Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

GTA V just wasn't good. San Andreas is my favorite gta and the return to LS let me down immensely. Heists were such a let-down and don't get me started about the multiplayer. Although, the soundtrack was pretty good.

In fact, I'll go as far as to say that the last good Rockstar game was RDR. Max Payne 3 did the complete opposite of what made the series great
except the shooting
and LA Noire was a disappointment. Such a shame because at one point they used to be my favorite developer/publisher. At this point, they're just doing virtually the same thing for every game.

Oh fun!

- Goldeneye is massively overrated and wasn't anything special in 1997. I guess my perspective may have been skewed by having ready access to a decent PC and internet, but my first impression was "this is much worse than Quake", I just never understood the hype at all.

Arkham Origins is the best game in the series, despite it's obvious faults. I also think Payday 2 is one of the best Coop games ever made.

- Game length isn't important after about 10 hours, most long games feel bloated and tedious.

Agreed. Especially when you have a career, games that require 20+ hours seem like less of a game and more like a daunting task. It's one of the reasons I haven't purchased The Witcher 3. With Arkham Knight just around the corner, I won't have time to devote to multiple games.

I'm enjoying my time with Splatoon, but for a game that gets so much love here on GAF it has way too many flaws. Out the top of my head:

- just a handful of maps that get old quickly
- even fewer game modes
- very mediocre map rotations, just two at a time
- annoying news updates you can't skip
- locking content behind amiibos
- connection can get pretty bad (not because of my internet)
- not being able to change your load-out without exiting a game entirely

And I'm pretty sure I can come up with more. I suppose the solid, fun and quick gameplay rarely gets boring, I've been playing for 25+ hours so that's a very big pro, but I personally wouldn't give it more than a 7.

I think people are just euphoric Nintendo gave us something to itch our shooting cravings, but the game itself has a lot of improvements to be done. I hope and expect these issues to be straightened out in Splatoon 2, which I'm fairly certain is going to happen since Splatoon sells pretty well.
I hope we can see more thoughtful critiques of the game in the coming months. This is controversial not because it's wrong necessarily but because of the euphoria and the rabidness of the fanbase right now.

I absolutely agree with this. Though I'd put the treshold even lower, maybe 6-8 hours, as long as a game has enough replay value to warrant a second playthrough and make it enjoyable. But I love to replay games so there's that.

Overall game length is really overrated as a value metric IMO.

What? Tekken 4 was garbage. The hell were they thinking?
Ruined the whole series.

My thoughts on Tekken 4 is that it tried a lot of new stuff, some of which worked (great new characters, great moveset changes, wall implementation) and some of which didn't (position changes, elevation), but that it was nice to see them experiment to keep things from getting stagnant. It still played well overall though, and while it did have some balance issues, that was only a problem for high level tournament play.

It definitely didn't ruin the series, since Tekken 5 kept the good, got rid of the bad, and was fantastic.

Yeah definitely. I was in to longer games when I was in high school, but now they're such a commitment that it's intimidating to get started. Still haven't played Skyrim for just that reason - I don't want to start if I'm not going to be able to finish.

Word. Part of the reason why I can't stand open world games anymore.

Would take a well crafted 6-8 hours linear game anytime over a 100 something hour game with Fedex style quests.

Honestly, 6-8 is far too short.

15 hours is a good number. That's a bit more than what the first metroid prime took (which I think is too short).

-Single-player FPS campaigns should go the way of Rock Band. In fact, all shooters afflicted by CoD should go away.

-All Mario Party games range from good to great.

-I see a game on steam I like, then notice it has 3rd party DRM, I don't buy.

-REmake on gamecube is superior to the HD REmake because the griminess, grain and low-frame rate adds to the game's aesthetic. Adding a clean font, removing the grain lessens the experience and makes me feel like I'm playing Serbia.

Turn based RPGs are going extinct and are never coming back in a meaningful way in the console space. They were developed in part as a result of the technical limitations of the platforms they were built on not being able to handle he scope of the developers vision and as new gameplay types emerge, the need for what was essentially a stand in for combat has diminished. If that wasn't controversial enough: the FFXIII series is the pinnacle of turn based combat, but since people hated that game developers will never even try to push that bar any further.

You do realize that action based games predate turn-based combat, right? TB was always a design choice inspired by tabletop RPGs.

I dream of a hybrid XII/XIII battle system where the core of XIII is kept in place with the Gambits of XII and the ability to switch mid-battle...anyway...

-2D Sonic is better than 2D Mario
I love Mario, but 3D Mario always did it better for me. Sonic might have lost his way going into 3D, but Sonic 1-3, S&K, and (more recently for me) Sonic CD are not only the pinnacle of the franchise, but very easily up there with the best of the genre. Prior to Adventure, I had always enjoyed Sonic's simplicity. Gathering rings, platforming and by extension, timing. (Never understood the disdain for a lack of speed...) The boss fights were generally more fun too. I'll never forget the Doomsday Zone either.
Flying through outer space as Super Sonic chasing down Robotnik beats tossing a shell at Bowser's hovering smiley crockpot any day

Ico is a shit game.

Yeah

Since I've been playing new and old JRPGs a lot during the last couple of months, I think this fits here perfectly: I find both Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI quite boring. Which is insane, I love JRPGs, they're easily my favorite genre, and these two are like THE JRPG classics of all time.

I think Mass Effect 3 is great. The endings were poorly implemented, but they're also based on possible outcomes to the ai singularity, which I think is neat. Also, Citadel is the best DLC ever.

This is going to really expose me as an old bastard but having grown up with Doom and Nukem 3D etc. I just absolutely have hated any 'modern' FPS games I've tried. The fun just isn't there for me no matter how many innovations they cram in there.
Give me keycards or death.

Have you played both System Shock games?

Never played that one actually. I stopped with Half Life 2. I thought it was a great game but started being too involved and complicated for my tastes.

On another note, I absolutely loathe this bizarre story over gameplay fetish many games are all about now. I don't want to see a movie, that's why I bought a damn video game.

FEAR is absolutely phenomenal and you should play it.

Terrible horror game with the most rudimentary story ever – but an utter masterpiece of an action game, possibly GOAT FPS for me and I've not even finished it. It feels classic like DOOM most of the time.

It's like the opposite of Half Life 2.

  • FF9 was the best single player FF we've gotten so far

Are you saying one of the multiplayer ones (FFXI, FFXIV, FFCC, i'm sure there are others) is better than IX and IX is the best single player one? I mean that would probably be much more controversial opinion.

FEAR is great. Just turn off the cutscenes and enjoy the gameplay.

Never played the multiplayer one's, so I wouldn't know.

Since there's seemingly no thread to vent, I'm going to try and twist my frustrations into a controversial post.

Half Life 3 is bigger than all that was announced today. Shenmue isn't even a comparison, Final Fantasy VII (which I am excited for) is a remake Square will probably fuck up, and The Last Guardian is a semi-unknown quantity that, unlikely Half Life, didn't end on a cliffhanger 8 fucking years ago.

I'm glad all three are finally out of the way, and I hope they turn out great... But damnit, I'd trade them all for Half Life 3.

Shoulder camera is the worst trend in history and is ruining gaming.
Its use should be restricted to when the character is behind cover only.

It's a bad, forced, compromise between the advantages of first and third person.

Ico is a shit game.

Wouldn't call shit, but I don't think it deserves all the praise it gets. The story is rather good, but the gameplay and controls are made of jank and frustration and just aren't very good at all.

Anyway, No Man's Sky just sounds like the most mindnumbingly boring thing in God knows how long to me. I honestly don't get the hype for that game.

Bad gameplay makes a game bad for me, and I really, really couldn't deal with the gameplay in Ico. I tried again recently, and it was even worse than I'd remembered.

And I agree on NMS, although I can see a bunch of people absolutely loving it. I praise its ambition.

Oh, absolutely. The gameplay in Ico isn't particularly great, what made me enjoy my time with it was the story. On the other Shadow of the Colossus, at least the HD version, has so shitty controls and gameplay I just couldn't find anything to enjoy about it.

There's way too much contrast in The Witcher 3's lighting. Dark areas are pitch black and bright areas are blinding. I can't even see what's happening half the time.

-SF3 beats all other SF's ... Anyone who says otherwise is a div.

-Mortal Kombat X and Killer Instinct are both more enjoyable than SF4.

-Bombjack was awesome and needs to be brought back into everyones lives

-WWE Wrestling Games from smackdown onwards have all sucked.

-Space Harrier is shit and ugly.

-Xbox one has a much better catalog then PS4. I wish it didnt but I struggle to find interesting 1st party products from Sony. Last of us was the last thing I enjoyed. Everything else has a better product in it's genre from other companies. Rarely I find a sony Bank Rolled game that I truly find better than any thing else similar.. Halo > Killzone. Forza Horizon > Driveclub. Tomb Raider > uncharted. etc etc

-Any game over 15 hours should not be made

-RPG's are boring.

-iOS/Android have ruined mobile gaming. Vita is dead because of them along with Sony's lack of commitment.Mobile gaming will now be dead forever.

-Lego games are fun but not worth the money. Each time they are identical and after the initial reveal of characters designed in lego, they become stale.

-Game of thrones from Telltale sucks ass.

-Wolf among us was better than walking dead

-Hotline miami 2 is awesome and lives up to the first.

-Shenmue II lost a lot of charm that Shenmue 1 oozed.

-Max Payne 3 wasnt awful like people say

-GTA IV was terrible

....I could do this all day

I really really really wanted to like Shenmue when I played it originally on my DC, but while playing it I had the dawning realisation that I was doing a boring and monotonous 'job' in the game to fund my playtime of Space Harrier and Hang On, while saving up to buy a virtual Saturn so I could continue player Space Harrier and Hang On without doing the boring in-game job. Both games I owned in the real world anyway. Playing Shenmue was the boring jobb

Mario Galaxy isn't anywhere near as good as Mario 64 or even Mario Sunshine. The reason it's so overrated is because 99.9% of the rest of the games on the Wii are absolute shite.

Seem like an asshat here but..

Dark Souls and in fact all of the series aren't difficult games at all. They're easy once you get the combat system down.

Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros Wii U, while good, offer no real substantial differences over previous games in the franchise. To me, they feel like Nintendo is doing the bare minimum with each release, but are not called out on this in the same way that other series from other publishers might be. For example, MK8's main difference over the 3DS version is the inclusion of anti-gravity courses, which has no real effect on gameplay. Sega All-Star Racing Transformed actually feels like it offers more.
