Nintendo still has not gotten a grip. The only hope is NX now. I'll buy Star Fox Zero even though the graphics were pretty bland. The fact that it was the highlight of the show was very telling of the future of the Wii U.

"here's how I figured out the logo for Star Fox"

What are you guys complaining about? The Digital Event was AMAZING!

Star Fox
Two new Zelda games
Two new Metroid games
Fire Emblem
SMTxFE
Xenoblade X
Two new Animal Crossing games
Yoshi's Wooly World
Youkai Watch
New Mario & Luigi game
Mario Tennis
Super Mario Maker

That's FIFTEEN games. FIFTEEN GAMES PEOPLE!

And you're complaining. WOW.

Underwhelming versions, party games and 3DS games at a time when 3DS is looking long in the tooth.
The most in depth footage for Wii U this year was Starfox, Wooly World and Mario Maker - all of which we saw last year.

This was an overt "fuck you, we've stopped caring about you" to everyone still anticipating quality Nintendo titles on the Wii U, which cost some of us a lot of money, and which some of us have dutifully supported.

I've bought and supported every Nintendo console but this is the straw that breaks the camels back for me. No NX unless Nintendo massively change, and I'm certainly not in at launch if I can't trust that they'll actually support their consoles for a minimum of the traditional life cycle.

Some of you are far too forgiving. And apparently still enjoy the 3DS.

Nintendo heard everything GAF asked for:

New Metroid: It's a Prime Hunters coop spinoff for the 3DS with sports multiplayer instead of the only good part of the original Hunters.

Animal Crossing Wii U: It's a Mario Party game where you need amiibos for characters.

New Zelda: It's like Four Swords but for the 3DS

New Paper Mario: It's a Mario and Luigi crossover

No Donkey Kong Announcement by Retro: We actually got noting from Retro
Lol I sweat it's like the biggest troll of all time.

When we saw the new Animal Crossing was a spinoff, that was the cue we're in a transition period toward the NX. It still looks fun, but clearly we all want the real deal and it isn't happening on the Wii U.

Id rate that as one of the worst of all time, rehashed games weve seen some for two e3s now if not more. You would think they were miles ahead of the rest making money right left and centre because theyve simply given up not even tried this year.

I just cant believe what i just saw and tbh they deserve the shit they get as this was a ninetendo not trying and not giving a shit, at least i hope it was and they are now just turning towards nx because if they thought this was a good effort and a good shot into the arm of wii u then they are crazier and have lost the plot more than anyone had dared to predict.

Why does Nintendo announce Zelda games and then not release them for the console they announced them for

2 times now. Now no one will ever ever ever buy a console for upcoming Zeldas because they might get burned.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot
we have no idea that zelda will be on NX,

The biggest sign of nintendo's desperation for games is mario tennis. The 3DS was a cut and paste and there's literally nothing new they can do with it.

They announced a Wii U Animal Crossing game and it's a damn board/puzzle game. That's just unbelievable. A new Metroid game that was for the 3DS...the 3DS? Man, they really need to get better at selecting platforms for certain games.

I love how Gaf gets super excited for a game that didn't even start developing but was announced at the Sony presser but scoff at several Wii-U games coming out in the next 6 months

Should have written,"Its like Four Swords, but with one less sword".

They really need to consolidate their portable and home console business. The line-up, taken as a whole is pretty decent, but it's clear that they (and the few third party partners they have left) can only put forth a solid lineup for one ecosystem.

I really hope this is the basis of the NX.

Totally agree.

Maybe NX will be both: portable AND home console.

I don't care about any of the games announced, but I virtually always dislike Nintendo's games so that isn't new for me.

What I'm interested in is how they position themselves for the future. Was there any discussion of mobile expansion at all? That's not like the NX, some vague thing that we all know is in the future but which they won't announce until enough games are lined up. Mobile expansion is supposed to start this year.

The multiplayer was great. It was a very serviceable online arena shooter on a portable with voice chat--it was amazing at the time. Hell, I'd take an up-port of Prime Hunters with expanded content over what we got. The original build they had before they scaled everything down, looked right in-line with what the 3DS can do. It essentially looked like Metroid Prime running on a Ps2.

The "Nintendo is dead" people seem to forget that the hype machine for Nintendo is not latched to e3 like MS and Sony's are. Nintendo drops bombs whenever they feel like it via directs, so today's conference being an extra-long direct and *really* celebrating Mario's anniversary isn't really all that bad.

I'm sure they're also going to be dropping bombs in their tree house live stuff, they've gotten really good at year-round anticipation

I'll give you this, and I was thinking the same to be honest.

Still though, are they really daft enough not to realize that this is arguably the best time to drop even TEASER announcements about your main projects?

Let me preface this by saying I'm the biggest Nintendo fan boy you'll ever meet. I don't plan on selling my Wii U or whatever. I do need to get a New 3DS since my old one has a broken circle pad.

I think this event really sums up where Nintendo is. The Wii U is, for all intents and purposes, dead. They'll release what they have to just to keep their heads above water. They'll do what they can to maximize profits. (That's why we see so much Amiibo integration.)

The biggest takeaway is that Nintendo simply cannot support two devices on their own. I think the NX has to be a hybrid console/handheld. I think they have the resources to support one system on their own without too much trouble.

It doesn't matter what Nintendo releases hardware wise. The 3rd parties are not going to come back. It'll be three games since EA sports has supported the Nintendo home console (Madden/FIFA 14, 15, 16). It's now lacking the last two CoDs. With the exception of Just Dance 16, I don't think there was a single 3rd party game announced for Wii U this E3. These companies aren't just going to rush back until the player base is there.

I think that's why this even really showed how Nintendo is caught between a rock and a hard place. As a business, they have to salvage what they can. However, they can't afford to invest money in games that aren't going to sell at all. Then, they have to make sure they don't tick off the people who have invested in their platforms.

It's for the last reason that I think this even failed so hard. They showed what they had, but what they had is not acceptable while still marketing the device. They needed to open up some more Virtual Console stuff at least. They need something to satisfy those who have bought the system. Something. Anything, really.

They didn't do it with this conference. They just managed to tick off everyone.

Agreed on all counts.

Seriously, I consider myself a tolerent Nintendo fanboy. I know that they are kind of disconnected from their audience, but MAN. What was that Digital Event ? It started great with Starfox even if it was ugly, then it keeped sinking. The best part was the shorts with the puppets. Everything else was just franchise slaughter / milking.

I enjoyed the bit about level construction though.

Every time a new game was shown today sadness followed it not far behind.

Who wants these Animal Crossing Spinoffs over a proper Wii U game, honestly? Jerk me off some more.

It was just shitty spinoff after shitty spinoff. Way to make Zelda and Metroid look like e-shop games. Fuck that Mario RPG and Tennis. Mario Maker has some hope to be fun for a little while, but they just kept trying to push it so hard. StarFox and Yoshi are the only two games worth buying that they showed and even then they aren't really that new. Lost interest in Fire Emblem when they said it was two version nonsense.

Why did I buy a New 3DS XL again? Way to show pretty much nothing.

I'm half tempted to juggle Amiibo in front of a sign that says "spinoffs" in my Mario hat. That was that event to me.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot

No one bought the wii u .

2d Mario, Amiibo, Animal Crossing, 2d Mario, Amiibo, Amiibo, Starfox HD Remaster, Amiibo, Super Mario Maker, Vocaloid J-Pop something, Amiibo, Mario Tennis, Mario theme on maracas, guitars and pianos...and other instruments.

I don't understand this. Nintendo lost in every category vs the other publishers at a whole.

They even lost the best yarn game category.

Well for me it was mainly the balance of stuff I'd seen before, and brand new games. For me, Microsoft's conference was yet another predictable show outside of the announced backwards compatibility, and while a handful of Sony's announcements were extremely high profile and unexpected, the two biggest, FF7 and Shenmue are multiplatform so those kind of lost their impact. Platform exclusive early content shit annoyed me too, in both conferences.

Oh, and almost every game having gameplay rather than a CGI trailer was also great. A bit of a chat about the games development after each one was nice too.

Mario Tennis, Starfox Zero, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, & Zelda: Triforce Heroes all got my attention, the latter two looking like nice little spins on established games, and Starfox's different vehicle sections intrigued me, Platinum's name attached to it sealed the deal, not bad considering they didn't even have a developer a year ago. And Mario Tennis is probably my favourite modern tennis game at the moment, so my hype for that is palpable.

---Smash bros. Direct (with Ryu and Roy, sadly spoiled).
---Nintendo World Championships (with Super Mario Maker at the end)
---Digital Event (showcasing Star Fox Zero at the start)
---Treehouse Live throughout the week
---Something else? Maybe, who knows.

Nintendo's strategy has been to give little announcements before and during E3 week rather than one big singular presentation. They did this last year, they did it again this year. It clear they'd rather stretch the news cycle as much as they can for one reason or another.

A little 3-5 minute video of "things to come" probably could have alleviated a lot of the strife that's going around right now.

I don't think that was a good show outside of Star Fox and Paper Mario and Luigi, but I've gotten over it since their 2015 lineup for Wii U really appeals to me. Really surprised at the 3DS focus since that's typically not their MO at E3, though.

But those mega bombs of games not coming for 2+ years! Fuck actually playing games. I'm just gonna fantasize about playing those games instead.

Obviously Nintendo's moving all their big hitters to the next console. I don't see the Wii U getting much support after this year. The fact that it hasn't received a dedicated IP sequel (Zelda, Metroid, Mario) three years into its life is proof enough.

Probably for the best, though as a Wii U owner it's kind of a rip.

These companies aren't just going to rush back until the player base is there.

Not to mention, Nintendo fans are not the players that third parties go after. You guys may not notice it, but some fans who are most vocal online also tend to represent the base, and the ones who always go "Oh they put a shit effort into this game. This third party sucks!" actually has an impact.

In other words, who do you think a third party wants to develop for? A hyper critical Nintendo player or a non-Nintendo player? The latter does not really exist, so we see the result today.

Hehe It's a pretty good way to comfort us.
I'm not done with Nintendo, I think it would be silly but I'm really pissed off.

You know, I usually roll my eyes when people say things like "I'm done with Nintendo," but damn. That was terrible. I'm a pretty big fan but what I saw showed me that Nintendo doesn't make the sort of games I care about anymore. It's kinda sad and I'm sure my distaste will ease up in the future, but I'm no longer looking forward to anything Nintendo does.

They view E3 as a core gamer thing so no nothing about mobile

What did I miss besides the new Starfox and Metroid trailers? the summary thread hasn't been updated yet. I also caught a glimpse of puppets in the Metroid trailer.

Did Iwata even make a physical appearance? I'm concerned about his health.

Quite the contrary. We do. That's is what makes it so much worse for the NX. Its like affirmation that this is how they do things, and that we should expect nothing different from their next system.

I hope they treat the nx, no matter if its a failing system, with games coming out compared to the fucking wii with yearly droughts between releases.
