No it's not. Finding less PED use in a sport full of swollen raging men than baseball is tacitly supporting it though.

Edit. This isn't hyperbole either.

I also don't think it's even true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ers_suspended_for_performance-enhancing_drugs

In the last 5 years, MLB has 23 total.

In the last 5 years, only the TOP 7 NFL TEAMS combine for 45:

http://www.cheatsheet.com/sports/no...with-the-most-ped-suspensions.html/?a=viewall

There are many teams with 4 or below too.

In fact, there are 47 total suspensions listed on Wikipedia for the last 10 years of MLB baseball... quick research suggests the NFL easily has topped that in just 5 years.

Where are you guys getting this information from?

The owners are loving that he punished the Patriots - especially for those in the AFC as it provides an easier path to the superbowl - though that love for Goodell will probably disappear very quickly when the next incident occurs that he completely mishandles.

Incident smincident, he's making them more money. I'll repeat, they destroyed the players union during the last CBA, THAT is what matters to the owners.

Um, even most pats fans have accepted they cheated and have moved on to "everyone is doing it " and "they'd have won anyway."

It's time to let it go, like a flaccid pigskin.

I'm sadly a Lions fan, not a Pats apologist. But,the documented gage issue makes this punishment a joke.

Here is the Patriots response to Brady calling JJ:

The Well's report believes that communication as suspicious:

I felt the Patriot's reasoning for that particular communication reasonable.

Sorry, went to Yoga.

I find it laughable. There's 2 weeks to the super bowl. Yet they have to get balls ready right this second @ 7:30am.

Do I think Brady is Satan? Not at all. Do I think their excuses are laughable? Absolutely. There is a middle ground here outside all of the extremists from both sides.

If the Patriots response was "they had to get the balls ready right this second at 7:30am" then I would be 100% in agreement with you.

That isn't their response though. They did have things to talk about regarding preparation for the Super Bowl, yes. But there was also some other reason they might talk... some other topic, perhaps.

Oh, right. An enormous media frenzy about accusations of deflating footballs. That was the other thing that might be a topic of conversation.

The deflator really means trying to lose weight lmao

We are getting into Bill Clinton semantics here.

Depends on how you define deflate!

Ironically, if Bill Clinton had just owned up to it, and moved on from it it would have not been as big of a deal. Very similar to this situation.

So wait, the original report is wrong? Then why is this going on at all?

Roger Joffrey McCarthy Jong-Un Goodell was convinced the Patriots were cheating when the balls measured below spec because he doesn't understand 4th grade science, and would rather spend millions of dollars to commission a bogus report and make a complete mockery of the NFL and himself than admit he was wrong and apologize.

I hope you enjoyed your yoga!

It is not far fetched to think they would talk the next day about the media-frenzy surrounding footballs, especially since it is JJ's job to prepare them. I think the point the patriots are trying to make, is you can't really suggest the phone call was nefarious, as their are other very plausible explanations for the phone calls, without actually listening in on it.

I don't believe that either (at least not that that is all it means), but remember we're talking about inside jokes here. And however odd it may be, we do have an example of them using the word "deflate" for something unrelated to ball pressure... and it looks like it might be a weight joke. Weird but true.

To go into pure speculation mode: I would guess they do use "deflate" as a weight loss joke, but that use of "deflate" is related to other uses of "deflate." In other words, they didn't randomly decide to use "deflate" for weight loss, they use it that way as a joke because it is applicable to them in other ways.

So I do not believe that using "deflate" for weight loss, even if true, would exonerate them from using it for deflating footballs.

However, the guy's job legitimately involves deflating footballs. He deflates them multiple times during preparation before handing them to the officials. And the officials at one time inflated Brady's balls to 16, 2.5 PSI over the maximum limit, which resulted in Brady likely being upset at the preparation guys (another example of the faulty process the NFL uses).

So I conclude that it is unjustified to assume "deflate" refers to illegal deflation below the legal limit. Nobody ever mentioned going below the limit. Their use of the term can be related to their job deflating balls legally, to deflating down to a still-legal pressure, and yes, even to their weight in some cases.

Someone played mortensen like a fiddle with that early misinformation about the level of deflation. It'd be great if he released his source but that will never happen.

Suspension will stand. It shouldn't, the Welles report is a joke and was just a witch hunt, but Goodell already has his mind made up. Otherwise he'd have someone independent looking at the case. Goodell doesn't want his tarnished investigation tarnished.

They already have those texts as they had Jestremski and McNally's phone.

On January 21 and 22, 2015, Renaissance Associates collected from counsel for the Patriots the Patriots- provided mobile phones used by John Jastremski, Brenden Murphy, Zach Struck, Dave Schoenfeld and Berj Najarian. Renaissance created forensic images of the phones for the purpose of extracting data concerning electronic communications made or received using those phones. Unless otherwise indicated, the information about text messages and phone calls presented in this Report consists of data retrieved from Jastremski‟s phone.

While Jastremski was seemingly the link between Brady and McNally, we still don't know whether Brady and McNally communicated directly and if so, what they communicated about.

And in at least one case, the exchange between Jastremski and an unknown person were deleted and could only partially be recovered (p.77):
According to Renaissance, the recipient cannot be identified (and is referenced as recovered-19) because these messages had been deleted, but were still partially recoverable by the forensic tools used to image Jastremski‟s cell phone. Although Renaissance was able to retrieve limited information about certain deleted messages from Jastremski‟s phone, the contact information could not be fully recovered. In addition, Renaissance was unable to determine with certainty when the recovered messages were deleted or whether there were other relevant deleted messages (i.e., deleted messages that left no recoverable information at all).

But I guess it's too late for Brady to hand over his phone anyway. If he had any incriminating texts, they're looong gone by now.

I feel like this whole situation is a good advertisement for snapchat or messaging systems that automatically delete.

It is of nobody's benefit to have all your private correspondence easily tracked and detailed.

Burner phones with kik should be standard for all people.

That sort of presumes a conspiracy would be needed when there's 70 years of established history of the NFL not giving a shit about ball pressure.

All I'm saying is that is the idea that they "definitely" have everything from Brady's phone because they have the other guys phones is incredibly naive.

I'm trying to deflate my weight as well. #iunderstand

Seeing all of this, I fully expect Goodell to reduce his sentence. Because that is the only thing that makes sense given his tenure.

According to the Patriots counsel:

They also had Mr. McNally’s phone records for a period prior to and including the AFC Championship Game. Those records show no texts with Mr. Brady, even in connection with asking for or receiving the three autographs.

The only reason to have Brady's phone would be to see if Brady had communicated to anyone else in the Patriots or outside the organisation about the issue.

.. snip ..

The Pats response does a good job of pointing all of that out, although I think it's weirdly poorly written in some spots and poorly presented (a WordPress blog, really?).

.. snip ..

As a Patriots fan and WordPress developer, I think it's perfectly fine that they use the most popular CMS in the world to serve this :)

This, and the fact the Wells report doesn't mention access to McNally's phone, sounds to me like the Pats organization gave the investigators a copy of McNally's phone records, not the phone itself like they've done with the phones of Jastremski and the four other Pats employees. That raises all kinds of question and gives plenty of reason to be even more doubtful.

Wordpress is fine. The NYTimes and ESPN use it.

There are two services though--self hosted and hosted by WP, which is free.

I meant no offense to the good name of WordPress, I just thought it was a strange choice and the presentation was a little awkward.

I think you're reading too much into it, given that neither the Wells report nor the NFL punishment statement mention being unsatisfied with what was provided while simultaneously detailing all the other ways the Patriots were 'uncooperative'.

Brady's appeal team will call both Goodell and Troy Vincent as witnesses. The NFLPA appeal statement calls for a neutral arbitrator and goes very hard after both Goodell and Vincent. Presumably, this was received prior to Goodell making the decision (or announcing) he would arbitrate.

This could get very ugly. Everything Goodell touches turns to shit.

I don't know if I've ever read more lawyers' words on one subject than I have on this stupid 'scandal'. I'm not sure what that says about me.

I read the complete Well Report including the scientific analysis in the appendix, as well as the Patriot rebuttal. I have completely wasted my time.

If anyone is interested, here is the NFLPA letter to the NFL regarding Brady' suspension and appeal: https://nflpaweb.blob.core.windows.net/media/Default/PDFs/Media Resources/Brady_Appeal_Letter.pdf

The NFL was already a mockery, Tom Brady having balls deflated despite the fact that he is an awesome qb is just really sad and deserves the punishment he got.

I understand it makes 'no difference' but it makes a difference to Brady, it just so happens Brady likes flat balls, and those flat balls fall outside the rules in the rule book, the same rule book he claims to know inside and out when running plays in the playoff

Seems like a catch 22. The balls are only measured once. Put the ball PSI at the low end of the regulation, and they go lower during play on a cold, wet day. Warm them back up or mess with them during the game and the same thing.

So since the NFL didn't give a shit when The Vikings or Panthers intentionally tampered with the balls, and they give a shit when physics tampers with the balls, maybe they should fine physics...

AdamSchefter: Roger Goodell and Patriots owner Robert Kraft already have met, spoke and even hugged, per an industry source who witnessed it.
AdamSchefter: Goodell-Kraft attended Sean McManus’ 60th birthday Sat in NYC; they were spotted “on a couch, talking by themselves for quite a long time."
AdamSchefter: The fact that Goodell and Kraft are on amicable terms could help cool tensions between the two sides and help lead to truce on Deflategate.

Disgusting.
