Trying to remain as unbiased as possible.

I feel like the fact that Shenmue needed a kickstarter is really dumb. I mean Sony will take all the glory of announcing the game but won't chip in 2m to fund it? Sony's thrown far more money at far less deserving titles, so why couldn't they help fund this one? Part of me thinks that the Kickstarter is a PR stunt, but part of me fears that Sony just wants to reap the rewards of the game without having to invest anything into it, and that this kind of thing will become the norm. For everyone's sake I hope that's not the case.

Not a FF fan (Haven't played any) but I can't think of a single game that I would say justifies the massive reaction to remaking FF got. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but remakes really don't excite me. I suppose that the FF7 remake was a long-time coming but with no release date it could still have quite a ways to go before it's actually out.

Last Guardian was practically a meme at this point. It's been in the incubator for 6 years and seeing it again it looks the exact same as it did 6 years ago. Sorry for being so negative, but what were they doing in those 6 years? They've been working on this game for 6 years since we last saw it, and very little has changed. Well at least it still looks as charming as it did back then. The trailer was far too slow-paced for my tastes though. Will have to see how the final game actually turns out.

The run time was a lot shorter then I expected, and it was fairly well-paced too, although I feel like it was extremely front-loaded as there wasn't much hype at the end besides the UC4 demo, which although definitely looks good, is still Uncharted so nothing really ground-breaking gameplay-wise there. It feels like Sony really got the better end of the Third-Party stick at this conference, with a fairly solid Battlefront gameplay trailer, and dare I say the most full-featured Cod reveal yet considering most E3 Cod reveals only show Single-Player and this featured Multiplayer. Unfortunately, it meant we also had to sit through thoroughly unexciting Destiny DLC and Disney Infinity reveals. Also I was gone for it but I heard there was an extremely snooze-worthy Playstation Netflix part too that no one seems to be bringing up.

Horizons actually looked pretty good, although the gameplay was losing me at the end. Of course, The Order 1886 LOOKED good as well, so you can never tell these days. No Man's Sky's greatness will be determined by how diverse each world is, in my opinion. The fact that there are pretty much infinite planets to explore doesn't mean much if they all look like the same 10 planets, which is what I fear. If every desert planet, every rainforest planet, and every grassy meadow planet feel the same, then it really kills the drive to explore if you know that no matter where you go it's going to feel exactly the same as someplace you've already been to. Of course, there's no way to know until the game is launched, so it's a bit early to ask these questions.

Overall the best conference so far IMO, but I could totally see Nintendo defending it's title this year if they can pull some big reveals. Nintendo already has a jump-start thanks to their hype as hell Nintendo World Championships they did yesterday. And if they have anything good to showcase, the Nintendo Treehouse stream should be amazing this year as well. That being said, I think Sony deserves a 8.5-9

I can't imagine what Nintendo could announce that would rival any of this, to be honest. And if you haven't played a game before, then of course you can't understand the reaction at the FFVII announcement. Not sure what you expected.

10/10 conference easily. Holy shit, I can't believe all that happened in the span of an hour and a half. It might just be the best E3 conference I've seen.

- The Last Guardian reintroduction and gameplay demo.
- Horizon looked incredible and the concept (both story and gameplay-wise) were really interesting.
- Final Fantasy VII Remake directed by Nomura and still written by Nojima.
- Shenmue III announced against all odds.
- That Uncharted 4 gameplay looked pretty damn good, was funny as hell and the whole sequence was masterfully done. They're getting much better at masking the scripted parts.

It was so nuts that Street Fighter V was pushed to the wayside.

Man the excitement around FFVII terrifies me for the future of this industry. Its a 20 year old game, getting new graphics and the internet is exploding. Why make new games when all anyone wants is literally the same games over and over with new graphics?
You forget that the need for ff7 remake wasn't as desired until square themselves made that tech demo for the PS3, and then they said they would never make it, we would never play it... So blame square.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned but remakes really don't excite me.

Can't be because you're old fashioned, because you have to be old fashioned in order to be someone that cares about old things enough in the first place to then care that they're being revisited in some way. I'm old fashioned and it was a megaton "I can't believe it's happening" moment for me. FF7's not even my favorite FF, but if you've had video game culture and community flowing through your blood for the last decade or so, you feel the heart beat. It's honestly like not understanding why anyone would care if Half-Life 3 finally got announced.

I believed Final Fantasy and The Last Guardian were going to be shown, but I totally did not think Shenmue III was remotely possible. It was so crazy seeing the legendary trifecta in one conference. After a little reflection, though, the reality behind these three titles makes the reveals a little bittersweet. However, just the sheer shock from seeing all three will be difficult to top. Definitely a conference to remember.

Nah, it's admitting that it's so good, I'd like to continue playing it on modern hardware. Your post is silly.

Exactly this.

I mean no one looks at a remaster of a movie for Blu-Ray with better sound and video quality and says "Well what's the big deal? It was already out on VHS!"
With S3, FF7r, Last guardian, I'm not even sure if Fallout 4 would stand a chance in hype train battle.
Dear god you're right, I forgot completely about Fallout 4 even being announced after this flurry of punches the Sony E3 Conference did.

Is this the greatest conference ever?

Seriously, I can't think of another time that 3 absolute MEGATONS, that were just this morning thought to be impossible for any one of them (let alone all three), were all announced ON TOP of insanely good looking first party reveals and new gameplay for AAA first party titles.

WHAT THE FUK!?!?

I just can't get over how hard Sony went. MS set the bar REALLY high and Sony blew them out of the goddamn water.

To me this still isn't as good as 2013 for Sony. I went into the conference wondering if I was going to continue gaming into the next generation besides Nintendo. I thought the industry was moving away from used games, towards online only, and more of the same boring AAA games that hurt the last generation. I was very skeptical about Sony and Microsoft's future plans.

Then Jack Trenton went on the stage and announced that Sony was supporting used games, no online connection was required, and $399. I went from a cynic to pre-ordering the console in the span of two hours.

now I feel I am being rewarded with a great 12-18 months for PS4 on the horizon (no pun intended)

Shenmune isn't going to take just 2m to make. I think sony is going to be covering the rest of the costs, but presumably this is there to prove that people care and that doing so is not a waste of money.

My only disappointment is that they didn't show some footage from the Uncharted collection detailing the improvements. It didn't need to take a lot of time, but I am curious how Uncharted 1 looks.

I wonder if the Kickstarter is going to guage whether there should be a Shenmune HD collection or not.

yeah i was wondering if i missed that, seems kinda weird if its coming out this year to have no gameplay footage at e3.

The nostalgia made this conference. FFVII Remake, Shenmue 3, and The Last Guardian. The theatre here exploded after each reveal. That's a hard trio to top. The new stuff was meh outside of Horizon Zero Down, which imo could challenge Uncharted 4 for some GOTYs in 2016. I don't even know what to say about Media Molecules ip. I'll just say that I hope they get back to making traditional games like Tearaway and LBP. I'm sure Dreams will be a nice platform for he creative types, but that was never my forte. Dissapointed there was no Persona 5, Rime, Quantic Dream, Bloodborne, Kingdom Hearts or FFXIV. AND NO LEVEL 5 GAME (Ni No Kuni 2). Some of those leaked/early gameplay videos they released prior to E3 should have taken the place of some weak points. Ratchet and Clank, Nathan Drake Collection, and Until Dawn should have played roles in the conference.

An old game, a remake, and a kickstarter of a game not even in development? Doesn't excite me at all because it has no nostalgia to pull off of, I am too young to care about Shenmue even though I played them after the fact, and I stopped caring about FF after XIII killed my love of the franchise. Heck, I am actually probably too young to even care about FFVII, really.

Horizon genuinely excited me, its a great looking, new IP. I want more of that, and I might buy a PS4 for it.

You and I are in the same boat, it seems, though for slightly different reasons. I can understand the excitement and not understand the excitement at the same time, because there's so much baggage and caveats to it all.

Shenmue fans are crazy at the best of times for this series, so I'm not surprised that they're happy, regardless of the announcement being a glorified preorder that won't be fulfilled for at least 2 years and it shows no faith in gamers by playing the Kickstarter lottery for them to "prove" they want it.
I get the happiness, but I can't help but feel it rubs the wrong way, especially Sony's "excitement" for the franchise's return. So excited that, if you are actually funding the majority of the game's development, you still want to bilk $2 million minimum from gamers up-front? And if you're not funding the remainder, you're just wanting the glory of it at your press conference despite having nothing to do with it? It sets a really gross precedent that I can't ignore.

TLG could be great, but the Ueda shout-out felt gross. And it's difficult to really have a connection to a game that was announced so long ago. I have the same issue with Final Fantasy XV, it's just been too long coming that my excitement has been bled dry. But of all the games, this is the one I can see myself being happiest about at the end of the road.

FFVII at this point will never die. Square Enix is stuck in a nostalgia vortex, at this point, where fans will never let go of the franchise's past. Part of the blame for that definitely belongs to Square Enix, though, they've had far too many bungling moments with FF and it naturally ensures that the fanbase remains fixated on this one point in history, this singular glory moment, for better or worse.
We should be happy that fans got what they wanted, at least, but I don't share the opinion of FFVII (or to a lesser extent, the FF games of the PS1 generation as a whole) as a singular pinnacle moment, so the remake just isn't that exciting for me.

The excitement has a real foundation, but it's being treated as a universal glory moment in gaming when some of it has really troubling connotations that some people can't overlook.

But by all means, to those who are happy? Go party in the streets, folks, the people who aren't 100% on this will talk amongst ourselves. Go and be merry. :)

This so much. I wonder if people are seriously thinking that they will only need 2 million.

Don't worry. Those 3 games will continue to be at E3 for a long time. :)
And they fucking better be. =D

And then Sony announces next E3 they've hired Kojima and all of KojiPro to work for them.

Of course they can top themselves.

I have this vibe that kojima probably would take a break from gaming world after all this fiasco. I just hope he didn't burn out.

The only "dream announcement" that wasn't there was Sony buying back the rights to Crash Bandicoot

Right. and legend of dragoon 2.

I think the estimate was around $30 million in an interview about kickstarter a few years back with the creator. Its why I find this kickstarter so gross. Its just a way to get a bunch of fans to overpay for the game when Sony is spending a huge chunk of money to make it anyways.

Also, I think the FFVII remake will outsell FFXV.

Horizon looked awesome.

I fear Sony probably can't top this e3 themselves in the future.
They can.

Gran Turismo 7
God of War 4
Gravity Rush
TLOU 2
FF7 actual gameplay
VF6
Sony Grand Scale JRPG
Grand Theft Auto 6
etc...

Plenty of wow left. Today, Sony showed something very important, and that is the most technically impressive games this gen will likely be on PS4 as far as consoles go. They have IP that can go above Shenmue and TLG. Nothing is as big as FF7 though besides more of FF7.

Do we know what the E3 Voucher from the theaters give? They say the "digital gifts" will only be sent in a few weeks.

Shu looked really genuine in his enthusiasm. I think he really came across as sincerely grateful to Ueda for all the work that must have gone on behind the scenes over the years since 2009. I feel excited but fear disappointment. Like you say, it's been a long time.

While I dislike how they are doing it, I understand why. If I recall Shenmue had pretty bad sales. With this they can gauge how many people are interested, at the same time people that invest get a little something extra.

I can't believe what I'm reading.

Whether you've played the titles or not, these were titles requested by gamers for almost 10 years and more. Three titles that have gained a cult status. It's as if Nintendo never released a Zelda title for 10+ years until today, then the Internet would explode.

That is exactly what has happened today. Multiplied by 3. History has been made.

So what games are we going to laugh about never happening from now on? I guess there's still HL3 but 3 classic memes died in the span of about 20 minutes. This was a literal checklist of against-all-odds announcements.

A kickstarter announce at a corporate press event is ingenious. Tagging your name onto it without any initial risk at all. "Hey, play this game! On our platform! That you love! Oh, but you have to pay them to make it, no way are we investing our money on something so odd! But please play it on our platform!"

728,387 views for this thread and only 30,629 for the competitor from this morning? how?

Page refreshes maybe? I (and many others I'm sure) had to absolutely spam the refresh button as GAF kept chugging and going up and down.

Edit: Feel there's little point in replying (as discussion's moved on), but I totally agree it was a damn incredible conference, and it shouldn't be surprising that the Sony conference has significantly more views. Over 20 times the amount of views is damn crazy disparity in audience however.

I feel like after today Sony needs to change it's motto to "Where dreams become real"

I still can't believe all this. I'm afraid to go to sleep and wake up to it all being fake.
