Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Role playing games especially the Japanese variety are absolutely mired in decades old tropes and antequated game design and most fans of these games are not overly receptive to modernising or dramatically diverting away from these tropes. I cannot stand them.

Things that irk me such as all of these games featuring "magic", turn based battling is the big killer for me personally, random unescapable encounters, dealing with a party, spending half your game time in menus sorting items and crafting potions and all that jazz, oh and the usually cliched to hell and back storylines.

Not all RPG's are like this of course, no, but the majority are. Of course many many people love these games so that is the market and games are tailored to it. Perhaps my problem lies with the title, RPG. I always consider role playing to be a very broad genre, but it seems most games that want to give you vast long storylines in huge worlds tends to be role playing games of the variety I don't like. Shenmue was the first and possibly only game which I felt actually lived up to the RPG name. I played that role, I WAS Ryu! I did mundane stuff, but it was all interactive, nothing turn based, I felt like I was in that world. t was a well designed world too (why the hell are no other role playing games set in the real world, or close to our world, everything is quite esoteric fantasy and nothing much else!). Most RPG's I see look like a spruced up version of Top Trumps or something, it loses all immersion for me dealing with the gamey elements of them.

Rant over.

I wish that projectiles and spammable attacks in fighting games would fucking disappear and die in a ditch somewhere. When i play FGs I want to punch and kick my opponent, not dodge fireballs all day.

I absolutely loathe Motoi Sakuraba's music. I find it to be an echoey smeary mess that meanders randomly and it keeps me from enjoying games that he is attached to.

Case in point, I've only finished one Tales game (Destiny), played like an hour of Valkyrie Profile, played through Star Ocean 2 on mute, finished a couple of hours of Beyond the Beyond (though the game itself had a bit to do with that one), and so forth and so on. Thankfully his presence in Dark Souls was minimal or he was restrained or something.

Assasins Creed 3 is terrible and is the beginning of the downfall for the series. It's 6 hours of tutorials for mechanics that don't matter at all. Why do I need to hunt? What can I even upgrade with hunting materials that matters in the game at all?

Not to mention they broke the stealth that was at least decent in brotherhood and AC2. I couldn't ever get it to work properly. I wanted really bad to love that game too because i love AC2 and Brotherhood and love american revolutionary history, it could have been so much better

If the AAA Machine dried up and blew away tomorrow, I would't care in the least.

The most exciting material in the market today is coming out of mid-tier and smaller production studios.

- Motion controls are amazing when they're properly implemented (e.g. Red Steel 2) and are some of the best input methods for video games imho

- Nintendo handhelds are a joke by any modern technological standard in mobile/handheld. They aren't good handhelds.

- PS Vita is the best handheld ever created for video games, the PS Vita is one of the biggest successes/achievements in terms of handheld entertainment (resolution and CPU/GPU SoC are starting to feel outdated though, but for 2012 tech and for a device with a low RRP, it's good)

- PSP is the second best handheld ever created for video games

- Although I haven't much experience with them, based on the ones that I've played: mobile games are kind of neat

- PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a great brawler

- DmC: Devil May Cry is a great action game

- VR is very interesting

- The constant hyperbole negativity about quite a lot AAA games (or otherwise extreme hype, positivity, no middle ground) is obnoxious on this forum

- I'm looking forward to multiple upcoming 2015/2016 video game film adaptations, including the Angry Birds film ;) (I like CGI animation films generally speaking)

- PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games with Gold are completely over-delivering in value (€50 per year for > 24 games is a heck of a great deal); it's silly to complain about PS+ / GwG line-ups when they're delivering so much value anyway (I agree, it is inconvenient that it's required for online play though, obviously not everyone is interested in the GwG and PS+ games so definitely sucks that it's required for online multiplayer for those people as well)

My opinion of Assassins Creed seems to be a bit controversial.

- Unity was my favourite since Brotherhood.
- I didn't enjoy Black Flag.
- I enjoyed AC3 quite a bit.
- I love the modern day story and miss that it's been gutted.

At least we all agree Revelations was crap.

Werd. Down with turn-based combat. As much as I really want to like some of it, there's just no way I can play those types of games anymore.

Rise of the tomb raider will be a better game than uncharted 4.

In all honesty uncharted is now an overhyped series. Number 2 was good, I won't lie, one of the better games that I've played in some time.

But 3 was garbage, the start of the game was awful, and then it was just full of close combat, a hell of a lot of qte events.

The tomb raider released in 2013 was a MUCH better game than uncharted 3.

I have a feeling that Uncharted 4 will maintain the common theme we seem to be having with ps4 exclusives....

The theme being in case you've missed it is style over substance, most of the exclusives so far have just been focused on how the games look, they've forgotten to add a fun game in there.

So to summarise, fanboys all over the Internet will proclaim uncharted 4 as the the holy grail, as you can see sweat falling from Nate's face, but the core game will be not much fun to play but "omg graphics" but rise of the tomb raider will be a much better core game.

Uncharted 4 is being led by the same people who led on Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us. I can't see any scenario where RotTR is better than Uncharted 4 for that reason alone.

In terms of story? Yeah sure. Tomb raiders story was laughable, doesn't compare to any naughty dog game,

In terms of core game uncharted and last of us aren't all that.

"Oh yeah them ladder and wooden crates were so good" in last of us lol. Seriously how many times did you have to move a ladder or carry Ellie along on a crate.

Naughty Dog are probably one of the most over rated developers in recent times. Yes their production values in recent times are very good, however the core games are nowhere near being what some people say. It's ok though their pedestal that people put them on won't last forever.

Don't get me wrong I downloaded last of us on the ps4 and played through it and left behind fully. I enjoyed them, but they were nowhere near "oh my god the most incredible experience I've ever had in my life" that some people try and portray.

The story was good for a video game, but there's not much competition is there? Use that same story for a TV show and it's not anything we haven't seen before.

Ultimately though it's all subjective, my opinion isn't wrong, it can't be as its my opinion, the same way yours can't be wrong. Some people love bloodborne, they proclaim it the second coming of Christ, I'm not religious, and bloodborne was about as enjoyable for me as I'd imagine banging 5inch nails into my eyeballs would be. But it's my opinion. And if I had bought a ps4 exclusively for bloodborne as some people seemingly have I'd have sold the ps4 already....

I LOVE the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. And I really enjoy the mythology of that world. Lightning is my favorite FF protagonist since Terra.

Assassin's Creed Unity was the best one since 2, brotherhood and black flag suck noodles and are the worst in the mainline series to me. Didn't play revelations.

Edit: oh and LA Noire is one of the best games ever made.

People over rate how much the old sonic s were about speed. Sonic was always about percision platforming.

Sega's successes in the 90s was only due to marketing. Their games weren't nearly as good s what the SNES offered, which represented the peak of Japanese design ( the PlayStation also).

About as many times as you had to cross a ledge using a rope and then the rope would cut halfway through crossing in Tomb Raider.

Or the times you had to run forward while something was exploding/crumbling down in Tomb Raider.

Or the times Lara got super super hurt and cries but you know nothing's gonna happen to her since she needs to survive the game in Tomb Raider.

Both Skyrim and Morrowind have an impressive open world, but overall, the games are very bland, generic and boring. The characters and story are uninteresting and the combat is a mess.

Witcher 3 is better in every aspect IMO.

Well, seems like you're hoping that will happen some day. But it won't. Simply a great studio, run by the right people.

But it is. As you can see by all these fans that are saying this, the sales numbers, the critics, GOTY awards, etc. etc.
It just.... that you have a different opinion. Welp, can't please them all.
That's it.

I don't want to berate your controversial opinion... but that's not a controversial opinion at all :p

Skyrim is like Minecraft, if you think about it. The game in itself is nothing to write about. The combat is serviceable at best, the story is... well, again, serviceable at best. It's the scale of the world, so vast and "alive", what makes it so appealing. And, most importantly, the player can use that world as a massive sandbox where they can craft their own adventures. And if you include mods, then you get the perfect "platform" or "engine" for such a big community to bloom.

Not sure how controversial this is, but GTA V plays like shit and Bethesda's game design is insultingly bad.

Truth.

I'll add Red Dead Redemption isn't that good except the setting. I thought it was just the controls being a bit clunky that put off my enjoyment but playing it again recently, it's just not very fun and one gun fight is the same as the last, side missions shake things up briefly but there isn't much to them once you've done a few and the mundane tasks, yeah a few times is enough.

I guess I don't really understand the popularity of the PS4 and why a large majority of GAF continue to defend it so much with its lack of exclusives and first party output yet largely crapped on the Wii U for not having games in its first year or two. To me, it feels like the Wii U has the best lineup by far even if it doesn't match the quantity.

I suppose it depends on what you buy a console for. I buy them for first party output. I don't really care much for most third party developers. Most big third party games are just overrated to me.

The difference is no one has said how tomb raider was the greatest "game" ever created.

As a game, I.e the actual gameplay elements last of us does not stand out, it's simply the story which has helped gain it the praise it received. And outside of the gaming industry the story is cliche and pretty generic.

That's my point. Yes in every game the mechanics are repeated, you could simplify every game out there the way you have. Every game in its simplest form is simply repeating the same thing over and over again. I could simplify the last of us enemy types, I mean look how many different types of infected there are lol. The same types over and over again

The point was last of us was hailed as redefining genres, being the ultimate experience, the best thing ever, etc etc and it's nowhere near any of those things.

The Last of Us is incredibly overrated. If it weren't for the story, it would just be another PS exclusive.

Yes, I've played it.
If it weren't for the good thing it wouldn't be good.

.

No one stays on top forever unfortunately, no matter how good they are.

Things change. So many brands/companies/manufacturers today for example that are at the high end of the scale have not always been there, and they won't be there forever,

Remember how popular Sony TVs were? Different story today. Are you old enough to remember when Apple was an obscure brand that no one gave a shit about?

You remember how relevant Konami and Capcom were. What about Rare? Rare at their time were at the top of their game, like seriously top, now look....

I don't understand the appeal of Halo or Gears. They both seem like generic sci-fi shooters. I couldn't get into Persona 3, I've tried several times. I like City Folk more than New Leaf. I thought Tony Hawk Underground 2 was alright.

*inhales deeply*

While the majority might be toxic, I do think (hope?) there are individuals in GamerGate who are simply concerned with transparency and honesty in game journalism and not interested in harrassing Anita Sarkeesian or Zoe Quinn.

Halo 2 is the weakest Halo. It doesn't hold up well, at all. It doesn't have an insanely fun weapon to save it (like CE's pistol), the story is weak / barely there, and largely involves you turning around and doing the same stage in reverse. Halo 3 absolutely puts it to shame in terms of 'fun', Halo 4 is more tight and the story is far, far better than 2. This is coming from someone who's only really played Halo through the Master Chief Collection.

3 > 4 > 1 > 2.

If it came out today, it wouldn't be looked at any more fondly than say, Killzone: Shadow Fall.
