The E series only has 16 zones on their largest models. Models under 50" only have 5 or 6 zones. FALD isn't really worth it with zone counts that low.
 
I have a Sony LED TV. The problem I'm noticing is most edge light LED TV have the light bleed issue where "clouding" occurs on the screen. The TV has a very small input lag and looks great.

This might be a little off topic but does anyone know how to fix that clouding problem?

People sometimes have luck massaging the screen with a microfibre cloth. Clouding was a known issue with certain Samsung sets last year and significant reductions in clouding were had by the massage technique. Couldn't hurt to try.
 
First review for the Sony 75" X940C

Having mentioned the JS9500, though, it’s worth quickly going through the key differences between Samsung’s flagship range and the 75X9405C, as recorded during a direct head-to-head.
Samsung’s advantages include higher and possibly more HDR-friendly brightness, purer whites versus the slightly yellowish Sony, and slightly less backlight blooming in the black bars around 21:9-ratio films and around bright objects that appear against dark backdrops. It also has slightly less noisy upscaled pictures.

However, Sony’s 4K upscaling yields a greater sense of detail, its colours are richer and more dynamic, leaving the Samsung’s pictures appearing a touch milky by comparison. It also delivers a better sense of depth with 2D images and suffers less with on-screen reflections than Samsung’s curved model.

We can’t, alas, comment on the 75X9405C’s HDR talents at this point due to the firmware update not being available yet. Whether feeding it HDR will expose limitations in Sony’s screen or make it burst into even greater life – as happens with the Samsung JS9500 range – remains to be seen.

The Samsung has 150 zones on the 65" and 200 on the 78" compared to 84 zones on the 75" Sony. Both seem to have their strong points but no clear winner.

So you’ll be very pleased to hear that, using the TV’s game picture preset, we recorded a very impressive input lag measurement of around 20ms. The Samsung gets about the same input lag but game mode disables FALD to achieve it. Advantage Sony for gaming.

I need some serious help here please.
Various PS4 games run at full screen just fine on my Sony W600B HDTV 60"
However some digital games don't; I keep seing it in the middle surrounded by a black border.

What is causing this? I could use the PS4's internal option to increase the size but I'd rather it do it automatically to begin with.

Reading online there's apparently an 'auto-wide' option but I can't find it anywhere when I go to the Option menu of my HDTV.
 
Does anyone know when the Sony TVs with Android come to Europe?

I need a new TV and want one with Android TV because I always hated sluggish TV menus and also because it's a built-in Chromecast. Sony's past Bravias have been some of the best regarding input lag. Decent picture is enough for me, as I come from a cheap, shitty, old Samung-TN panel (and because of that input lag is very important to me).

Yep, I'm interested to see how the flagship CX900 will compare to the Sony and Samsung offerings. Their OLED coming out this year rumor sounds more realistic if those LG panel yields hold up.
 
How will these new OLEDs everyone keeps talking about waiting for do on input lag? Feel like I'd rather buy a Sony new I'd their input lag will suck and I have to wind up waiting years for it to improve. :

This is true. I have a Panasonic ST60 and the picture quality is incredible but when I play shooters the input lag definitely has a negative effect. Lately I've connected my PS4 to my monitor and the lag is noticeably improved. Although whats interesting is that 60fps on a plasma feels so much smoother than on an LCD panel because the plasma doesn't have motion blur like an LCD does. So at this point, depending on the type of game I'm playing I switch between my plasma and monitor

My TV knowledge isn't that good but I don't think the panel (LCD, Plasma, OLED) has anything to do with input lag. I think it's all about how the processing works.

But anyway I agree. I hope next year we can see most TVs crack the 20ms mark in game mode. Sony is king atm with a TV that has 17, I believe.
 
Any other reviews (or even impressions) of the 940c incoming? I keep waffling but after the first review thinking about getting one as our living-room mainstay for a few years at least.
 
Shit. I bought a TV without even thinking of consulting GAF. I got the Sony 50" X830C, is that at least decent for games? Reviews online seem less than informative.

I mean, I think it looks fantastic, but I'm one of those dudes who can't tell the difference between 60fps and 30fps unless they're side by side so...

Best tv in its size class. 4k tv with 120hz native, x reality pro video processor does same incredible upscaling as top Sony models, android os with PlayStation Now support.. You done good, kid.
 
Oleds finally starting to come out. Does that mean Panasonic going to start making good tvs again? Still using my GT30, it blew up once and fixed it with replacement parts, so waiting for a good 4k oled.

Panasonic has a prototype OLED TV already in the works. I expect it to be at IFA in September. It is using LG panels but all the processing inside is done by Panasonic. I've never owned a Panasonic but always hear their processing is GOAT

I'm going to be buying a TV within the next few months, eyeing the flat OLEd coming out soon.

I have a PN58C8000 (2010 model). Would the picture of any recent TV from a reputable brand be better than mine at the moment? Even if its just an LED? Or is that not how TV tech works?
 
Anyone have any experience with the LG UB8200 TVs? Micro Center has a good price on the 60 inch model but I can't find a ton of reviews that mention gaming.

I work with that TV for my job. Looks absolutely stunning. The curved display does not detract much because viewing angles down wash out like LED. My next set is 100% going to be an OLED.
 
fug it...getting a decent discount from a local guy so going for the 940c. Once some amazing OLED tech comes out in a few years, I can always move it to the bedroom where we actually need a huge TV because our opposing wall is so far away. so win-win :D
 
Seems like LG has different models/names for their OLEDs in the US and in the EU, right? Well, I'll still ask here:

Amazon.de is listing the LG 55EC940V for preorder which sounds like the successor to the 930V going by the name. Which is like the only kind of popular OLED being sold at around 2000-2500€.

When I google the 940V I can't find any information about it. The search results are actually really weird, as if the TV doesn't even exist.
Has anyone else read anything about that model? Improvements, date?
 
So I wasn't sure where to put this, but I need some help. I purchased my Samsung UE48H6400AKXXU in October 2014 and instantly noticed quite bad clouding but massaged it and it became less apparent. However last weekend when using the TV, a new darker patch in the bottom left corner starting about 200 mm from the edge appeared. I've contacted currys where I got the tv from and they've passed me off to Samsung. I'm gonna ring Samsung withing the next hour and hope they can do something about it. Does anyone have any tips on how to make the dark patch more obvious, most of the time it's not noticeable but when light scenes come on it can be quite distracting. I'm just worried that whoever comes out to see it will say it isn't that bad and nothing will change.
 
Just bought Samsung h6400. Good TV for its price but unlike Sony TV I had to calibrate it still not satisfied.

Any how my question is why is brightness so low when watching 3d content. My blacklit panel is at full and all eco sensors are off. Still brightness is on dark side. Also how long do the battery of active shutter glasses last
 
I just bought a m50-c1 for 500 out the door!
In mario kart I can't see the various logos scrolling while a race is loading. And on Xbone calibration I can't see the closed eye.

Anyone have any setting tips?

I've had my eye on the Sony XBR55X850C (which is at the very top of my budget) and the XBR55X800B ($1,300, I thought this one had the best picture) along with the Samsung UN55JU6500 ($1,100). 3D isn't a must but I wouldn't mind it...

I checked out all of these TVs at Best Buy but of course I couldn't compare the same 4K material on each TV so that didn't help much.
I will be using an Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, and I will soon be upgrading the GPU in my X51 to a GTX 970 for native 4k content.

What are the advantages of curved TVs?

For a PC I think the Samsung is the only one capable of doing chroma 4:4:4 @ 4K @ 60hz. You might not notice it if you're sitting back using it to play games on, but close up it can make stuff look bad if you're using it like a regular monitor. My current 1080 TV has this problem when I connect it over HDMI
 
Really enjoying the couple days I've had with the 940c so far. Though we had a decent 55" Panny, the jump to 75" and 4K is just remarkable, and yet also remarkably easy to get accustomed to. I was worried the TV might dominate the room, but getting it mounted really did the trick. about 10-11' of distance is pretty perfect too though I realize we're not getting the "full benefit" of 4k that far back (tbh just in terms of FOV occupied by the screen I wouldn't want to be any closer or the screen to be any bigger).

Random observations:
-All the apps and options available are actually really cool. Netflix button seems kind of gimmicky maybe but we use Netflix a lot so I don't mind it.
-In terms of menus & options, I just wish navigation back and forth was a touch easier. (afaik) there's no overlay menu like I'm used to, just a full-on menu. It also takes many taps to get to settings (again unless I'm missing a shortcut). Half of this is probably just me getting used to the remote though.
-I know this is the bane of every 4k owner...but I do wish there was more 4k content. :P It doesn't even seem very easy to find on Amazon (afaict) but at least Netflix has a category for it. I'd buy the Sony box but it doesn't really seem worth it. I really do dig that resolution though and I'd pay decent money for more content.

Haven't played games yet, but that should be fun too, especially with the 20ms lag in game mode (which was actually one of the random factors that pushed me to get it).

Congrats. Looks like a solid set. Hopefully Sony doesn'y take too long on releasing the FW update for HDR. Amazon just launched a new series with UHD HDR and M-Go has some UHD content but only for Samsung sets right now. Their HDR titles are 100GB downloads so quality should be close to UHD BD quality.

I'm interested in the 940C but it's going to be a long shot for me. The extra 10 inches is nice but the price and size are too much. I would have to eliminate my component rack to make it fit and buy a larger stand to fit everything underneath. This would only add to cost. I just found out I get a corporate discount at the Samsung and Panasonic web stores so they are half the cost of the Sony for me.


Input Lag Results from the VE shootout:

LG 9600 Curved OLED: 50.8ms or 57.8ms (Couldn't hear him clearly)
Sony X940C: 36.2ms
Samsung 78" JS9500: 21.0ms
Panasonic 65" CX850: 39.8ms

The Samsung disables all processing to achieve its number while Sony maintains local dimming. Not sure how the Trusted Review got 20ms out of the Sony.

I haven't heard much on the JU6500, maybe look into the Samsung JU7100, it should be around your budget as well (and there are some reports of users successfully playing HDR clips on it & it working) The JU7100 is the model I have my eye on getting.

I posted about how my 60" Panny Plasma was killed by a lightning strike. Well, after lots of research and part hunting, I was able to repair it myself! I swapped the "A" board and my baby is back! Woohoo!!
