What most developers ever want is to get positive reinforcement through buzz and sales. People clamoring for women and a certain depiction of women is the proverbial path laid out for them.

Alright, I don't entirely disagree with him. Don't have a problem with it per se but I like that characters like Elle or Tripp for example are progressive characters, yet not a reaction to Anita Sarkeesian, etc. They come off more honest that way to me.

That's the thing that confuses me. Are people legitimately worried about poor ol' pubs being strong-armed into using female protagonists as opposed to their more focus-tested bald, male counterparts? Who are these publishers more worried about pissing off Tumblr than turning a buck?
I think they can relax. Chances are, if a game like Dishonored 2 or Horizon has a female protagonist it's because the devs wanted it to. Not sure why they don't show the same amount of concern for the amount of devs who are likely strong-armed into normalizing their character designs for mass appeal.
If the character is good, does it matter?

Females are (slightly over) half of the population. They're not a minority like minorities are. There's never going to be a point where you see minorities represented in games to the same degree as females or white people.
But don't despair look how much help being loud about issues did for feminism this year! Let's be loud about other issues to bring up other representation in the following years. Just, you know, preferably not shitting in a thread where we're celebrating our progress so far!

I am loving it. We have all had mothers. Strong powerful women in lead roles are a plus!
I for one am looking forward to Horizon, Tomb Raider, and Mirror's Edge.
Some of my favorite scenes in TLOU was playing as Ellie. They just did the feel of how the character responded right.

I agree with the fact that we need more diversity in gaming, but every single time a character that's even mildly sexualized is shown, the reaction by most mainstream advocates of equality is a highly negative one, one that hints their focus is to indeed KILL SEXY WITH FIRE. A recent example would be when Bilzzard showed off that muscular woman for their shooter at around the same time as they announced the dark elf woman for their moba. The most common reaction I saw to this could be paraphrased as "One step forward, one step back."
I do like that games are becoming more inviting overall, but I still occasionally want Soul Calibur IV Ivy, and I don't feel ashamed about that.

Aloy was great in Horizon. I felt like she was introducing me to the world and she also cared about what she was fighting against (in a way). When she mentioned the ''little one'' while she was in the bushes.
Here's the thing: Can they deal with serious issues (again) now because there is a larger category of female heroes?
I think for some of us who have been gaming longer that it hasn't necessarily been an issue of "can", but its more of a debate with others who may have just started.
I find the choices great, but to me I've always had Lara Croft and various female leads in RPGs and the like.
I think the dude bro Gears character wasn't bad. I feel like awkward characters like the new Gears 4 is just too bland. I miss the brotherhood. I think it could all work. I don't want to feel stale because they didn't want a passively aggressive character. It gets extremely stale and Gears 4 felt like it was an ABC special.
I think people are taking things way too far by calling out Gears of War 1 - 3. I think in a way it takes away from brotherhood and other good feelings. I seriously don't like changing everything, but I am also at a stage where I see more younger people fighting for some of these changes. A part of me could care less than some do. Before Doom was shown I was gonna predict that the main character would be female.
Feminism is to bring women to equal standing to man in terms of choice, opportunity, treatment, and respect. Not representation. Representation is a unnecessarily desire, it[s like a Workplace that mostly Women work for hiring a bunch of men just to have equal gender representation even though the men are unqualified or there were better female applicants for the job. That's not what we should be supporting or saying feminism supports, so we can say it was highly desired from people for these sort of protagonists. But it wasn't a necessity or purpose of what Feminism should be or is.
So in essence:
Unfair Women Treatment and Objectification is what feminists are challenging the video game industry with.
Representation is a desire, or a want, but not a necessity needed.

Minorities want SOME representation NOT all representation. So your comment about white people is ultimately meaningless.
Don't get me wrong they made progress, it would be nice to life in a world with my diverse characters and not the usual standard white straight male.

Something I've noticed is that most of the far- and near-future games have pretty good representation of minorities. Not necessarily up to par, but getting better. It's mostly in fantasy and "historic" games that the lack of diversity is being felt, but that's overblown because those kinds of games are seriously in vogue right now.
Anyway, that's a subject for a different thread. In here we're being happy that there are finally an appropriate number of females in games!
