Elder Scrolls Online console versions don't require CDkey, rental and resale possible

You'd be surprised how many people reeeeeeeeeeally don't want to pay for MMOs nowadays.
I think you may be confused here. ESO isn't subscription based anymore, the only thing to need to pay for is the disc/account. Just like with every other MMO out there that has been and gone on console. The fact this is a tipping point for people is a tad funny, not sure what they expected.

Interest killed because you can't find a used copy or rent an MMO game and somehow those things ruined the game for you?

No you didn't.

I did had some interest in this game. I don't see the point in buying this game unless there's a really good digital sale, since buying it physical(my preference) is pointless.

Not Defiance.

And I expected it to work like every other console game I've ever played.

I think he's making the point that there are a number of f2p mmos that people are very happy with.

They can still discount new games. Not as common as finding a used copy, but just keep your eye out on Amazon or Best Buy in a few months.

I you even call these MMO they had CD keys
PSO V1
PSO V2
PSO EP1&2 h
PSO EP3

and these MMO had CD keys
FF11
EQOA
DCUO
FF14

The only console mmo's that didn't were PSU and Defiance

How is this going to work for digital copies with the dual license system used by MS and Sony?

The digital purchase is going to be bound to my gamertag/profile? So a family member will have access to ESO but be unable to log in?

There's literally no need with a console account system like PSN or XBO. Other MP games do not need this. We see this on PC because there is no single unifying account system across all hardware because its not curated the same way. This is one of the bullet points for console is that its disk based, when you get rid of the disk you lose access to the content, negating the need for keys. On PC its a different story. Adding "keys" to a console-based unified online ID (where there can only ever be 1 on each console) where disks ARE the keys is just a money grab, nothing more.

They are securing their money and preventing resale when people realize its a shit game. Simple.

Sort of. Digital versions only get one account creation. Only one person can be signed into account concurrently.

Wait.

So if I buy this digitally, my roomate and I who share the same PS4 are screwed even if we wanted to buy a second copy? You can't install another copy of it, so basically it will only work for the account that bought it and there's no way to allow another account to play it, like Warhawk?

Genius.

Interesting. Has there ever been another console game that you couldn't buy used, or is this a first?

Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast and Gamecube.

Both had a special registration key required that was more or less printed on the back of the manual.

Although the difference was this was strictly for the online mode, Offline was still playable.

Of course since ESO is an MMO the online centric key for PSO still applies in this case I suppose.

Edit: I misread the question. Yeah you could buy them both used, but you probably wouldn't be playing them online due to the key already being used up.

Way it worked for FF14 is my wife and I both had to buy separate copies. There's only one actual install but she has to be logged in as her on the ps4 and if I want to play on the ps4 (I usually play on the PC) I have to switch it over to my account and log back in. I'd imagine this would work the same way.

I've read through that thread on the ESO forums, and the more I think about this, the more I'm leaning toward not buying it.

I'm not opposed to paying for this game twice, but it seems like it'll be a huge pain in the ass for my household. Plus I'll have to buy DLC multiple times, and I fully expect ZOS to give it to us on the chin there.

It seems like a big up-front commitment for a game I might not even stick with.

I mean.. Normally I would have a problem but they need to ensure that every copy is actually paid for since they ditched the sub model.

Or they are just following the trend of almost all MMO's released on console bar two?

Yep, them and all the others that do this are just doing it to follow the trends. MMOs gotta be trendy, y'all.

/s

Rather, I think the trend is what's giving them the balls to put this in here when there's already a perfectly good way to ensure you can't buy the game and give it to a friend... a disc is required.

The reason PC MMOs all have codes is because there's no disc required, and even if there was one, there's no way to prevent people from copying that disc (bluray or DVD) and then passing it on. And because there is no unified user system, so the key also creates your account with that company. On Xbox and PS4, there isn't that problem. You can't copy the disc, and you already have a unique paid user key via XBL/PSN. You're logged in and have the disc in the tray, you can play, you don't and you can't. The only reason to include a code is to stop resale of the game.

And the only reason they feel like they can do that (while other genres like online shooters don't yet dare) is because other games in their genre have done it already, so people will say, "Hey it's an MMO, that's just how they work."

..but they totally don't have to.

Will I need to keep putting the disc in then? I hope not. BestBuy preorder and Gamer's Club Unlocked make the game about $40 day one (after $10 certificate).

wow so if i bought the game my bro and I both can't have our own account? Well thanks bethesda, saved me money. Was really gonna buy this game too but oh well.

To the people here who thought they could file share, most of the time the MMO stuff has almost always been a service locked to the profile name and thats something that was never downloadable, ie PSU for 360 had something go into the account settings, Gundam vs(not an mmo) had a online pass locked to the account which wasnt downloadable and made it so you couldnt file share.

Not sure about the retail version of ffxiv but the digital version is one purchase, one account. my friend can't come over and sign in on my ps3 with his account. I'm assuming the retail copy functions similarly

What did people expect?

Edit: It is a game on a retail disc but it is a "buy to play" MMO. They need to make money with this model from every account. It is like Guild Wars 2. You can't just lend out your disc and have your friend make a separate account and play.

I guess it makes perfect sense, but really they should just include a digital copy with the disk so you don't have to keep it inserted, unless that's already how it works.

Thanks for posting this. I was really on the fence but this info helped a ton. Pass for now, I'll look into it if it ever goes f2p.
