was the weird period last gen where games came with unlock keys for multiplayer. So you could technically buy them used, but you couldn't play multiplayer without buying the pass.

I was so happy yet so surprised that publishers saw reason on this. I only expected it to get worst by now and require a passcode to play a game at all, completely eliminating used game sales. I guess that is what MS ultimately tried with XBO at first and it was the wake up call for everyone that we were heading down the wrong path. Though some pubs may have eliminated them even before that.

If you already paid for it you can dive back in, you don't need to buy again. I was more just making a general point that there's a lot of heresay about this game.

I haven't. I played in most of the betas. I'll maybe check it out when it gets a decent sale.

I am completely sold. I played the beta on Xbox One and loved it. Also got the game digital for 20 dollars on Xbox One from being a PC launch player. CANT BEAT THAT!!!

As someone who has played their fair share of MMO's, seems like par for the course. Luckily, I was able to snag this for $20 as I own the pc version.

I didnt think the game was all the great when I played it on pc, but there seems to have been quite a few updates and have a feeling this game will be much better suited on consoles.

Less shock & awe from me and more I hope they make it well known to the uninformed masses.

A label on the package or something.

Got it for $20 digital on ps4. This is pretty common. You are paying for an account. Not the game. You aren't allowed to sell accounts.

It's also worth noting there's a good chance once you've redeemed the code you'll have access to the digital download. It may not be the case, but it's a possibility as I believe FFXIV works that way?

So what's the point of owning the console version if it works just like PC? And what's the point of buying physical? Funny seeing all the defenders of this for ESO when this time 2 years ago people were unified against MS for the very same policy.

UPDATE

A Bethesda representative has told VideoGamer.com that its original forum post was incorrect and that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of The Elder Scrolls Online do not require a CD key to play.

"The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code, as with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification," Bethesda said in a statement this afternoon. "Any previous statements counter to this were incorrect."
