Elder Scrolls Online console versions don't require CDkey, rental and resale possible

Yeah, Gamestop won't buy used copies. I didn't know and tried to sell back lol

I tried to sell them my copy of FFXIV because I figured some people may want to spend a dollar or two to not have to download the entire game. I have no idea how much content is on the actual disc though.

Welp, time to take this out of my Gamefly Q.

If they offer a timed trial, I'll try it. But I'm not interested in coughing up $60 without playing it for myself.

Yeah I was planning on Gamflying it too. Oh well... I will be knee deep in the Witcher anyways so not a big deal I guess.

This is in place because unlike other games this game DOES NOT RUN on PSN or XB Live servers it runs on the developer's servers. It requires an account creation because again.. unlike other games MMO's store all data client side. This also facilitates things like payment for optional services in the game because there IS still a subscription option on the game.

And I think that is the key thing people are missing here. They still have a payment model and structure in place. Its not key to actually playing the game now but its there and that requires an account system. And Destiny is a BAD example because Destiny is NOT an MMO.

For the record I think the game is great and looks fantastic for an MMO - so digital is way to go if you're considering. ~60gb download though.

Opinions and all but this is probably the worst mmo on the market which played a huge part in it failing as a monthly sub mmo. FFXI is still monthly sub 13 years later.

Welcome to that PC Life, C O N S O L E B O Y S

mmo life in general was the same for FFXI and FFXIV on console.

I'll check but if this is the case we should take returns in hell, I mean at gamestop.

There's been an update to the original post on the EOS forums reiterating what the Bethesda spokesperson said.

Hey there everyone,

Thanks for your patience with this and for all of the additional questions. The information in the previous post was incorrect, and we have received further clarification on how the physical edition will work on the consoles.

The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code. As with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification.

Seeing since I bought the PC version of this game at launch and hardly played it because a few friends of mine bailed out, I took advantage of the 20$ offer that Bethesda had going for the digital copy of the game on my Xbox one. Im happy I didn't plunk down 60$ for the game and it has this DRM on it.

MMO or multiplayer, what`s the difference? Would it be ok if EA did this with Titanfall?

MMO generally allow you to create a character from scratch with no gear and no quests or anything completed. If you build up a character and sell the ID key that's called RMT and its largely frowned upon. It was very bad at one point in WoW and FFXI to the point where there were accounts of players who had end game gear and didn't know how to do low level dungeons or even play their class/job. Titan fall you just run around and shoot stuff very bad comparison.

This had nothing to do with selling your account or ID keys.
It was just selling the disc.

Which as we now know is allowed.

Read the question I answered directly please, He was specifically asking the difference between MMO and Multiplayer. If its an on disc free to play mmo then there is absolutely no issues with reselling a disc, I think we agree with each other and you missed it.

Awesome. I was planning on picking up the console version and playing it until they patched gamepad support into the PC version but that non-tradability bit was going to make me just wait it out. Now I can double-dip and sell the console version whenever PC gets patched.

The thread title really needs to be changed.

Maybe a stupid question, but does it still require Live/Plus to play then, or does this situation not matter to that.

Cool either way. I loved the Beta, not planning on selling it down the road anyways. But I'm glad for those who want to rent/sell/trade in the future.

I'd guess it was the backlash (or at least fear of one) that cause them to quickly disseminate across different places that it can be sold used.

So, just to make sure I understand this correctly, the disc version of ESO does NOT function like FF14, where the disc is just for installing the client and doesn't need to be in the drive after that? It's like Defiance/Destiny/any other game where you need to play from the disc every time?

I had been hoping for the former situation; I can get the game for cheaper as a physical disc but for an MMO I don't want to have to actually put in the disc every time.

As per Bethesda (the disc publisher) you need the disc in the console to play. The account is free as long as you own the game, and is linked to your Xbox/PSN account. So you can resell or rent the game no problem - you just lose the game. It's like any other Xbox game, basically.

I'm one of the closed doors console testers, here's my Elder Scrolls account linked to my Xbox Live account:

It's pretty amazing what some people are willing to accept, as long as there's a big company telling them that's the way it's got to be. We saw this on a large scale with the original Xbox One policies.

Or we accepted it because as long time MMO fans we are 100% use to it unlike new console mmo owners.

Closed Door console tester? Anything you can share between the public beta and a later version that you may be playing/testing? I just want to know what improvements have been made from the beta.

Thanks for anything you can say.

This makes the decision to go digital or physical that much more difficult. Any cheap preorders for the game physically? I know of the PS Plus discount over PSN and I'm still leaning to go that route.

There is nothing strange about a MMO game requiring you to activate your account with a code or buy a subscription code to play it. It was a subscription game, now it's not. If it was still a subscription game you would be given a free month code to go along with the installation disk which you can then use as a coaster.

To tell you the truth, them not requiring a code to activate is strange since they will have to make their money off of people buying the game. Maybe they will have fewer content updates or not substantial updates. They could also hold off major updates to sell as expansions instead too.

As it should be. It's super weird to me that even after the 180, people are telling me why I should have been ok with a one time activation. I don't see why console MMOs should be treated differently from any other online game. Destiny and Titanfall didn't require them and Activision and EA don't seem to be going out of business because of it. In fact, both games were huge successes.

Lol. People here thought this was reasonable.

For me it was, but I've been a long time gamer of MMO's since EverQuest days so it wasn't that big of a deal. I understood where console gamers, who traditionally were use to the game being tied to the disc, were coming from and I didn't discredit that opinion. It is good to see they clarified the situation and everyone can enjoy Tamriel for what it is, a great addition to the universe.

We're talking about a mmo not a rpg with multiplayer. The game wasn't designed to be free to play or pay to play. It's now pay to play, but with that I'm guessing there won't be updating it often pretty much turning it into a RPG with Multiplayer. That or sell a ton of horse armor, then give up on it when they can't sell horse armor.

I'm with you, I wanted rpgs to have multiplayer elements like FPS and such, but MMOs are too big for that. A type of RPG that compares is something like White Knight Story where you can play little dungeons with friends, or Dragon Age Inquisition's MP.

Also I have told no one to be ok with anything, just that it's standard for the disk to be pretty much free and the code (the month sub) to be the real purchase for MMORPGs. I'd imagine you can even download FFXIV on PS4 for free, but you'd need to subscribe to play (unless they have a free trial week or 2 with the download.

Thank you to mod for updating subject!

For anybody late to party, the game can be resold and traded - all you need is the game media to play.

If ESO on consoles succeeds, I think it'll be profiting from the Crown Store and DLC much more than the $60 entry cost.

DLC is one aspect of ESO I'm still concerned about. We know ZOS has been holding content back from the PC players. I actually expect a steady stream of DLC starting in July, maybe even in June.

I do think content will be much more substantial than horse armor, though. That's what the Crown Store is for.
