Roland was awesome. Shame that they didn't do more with him. The third act of that movie is so bad. Roland could have like joined up with Malcolm's side or something but they just ended his "arc" with him tranquing the rex and you never hear from him again. As shit as the San Diego crap was, I think it would have been better if he were involved. Then again nothing about the script was thought out very well.

I mean how badass would it have been if they got the rex on the boat, but didn't know jack shit about firing a tranquilizer gun, then Roland shows up to deliver the shot instead of Sarah.

The first 2/3 of The Lost World aren't too bad, although nowhere near the quality of the first. If they got rid of the mainland stuff and the whole forced father/daughter crap it would be infinitely improved.

Yeah, I completely agree. And get rid of Vince Vaughan too. It's an enjoyable enough film, but pretty shite compared to the original.

While I have zero hope of this surpassing the original, I've never expected that. I'm just hoping for a fun popcorn thriller with dinosaurs. From the trailers, I feel it could go either way. Interested to see how professional reviews come down.

I saw The Lost World on TV yesterday. Specifically the part where the raptors are chasing Malcolm, Moore and that little girl around. The raptors looked really bad. Actual bad though. Not Jurassic World "bad"

I'm beyond excited but it's not like I'm naive enough to expect it to top a movie I've been in love with for 22 years. I mean come on. Nothing about that is even remotely fair. I hope Jurassic World is a great Jurassic Park movie, but it doesn't have to "beat" the original to do that.

I think they look fine, but there's... other things about that sequence that distract me from it, admittedly.

To be fair, CGI almost never looks good in still images.

Yeah, that is true, but as mentioned I associate charm with being like a dismissive thing. To me it indicates lower expectations, but that's due to my personal interpretation of it obviously.

well, unlike The Lost World it at least looks lit enuogh to see them lol

I never think charm is a bad thing. charm is one of the hardest things to pull off right in thsi day and age. Jurassic Park ozzed charm out of every dino crevice. Chris Pratt should hopefully bring back some of that charm. so theres that.

I just rewatched the raptor scene to check out the raptor CG. I think it's great, but that Kelly scene just gets worse every time I see it. Even the score is lazy, repeating that DUN DUN DUN DUNNNN part after the kick that plays just before it.

You know what might be dumber than the kick? I mean, it's not but it's still pretty dumb. It's when Sarah slips off the roof, crawls past the fighting raptors (because you know they're smart and would rather fight each other than stalk prey for food), then crashes through a series of walls and windows and rolls down a chute which conveniently pours her outside right where Malcolm is to be intercepted because he knew that's where she'd dispense out like a fucking gumball machine.

edit: nah it might actually be dumber than the kick

Any of the "raptors at night" shots from JW remind me of TLW.

I never understood the hate Lost World got. I LOVEd the movie as a kid. Had the best theme song:

Brandon posted a good critique on the prior page. I remember when I was a kid and TLW came out--I read every review I could come across. I didn't quite understand what it meant to have a "bad script" back then--I devoured/loved the movie regardless--but watching it now is a completely different experience.

I dunno if it's anywhere near as iconic as the amazing JP Theme, but I'll say this, after putting some time aside and listening to them both back to back, I got to say, I prefer TLW's score over JP.

TLW for Lyfe.

Even when I was younger I always felt there was something off about TLW. Remember seeing it in a theater and not being as in wonder about it. Still wouldn't say I hate it though. Don't hate any of the JP films. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Though obviously JP1 is still king.

This thread is keep surprising me. TLW music over Jurrasic Park? I mean come on.

I caught part of Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park 3 on AMC (I think) this weekend. Seeing bits of both of them (I have the entirety of the first film burned into my memory anyways) so close to each other just drove home how sub par the third film was. I would LOVE if Jurassic World was a good movie.

lol, I always thought the scene had a fun rhythm to it at least

Hate is a strong word. I've seen much worse than TLW. My problems with it simply stem from the fact that I believe that it was just the wrong tone and story for a sequel, and it is filled with a truckload of stupidity. I can sit through it and enjoy some of it. Plus I just dig dinosaurs. I still feel as though JP3 is the more innocent sequel. I prefer Grant as a protagonist, I mostly liked his story, Eric wasn't a stupid or annoying kid, and the parents while "annoying" were at least realistically so. I think Paul is mostly funny and likable. Amanda is the least likable but I think she gets better and tougher as it goes. She's obnoxious in a soccer mom kind of way but that's intentional.

It's also very short and it has its share of misdemeanors like the talking raptor but hey, at least it was a dream! It had no business being there, but it doesn't really ruin anything for me. If anything it's a part where watching it with friends and beer leads to some laughs. Aside from the trailer scene I think it has better action than the second one too. The whole raptor chase out of the embryonic lab ending with the raptors using the guy as bait was pretty fucking cool and I love the entirety of the pteranodon sequence. Billy flying around could be seen as comical to some, but I think it harkens back to that more care-free style of adventurous heroics.

I think both sequels fail to do a lot of justice to the original, but at least the third movie is fast and, IMO, less offensively stupid than aspects of the second. It's just more fun, quick, and vibrant. Nicer to look at too, to me. I guess I should also mention that I'd rather have the search and rescue story led by an annoying but realistic! family than a search and rescue story that leads to a story about a shitload of dumbasses and very unrealistic group of supposedly intelligent people trying to take dinosaurs to California.

My man. Exactly how I feel.

I wish I could track down the interview where Spielberg confessed that he felt enervated or worn out during the filming of TLW. He wasn't enthused, I think. I know I saw this but I can't seem to track it down.

Anyway, this film's opening is spectacular ("I found something") as is the match cut from screams of horror to Ian Malcolm's yawning maw.

As for JPIII, I can't stand the way Sam Neill delivers the line, "We probably won't get off this island alive." From what I recall, it's vaguely sinister and mocking? Also, the camera pushes in as he's saying this and the effect is just curious. I feel awful saying that because Neill is superb and Alan Grant was like a hero to me when I was a young lad. He's great in the original, but something went amiss during that bit in JPIII.

I'm curious if JW will refer to the events of JPIII at all.

This right here is my concern over Jurassic World.

This is CGI from '97 and it looks leagues better than anything I've seen from Jurassic World.

I'm shocked more people haven't mentioned this. My first reaction to the trailer was "are they using the same animation from the first film?"

Edit: Regarding the post above me... That doesn't look very good.

Was this sarcastic? The screens you posted all look mostly horrible. In no way would I consider the movie looking amazing from these. Better than JP? sure, but thats a 20+ year old bar to try hitting. It had the benefit of something new and used CG very conservatively along with lots of tricks to mask it. This just looks in your face and CG, which is what we all have problems with..
I think you guys should schedule an appointment with your ophthalmologist ASAP.

Someone who supposedly saw it posted this on IMDB. Take it with salt obviously but the way it reads doesn't strike me personally as someone begging for attention:

Most scenes that some thought looked lackluster in the trailers were drastically altered in the final cut. That said, there will STILL be people who prefer the look of some of the more famous sequences from the 1993 film and that's because the majority of the big effect sequences in Jurassic World take place in daylight with no rain or shadows to hide the dinosaurs. Some might also take issue with the color grading and blue hues of the cinematography. That said, those worried that it falls into the Peter Jackson trap of having tons of random CGI creatures rampaging in and out of green screens can breath a sigh of relief. Every FX shot is carefully framed and timed and they do a spectacular job building the suspense by revealing dinosaurs very slowly before going into full-on rampage mode. The pacing of the dinosaur shots is very similar to the 1993 film. Less is more until the 3rd act. Ohh and the rumor about there being only one animatronic is blatantly false.

Yeah, there's nothing specific or detailed enough in there to read like an attention seeker

Sounds legit, and very positive if true

Edit: Brandon, you should also post the other comment that IMDB user said, regarding set pieces

Why is "The lost world" hated? At the time i liked it, now i know it has problems but still its an ok movie, paying tribute to King Kong and all .

Well, I just explained why I don't like it... if you care about what I think. If you don't, that's okay too :p

I think the characters stuff is ultimately why I prefer III. You have the dumbass parents fearful for their son, and the rookie paleontologist who does something stupid for prestige.

I find them far more understandable and likable than the eco-terrorists of TLW, who I just don't care about at all, and wouldn't mind them dying. I also find their "stupid mistake to move the plot forward" a lot more understandable than highly educated and wildlife-focused scientists doing derpy things like not considering how blood might attract predators.

I also think stuff like the aviary and the river ride with the Peter Pan global phone are more interesting sequences than everything that's in Jurassic Park save San Diego, which is enjoyable in a popcorn way but doesn't do much for me in terms of salvaging the rest of the film.

Let's hang our blood-drenched clothing out to dry in a jungle full of dinosaurs, particularly two adult Tyrannosaurs that are tracking us because we pissed them off by injuring their baby. Especially with our daughter with us.

The dumbest characters.
