DOOM Gameplay Demo (E3 2015)

The demons look more like deranged mutants to me. Add some horns and hooves on some of them to give them more of a demonic quality. Maybe glowing red eyes maybe. Also, Cyberdemon looks like something out of a fantasy game like Darksiders 2. Kind of classes with the games style.

My biggest takeaway from the video is that I can't believe they still have such muted sound effects for the weapons - just like Doom 3. Really hope they're given more "oomph".

The footage I saw sounded like the audio source was from the stage mircophone recording the speakers, so it was difficult to gauge what it really sounds like. You're still right to be worried of course. Neither id nor Bethesda as a whole (although I did like the sound in Zenimax's Elder Scrolls Online) are exactly considered upper tier in sound design.

I wouldn't mind even more oomph, but go back and compare the Doom 3 shotgun sound effect to the Doom 4 shotgun sound effect. Doom 4's shotgun has a much deeper, more powerful sound.

quakke from DoomWorld drew up the map layout of the Mars base level:

Screen%20Shot%202015-06-18%20at%2011.29.48%20PM_zps3fe4aoui.png

Because that's been confirmed as the whole level hasn't it?
Like that is the whole thing.

No.

There is a bit too much Doom 3 for my taste. Not just sounds. So far we they showed 2 environments. Industrial complex and hell (i guess). The industrial/mars base one (plus the multiplayer video) gives very strong Doom 3 look but with bigger areas. And then some of the enemies... Talking about art direction of course, new game does look quite better tech wise.

So it looks like Marty talked about the level design here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KApp699WdE&feature=youtu.be&t=6557

He said the level design will consist of arena spaces connected with areas where you can explore for things like "weapon mods, power ups, and other goodies".

So the level design looks to be different than classic Doom, but will still involve exploration. It's still hard to tell exactly how it will work though.

At the very least, it looks like we'll get something less like this:

And more like this:

I wish they would have kept the old colors instead.

To be fair, it looks like a lot of that piss yellow is coming from just the lighting. If you watch some of the SnapMap footage, it can actually look quite colourful. Maybe if they just changed the ambient lighting to a dark red it would help? Hell, as much as I hate to admit it, DOOM 3 had a more "Hell" looking Hell than this does.

Ok, arena levels with pathways around them could be cool as long as you are given freedom on where you want to go and are not just given painkiller style attack waves with blocked doorways.

Oh, and for anyone complaining that the game looks too slow, compare the movement speed of this footage (https://youtu.be/2KApp699WdE?t=41m25s) with some footage from DOOM II (well, technically "Brütal DOOM ver 19", but the movement speed is the exact same as Vanilla DOOM). (https://youtu.be/H4kLpBUHf9E?t=3m21s)

Im not sure what that comparison is for....

But whoever that was who was playing brutal doom, literally just highlighted everything wrong with this game, 2 years before we ever even saw it, the moment he started talking about the misconception in the past with people who never played doom, who thought it was a 'dumb shooter'.... The same mistake made by all the 'me toos' trying to jump on dooms success with the diarrea tsunami of doom clones that all missed the mark.

This, this right here , is a dumb shooter, its a doom clone, with the doom ip slapped on it.

Ive literally found better doom, in a cereal box.

Thats from the snapmap footage? Hm that's actually good, guess I overlooked that small bit or wasn't paying attention to the speed at the moment. Felt it was difficult to gauge the speed from the other gameplay and trailer. The trailer had some speedy movements, but I noticed they all coincided with a takedown maneuver, so I thought the slower speed was the actual speed. But this looks like an alright speed.

Hm, the enemies still need to be more distinct from the background and gunplay needs to be fixed (damage amount is just not right IMO). If those two get fixed I'd definitely be interested again. No, to be exact, even if just the gun damage is fixed I'd be interested.

bb..but Carmack said Doom was shotguns and demons.

I think Brutal Doom and that above sentiment really affected how people think of og Doom.

The only weapon that I thought really lacked punch was the plasma rifle. It could have had a ton a bass that wasn't picked up through the stream but it sounded really weak.

Does anyone have a link to a download of the direct feed of the gameplay shown at the press conference? Everything I've found looks like it was captured through the stream and it's not as high quality as I'd like.

Is there any way to get access to the beta on pc at this point?

Short of beta key giveaways, which may or may not happen, your only chance is finding a first-run physical copy. For a short while after Wolf14's release, it was still possible to get beta access by purchasing the game digitally, I assume to match the fact that X1 owners with a preference for digital had to buy the game within a week of its release to be earmarked for the beta as XBL didn't support digital pre-orders at the time. Also, GMG was still selling through its pre-order keys well after release, but I would wager those have dried up.

Maybe I'm too much spoiled of Brutal Doom v20 (I really love it! It became my favorite Shooter of all time!) but the new one looks exactly what I was afraid Doom would be become.
It's a slow and boring console shooter without fund or anything interesting for me to play.
Shadow Warrior 2 is going to be my replacement Doom.

So, no Coop? :(

You can create co-op experiences with SnapMap, but no confirmation on campaign co-op.

It should be noted that the player speed in Doom 3 was increased for multiplayer, so there's a chance the player speed in Doom 4 is increased for multiplayer and SnapMap. Although I have no idea why that would be done. The change made sense for Doom 3, since the campaign was a survival-horror experience, whereas Doom 4 is an action game. No reason to have slower speed in the campaign.

Glad somebody else saw it. So annoying.

doom-the-cyberdemon.jpg

It's hard to pinpoint, but the frame is too distinctly... monstrous and unrecognisable. He looks too feral and dumb with his tounge hanging out. The Cyberdemon didn't need to get all up in your face. He clomped around at a leisurely pace, pumping you full of gib-inducing rockets. Also, they seem intent on making both the "Cyber" demon (looks like a rock elemental) and the Hell Knights look completely fremoved from the goat imagery, which I thought was the whole point of their creepiness. I remember vividly E1M9 of Doom running into the twin Hell Knights for the first time. That guttural roar, I shit myself. Not so with the bald, toothy weirdos from Doom 3 which unfortunately have found their way into Doom 4 as well.

Even the Revenant, whilst far and away the best, most recognisable design so far, looks goofy compared to its creepy original.

Look at these cold, empty eye sockets, offering no remorse or ground.

Now LOL GAIZ I RIP UR ARMS OFFFFF YEEEEAAAAH
Revenant.jpg

I think on both accounts it's the eyes. Less is more guys! And don't get me started on the zombies (what I THINK are zombies) and the imps. Completely awful and nondescript lumps of flesh.

Doom is a game that lives and dies on its enemy design. You play as a generic space marine, the enemies ARE the main cast. When you get to the credits at the end, the enemies are the principal "cast" of the game. They are diversed and varies, from warped versions of your own humanity, to lumbering behemoths that burst with blood and horrific personality.

Dang, the gore looks better in Brutal Doom than it does in new Doom. They should fix that up and also put in a classic mode that puts the gun in the middle of the screen.

Agreed. It also looks like a Zerg unit from Starcraft 2. Really hoping this isn't the final design.

I'm hoping since;

1) They seemed to have ripped the holographic Hell Knight model straight from Doom 3
2) All DooM games have had considerable enemy model changes before release

That this is the case.

Also worth mentioning that the gameplay they revealed at this E3 matches verbatim the description of closed impressions from Quakecon last year. I'm not saying they used the same gameplay, but who knows how much it's developed since then?

We still have a year to go, and I'm confident with how anxious they've been to get this right that they'll listen to criticism. I wasn't a huge fan of Doom 3's enemy design, but this legitimately looks worse.

It was the Wolfenstein: The New Order ROW Pre-Purchase key right? That's the one I got from GMG.

I mentioned that in the post he quoted. ;)

Which makes me quite glad that I bought the game on launch day after seeing the reviews were quite positive. Hell, I've often made the joke "I paid $60 for access to the DOOM beta and it just so happens to come with this really cool game called 'Wolfenstein: The New Order'."

First thing I'll make with the snapmap is probably the true sequel to Hell Revealed 2.

Then New Doom: In Name only.

I hope it's as truly unlimited as they claim. I need Doom, Doom II, and both episodes of Final Doom remade within the first year.

Remember that remake of Knee Deep in the Dead someone made for the Doom 3 engine? Such a tease.
