Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

They must be ports? Emulating the tri core PowerPC Xenon with all its eccentricities would be no easy task even on the highest end PC hardware, probably wouldn't even be playable.

It sounded like it downloads the ported version of the game when it reads the disc.

I just heard them say that retail discs will work too. I wish Sony would do something like that if you put a PS3 disc into PS4, let you stream it from PSNow for free or something like that. But I'm just hoping Sony is going do PS1 and PS2 BC now.

Wow, did not see that coming but it's a brilliant move!

Sony, you have to scrap your shitty streaming service and follow suit now (this coming from one of your loyal customers)

The streaming service isn't a solution for BC, it's designed for people that don't own the console (think forward, just like every device has netflix on it, the dream would be to have every device have ps1/2/3 on it).

We'll never get ps3 native anytime soon, so i agree, this is a big deal for MS for those that want BC but don't have a 360.

for a 360 disc designed to work on one archittecture it needs an emulator and cannot run natively, any game designer will tell you that. only a recompile will make it work natively and that too only downloads not existing 360 discs

This is game streaming like ps now. Did no one catch the "thanks to the power of xboxlive" line? Still its fucking awesome that you don't have to rebuy games

Games needing to be installed is going to hog up the HDD space real quick.

I have no real use for PS Now but at least it doesn't force you to sit there for hours downloading a game to your HDD that you'll need to delete at some point.

PS4 should offer this feature since a massive number of 360 mains switched sides this generation.

I have an Xbone now for exclusives only but still :)

No way that the Jaguar processor can emulate cell. Naughty Dog said that when they first ported over The Last of Us as per the PS3 version they were getting about 10fps.

I would love to believe that all titles will be supported, but that seems really unlikely.

Microsoft did something similar with OG Xbox on 360. I don't have a faith that they will do it properly this time either.

If it is real and I can take any 360 game (including ones that sold like 15 copies), this is great and I am very impressed and will be happy to be wrong.

Much more likely, this will cover many popular titles, but not actually cover everything.

100 titles this holiday.

Will the XB1 use it's hardware scaler to boost the 360 resolution?

Also - will the XB1 hardware provide better framerates and/or any new DX features to improve the older titles? (like different types of AA or AS?)

Or will the 360 games play as-is, the way they originally were designed.

This SHOULD be a huge boost of sales, SHOULD

It will help a little, more from a salesman perspective, but BC is extremely overstated feature. Sure some people will love it, but few will actually use it for any meaningful amount of time.

Edit: but cool that they are doing for those that will get use of it.

I'm pretty sure this uses streaming. If it's legit BC then that confirms that I know as little as I thought.

My thoughts exactly, emulating the triple core PPC with all its weird customness would still be super hard on the highest end PC hardware, so far as I understand...These must be ports, I'm thinking, same assets, but reworked for x86/the Jaguar cores.

So happy for this! I can't wait to give it a preview.

Lack of backwards compatibility has been my biggest complaint about Xbox One and PS4.

This is what should have happened when Xbox 1 Launched. They would have had a better time out the gate. Xbox faithful would have stayed loyal to their current eco system...but instead....with no BC, you wipe the slate clean, so then Naturally, Xbox faithful had the choice to switch to PS4.

Major Nelson says all third parties need to do is say "ok" and the game is up.

Sounds like how making digital versions worked on the 360. The publishers just had to do some submission paperwork to put it up. No extra development needed.

This isn't "native" BC for disc owners since you have to download the digital version from MS servers. As far as I can tell any game without a digital version won't be playable. That leaves out a decent chunk of my collection.

Guess my 360 will stay hooked up then, nice try MS.

EDIT: Also what are they going to do about DLC?

No one knows this yet.

It was a very general announced.
