It's fascinating in a way how BioWare makes worse and worse games, yet they make more and more money.

Each Mass Effect game had better combat than the one before it. Seems pretty intuitive that improving gameplay would result in improving sales.

Only console warriors give a shit about Killzone or Gears of War. And they're only pretending to care.

As a PC centric dude, Gears1 on X360 was the bees knees. No third person shooter came close on PC, or any other platform for that matter. The weapons were all ridiculously satisfying, and the game was just great fun online.

Yep, also, killzone mercenary on vita is just really good in mp/bots (with a grip) and has a decent story mode.

While premature, I would say that my controversial opinion (as I can tell just by reading this thread) is that Splatoon is the best game out this year but not for the usual reasoning one might apply to it like a meta score or hype factor or graphics or story. There are some very solid games out now for 2015, games much better rated, better looking, and better written than Splatoon by a wide shot, but they are largely what I would call as safe, aimed products, while Splatoon is an experiment.

The feel and impact, polish, sound design, and gameplay (and subjective fun) of it are simply unrivaled by current offerings, and as such even if the game is light on content, it is the better game. It is a game that I have found myself thinking about in the off-times, planning and plotting, and that's not something many games can make you do. The last game (that isn't Terra Battle) to wurm its way into my head like this was Dark Souls (Bayo/Bayo2 and now Witcher 3 (as it is the first Witcher game that I have found myself actually playing beyond the intro) are close but not quite there for me, and before that it was Halo and the Halo universe). Mechanics and feel are what make a game great to me (as well as being fun, obviously) and Splatoon offers that in spades (just the nuance of your ammo is you stealth is your sprint, has "wow"-ed me) as well as adding some color, life, and personality to my game time.

Its a game that sticks to you... like ink.

I haven't had this much fun with a shooter since the heydays of Halo with friends.

My controversial opinion:

I truly believe that iOS has a more robust library of games than PS Vita, and I don't think we are far away from it having a library that stands equal with 3DS.

With a MFI controller the ipad/iPhone have access to heaps of PC ports, as well as their own native games. The games look and run better on iOS and more and more developers are implementing MFI control schemes into their games.

A few of the gems:

BioShock
Bastion
Final Fantasy 3-4-5-6
Geometry Wars 3
GTA: San Andreas / Vice City / 3
Halo Spartan Assault/Strike
Jet Set radio
Limbo
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Oddworld Stangers Wrath
OceanHorn
Republique
Space Marshals
Star Wars: KOTOR
Terraria
Heaps of TellTale Games
Valiant Hearts
Wayward Souls

^ that is just a small list of the games available and there is only more being added each week. Better still the iOS version of these games are considerably cheaper than their Vita counter-part. Sorry guys I have a vita and I like it, but you cannot deny iOS is becoming a serious contender to stand next to the 3DS

Oh and if 3DS games ever make their way to iOS via DENA then it serves only to help iOS even more.

Buy a MFI controller and welcome yourself to the future.

Nah, my phone is important, I need the battery. I'm not going to carry around a controller and some coat hangers for a quick game of tetris either.

But it's nice that it's getting those games despite the lack of inputs by default for those that want to dabble with that.

Not even going to bother with the 3DS library claims.

I generally judge libraries by exclusives/best versions, which would gut that list, but in a desert island scenario I don't think this is tooooooo crazy.

Every game on that list that I recognize (which is like 14/18) is elsewhere with better controls, and without the need to kill the battery on your phone or carry around a random dualshock or something. If the Vita gets shit for ports, I think your list is pretty funny.

I really dunno where you're coming from, unfortunately.

I love iOS gaming, but nah, my iPhone can't touch my 3DS. It's a nice sidekick to it, though! And it does have some of my favorite games.

I think the controls are on par with consoles because the MFI controllers are ripoff 360 controller designs. The battery argument I don't think holds true, my OLED vita runs for about 4-5 hours before going flat. The iPad/iPhone will do at least 8 hours continuous playback and still have charge left. As iphone charge cables are so cheap it's not uncommon to have multiples and leave one in my computer and another in my laptop bag. Vita charge cable on the other hand is not so common so I only have the 1.

I didn't list iOS exclusive games because people are unaware of those titles, but there are HEAPS and they aren't just the F2P garbage that is so prevalent on the app store.

3DS is my favourite handheld at the moment, but I know that when Nintendo release their next handheld it will take ages until the library is fleshed out and robust. iOS (like steam) doesn't really have this problem because the ecosystem is forever updating hardware whilst maintaining the software it once supported.

iPad was launched in 2010, 3DS in March of 2011

iOS has cultivated an incredible library in that time as has 3DS. When Nintendo reset the clock on their next handheld and launch it it will be a tough sell in comparison to what is available on iOS.

The Witcher III is the ugliest critically acclaimed, AAA game released in the last year or two. Blech.

Heroes of the Storm isn't just a "Baby MOBA" it's dull, ugly and cynical. The worst thing Blizzard has made.

The Uncharted HD-er collection will actually dampen the series' legacy, particularly with the fourth right around the corner. Technical showpieces dated a year or two after release, even 2 which is the least offensive of the three.

Rosalina should not be in Super Smash Bros.

Arkham Knight is very likely going to suck. (still buying it lol)

I hope we never see another 2D Metroid again.

Oh, and let's keep it real: Anyone here who has complained about Driveclub PS+ Edition's delay is upset not because they are genuinely interested in playing a new simcade racing game, but simply because they want to ogle the graphics.

I like Link's design but I've never been able to get into the Zelda games.
MGS4 is the best MGS.
More modern fighters should be 2D.
Current gen consoles are too weak.

I would have been fine playing last gen consoles for more 10 years if they still got support. Couldn't care less if a console is weak or powerful, as long as it has good games.

The only thing I can think of is that I think Super Metroid is pretty okay.

Not bad or anything, by any means, but it just never clicked for me. Honestly, it's a game I really wish I liked more, given all the praise for it. The way Samus moves, especially her floaty jump, is something I really struggled with. Even by the end of the game, the movement in particular felt really awkward. The bosses, the terrain, the overall level design in general are great. It's just the game feel that doesn't work for me.

It's one of those I respect more than I enjoy playing. Maybe I just need to play through it again.

-Half-Life 2 is the most disappointing game I have ever played. I loved the first game but hated the second. Hated the story, hated the combat.

-I really like the Mario Party games.

As someone who generalyl owns both consoles and a gaming PC, Gears definitely matters. It's one of the best TPS's. Now Killzone, yeah I don't understand how people care about that. That's a whole other league of mediocre. Unless we're talking about the vita one and the PSP one.

The controversy here depends on which ones you like :p

I don't think this is entirely true. Gears is legitimately fantastic. And while some people only care about Killzone for console warz, I do think there are a good number of people (like myself) who care because we see a neat world and lore and would like to actually see the games reach their potential.

Shadow of the Colossus is an atrocious game. The controls are horrible and there's no point to what you're doing. Just go here, kill that, repeat. I have no clue why people are so excited for the Last Guardian.

I hate everything Bethesda does. They're not bad games, I just do not enjoy that style. And this makes me sad because Fallout 4 being in Boston is the shit, and I know I'll never be able to enjoy it.

I can see a lot of people on GAF hating Bethesda-style games but don't worry, I think almost every gamer feels the same about one of the "big" developers. For me, it's Naughty Dog. Those games are damn near unplayable for me.

Witcher 3 is a 7/10 or 8/10 game, yet its still the best open world RPG of at least the last decade. That just highlights how far behind focused (C)RPGs open world still RPGs are.

Preach. Nothing Bethesda Game Studios have done since Morrowind has been above average, and Morrowind is dated... Badly.

It's more an experience than a game, imo. If you don't dig that then I can see how the sometimes awkward mechanics and lack of more traditionally "fun" gameplay might put you off.

Behind what?

In the last 12 months, I'd put both Pillars of Eternity & Shadowrun Dragonfall ahead of Witcher 3 in terms of world immersion, storytelling, and even gameplay. Going back even further, I don't see Witcher 3 as a title that can stack up with the greatest RPGs (mine are PS:T from the west & FF6 from the east).

But, like I said, as an open world RPG? Witcher 3 is absolutely amazing. It destroys anything Bethesda has done. I just feel that bar for a great open world RPG is lower than the standard of other RPG subgenres (I mean Skyrim scored a 9.4 average for gods sake).

Really dislike Super Mario 3D Land. Its like some weird hybrid of the 2D and 3D Marios while not being as good as either.

Dragonfall has great storytelling, Pillars does not.

i don't know if this is controversial or not but just my general observation

for a game as highly touted as witcher 3, you legit have to fight the controls just to move around.

Having a different lead for each game was the smartest decision Bioware made with Dragon Age, despite how attached people were to their Wardens and how bad the writing for Hawke was. Mass Effect suffered for having to follow Shepard through three games. 2 could've had Kai Leng as a lead and, given their expressed desire to get new people on board with 3, making Vega a player character would have made total sense.

How did it suffer?

MGS3 made me quit the series, after fantastic MGS2 I was waiting for a worthy evolution of the gameplay and camera fit for the jungle enviroments. Instead the same camera was tacked-on on open enviroment, making the game unplayable and frustrating to me.

The Boss was also boring, angsty and boring again and you could see her twist coming.

I'm enjoying my time with Splatoon, but for a game that gets so much love here on GAF it has way too many flaws. Out the top of my head:

- just a handful of maps that get old quickly
- even fewer game modes
- very mediocre map rotations, just two at a time
- annoying news updates you can't skip
- locking content behind amiibos
- connection can get pretty bad (not because of my internet)
- not being able to change your load-out without exiting a game entirely

And I'm pretty sure I can come up with more. I suppose the solid, fun and quick gameplay rarely gets boring, I've been playing for 25+ hours so that's a very big pro, but I personally wouldn't give it more than a 7.

I think people are just euphoric Nintendo gave us something to itch our shooting cravings, but the game itself has a lot of improvements to be done. I hope and expect these issues to be straightened out in Splatoon 2, which I'm fairly certain is going to happen since Splatoon sells pretty well.

Half Life 3 is going to win GOTY 2015.

Dota2 deserved GOTY 2013 over A Link Between Worlds and The Last of Us. Hell... All of these...

goty1.png

Are wrong.

2014: Bayonetta 2
2013: Dota 2
2012: Hotline Miami/FTL/Crusader Kings II
2011: Dark Souls
2010: Super Mario Galaxy 2
2009: Arkham Asylum (although UC2 is still a good pick, to be fair).

I feel that people who "love" Bravely Default do so out of principle and nostalgia more than anything else.

"It's like the old Final Fantasy before FFVII ruined it! Pure fantasy! No sci-fi BS! Cute chibi character designs and classic FF art style!" etc.

I beat the demo and played about 3 hours of the actual game (borrowed it) before I gave up because I was so frickin bored.

*Anecdotal evidence warning*

About ten of my gamer coworkers purchased the game, but only about two of them actually beat it (and one of those two ended up loathing it). It seems there is a specific point in the game that makes them realize the game isn't actually very good and end up getting stuck, with zero motivation to keep going. This inevitably leads to conversations like these:

"Oh hey so, how about that Bravely Default? Did you ever beat it?"
"Um, no..."
"Oh? How come? You seemed extremely hyped at the time it was released."
"Oh, well, I haven't had time to be honest. Work and family and stuff, you know. But I love the game for sure! Classic Square, man!"

Of course, I don't mention that I've seen him/her dumping countless hours on the newest whatever is popular on Steam at the time, instead of playing this average game they supposedly LOVESOHYPEDCLAASICSQUARECUTEARTSTYLE.

I liked SotC, but it was due in huge part to the atmosphere and soundtrack.

Ico, however, I didn't care for. One long and dull escort mission with janky controls and combat, and the 50% of the game is just the other half mirrored with slightly different puzzles. I'm struggling to remember much else about it.

Dota2 deserved GOTY 2013

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the reason that will never happen is the same reason CS:GO could never win, and many other games beside.

It is extremely lacking in content. It has one map. There are many character to choose from, and there are many items to buy, but it completely lacks narrative. It is a competitive game that offers nothing beyond that. It is devoid of the reasons each of those games won instead.

I think people give way too much of a shit about games being exclusive to their console of choice, to the point where some of these threads seem very hostile and fececious, why wouldn't you want other people to be able to experience a franchise? See the original ds3 thread where it was rumored to be at E3.
