Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

Really glad I did not buy the second expansion! I will just sell my used copy Destiny now and then get this complete package when it comes out... and dropped a little in price! :)

There is an easy lesson to be learned here: NEVER buy digital. The value of a digital version drops to 0$ the moment you buy it!

Ridicoulous price for the expansion. The thing is, though if you get into the game you will play it for weeks and this represents value.

UPDATE 23/6/15 9.00am: Bungie has responded to fan debate surrounding the exclusive perks found in The Taken King's Collector's Edition with word of "something better" for veteran Destiny players.

Bungie community manager David "Deej" Dague has said that fans should expect details this Thursday in the developer's weekly Destiny blog update.

"Year One players won't get the same perks as people who buy a collector's edition," he told Forbes. "They'll get something better. Tune into the Weekly Update for more."

Thread worthy.

The shit posting about Destiny is amazing. IF the discussion is about the DLC then ok but its basically about how they haven't played in a year and got burned. Get over it. Let players enjoy it. Like going to a FIFA thread saying stop buying the yearly roster update. They'll fix the DLC item issue.

Amen.

I have a question about WoW and how it's expansions works.

I know that currently if you buy the base game you get all content except for the latest expansion correct?

But what if you bought the base game, didn't play it until some expansions came out, and then decided to hop right in. Do you have to buy all of the expansions individually at the 40 dollar price tag? How does that work?
You can do that or buy the latest expansion and get the others thrown in for free (or at least that was the case for me a few months back)

No the price is greatly reduced. The difference between their content and destiny's is that they had actual content which held its own. The level caps were extended, there was more zones and end game etc.

Man so glad I walked away from Destiny. Game seemed like a money grab at launch, and it just keeps on delivering on that one thing.

Especially funny with the post right above yours.

We don´t know what´s in the expansion yet - how should we know if it´s worth it?

Holy crap. He's basically saying "these crackheads will do everything we want so we don't even have to be nice to them. Just slap them one more time and take their money".

Well yeah, what else can he say?
He didn't need to defend the pricing to EG, he can just laugh at the interviewer and told him that sheep need to eat, and only the shepherd can provide their sheep with the proper nutrients that they think the sheep will need.

Honestly, I think the price is marked up correctly. Only a few will complain, but most of them will cave in and buy it either way.

You can always argue the subjective value of something's worth, but we have plenty of information regarding the game up until this point: this information points to a severe lack of content in their current and most likely subsequent releases.

So the latest expansion gives everything you don't have already? That seems reasonable. In this case it would mean I could spend 40 dollars and get the DLC I didn't buy since I only have the base game.

Yeah, content wise it isn't even comparable.

But the thing here is that it seems like if you don't have the DLC you are kinda forced to rebuy the base game too or have buy everything separated. I guess it's the problem with DLC that stopped your progress between expansions.

No?

Because he isnt the one making these decisions, and because it isnt cool.
He's being railed for his comments. And he's a big boy. If you are talking about a minor group crossing the line, then be specific to that, but most people here are just saying they are not happy with what he said.

Honestly, people already paid 40 bucks for two DLCs so we sort of have an idea of what to expect. It's just a matter of how many levels they'll ask you to run through backwards this time around.

I hate the word "share". "We will SHARE information regarding this or that later"...
Just as bad as "content", "exclusive", "first on..." and of course "pre-order/reserve yours today/blablabla". I can't stand this BS anymore.

Clearly. This stuff has to be taken seriously - ALWAYS

Yeah, a steam group has a lot of relevance to a console game. When something gets 5500+ comments on reddit, that's a grade A shitstorm. It doesn't help. I can assure you that nobody at Bungie is laughing about this little dust up. They've already had a tough enough time justifying the price of the expansion, now this.

This is true. They know they have a majority of destiny players by the balls at this point. There is no game like destiny on console right now. This is why they can be so bold like in the interview. Lets hope The Division shoves a boot down their throats soon. Remember folks, capitalism only works when there is adequate competition.

Something better?

So why didn't Luke just say that?

They might have just decided on doing it based on what's going on.

I can't tell if you were being sarcastic or not. Either way, that picture is an awful example as it is only up to the first 50 out of 800ish and like only 19 or so got it.

I´m 90% sure they don´t care at all about 5500 comments on reddit.

The game has been riding on a shit wave since release and it still did just fine.

Not ONCE since the game came out have I seen one post about Destiny that didn´t end in a shit storm.

Seriously, check YT, Facebook, NeoGAF or Reddit - it´s always like this.

I am pretty sure that the other pages were just like the first one. People just buy Call of Duty despite saying that they will never ever buy one again, peer pressure is too strong.

I was thinking the same during Gran Turismo 5 times. The name was too huge to het trumped by 0,01% of critical players in communities. Besides, GT5 sold 12M. No haterz can jeopardize that.

And then GT6 came with its sales.

Stop posting this goddam picture. It proves absolutely nothing. The group has more than 800members and around what, 20 are playing the game they said they'll boycott. Big effin deal.
Modern Warfare suffered extremely in PC with every inatallment having fewer players.
People did get fed up with Activision's bullshit in the end.

I get that peer pressure is a major thing. It is just that when that picture was first going around back then, I heard the opposite and how it wasn't all that many in said group that bought it. I could be wrong as I personally didn't take a look.

Yeah, it is a franchise. It might not hurt now, but do you want to take chances later?

Yes, MW2´s sales were abysmal.

I'm done with Destiny for good now.

Regretted buying it at all but to be fair I did get into it around lvl 20. Enough to get me to buy the expansions. Haven't bothered with the newest one.

There is no way I'm paying £40-55 for this new expansion. Why on earth should I need to buy the base game/expansions again just to play this bigger expansion? It's ridiculous.

I admit I fell into the Destiny hype but they ain't taking me for a ride any longer. I feel ashamed to have even bought the game. It's just a money grab and Bungie don't give a toss about their fanbase. Honestly, I think any one who keeps on playing this game and buys into whatever Bungie release is nothing but a complete fool. Alright you might find the game really enjoyable but have some self-respect.

Bungie has turned into such garbage. I regret buying the base game after how terrible it was and now this is even more ridiculous. This makes other companies blush with their lack of shame.

No, actually, that's not what they said. They are defending the price on the basis of the amount of content they are putting in.

The big problem is, they announced the price and did not announce much detail on the scope of the content. We have a sense that it's big, much bigger than the two prior expansions, but beyond that, we just don't know how to stack it up against the scope of the expansion. I'd have either announced a general list to help provide some sense of the scope (X strikes, Y MP maps/modes, Z story missions, etc), or held off on announcing the price until they felt more comfortable doing so.

Right now we're in this odd place where we know the price, but not the package that price entails, and so they have to defend it without being specific, which is rather awkward.

Considering the complaints of the original on lack of content, even if this has a lot of content (doubtful) it's a bad deal.

I have to say I feel pretty bad for lukems - I doubt his belief matches up with how he portrayed himself in that interview.

That said I am very glad I jumped off the destiny train a while ago. Someone else said it but Stockholm syndrome is what was keeping me and my friends playing

It's a shame because the core gameplay feels really good - if they invested time into content destiny would be brilliant but as it stands it's a game with great gameplay but so little content you can't enjoy it for very long

Yes, MW2´s sales were abysmal.
I mean, this is the most popular CoD game on Steam right now:
Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Multiplayer - Current players: 3,071 - Peak players: 8,177
PC gamers have stopped giving a shit about the franchise, precisely because they continued to ignore their needs.
(Advanced Warfare didn't even make the top 100 games)

i dropped Destiny when the first DLC came out because it seemed a little lackluster and the base game had IMO very little meaningful content (was fun to play though), so i don't really known what's going on. why does this DLC cost so much again? what about the season pass, if i had bought it i would get this too right? or.. no? wtf if not, what the hell is the point of a season pass if you don't get all the upcoming content lol. i thought that's what it is. and uhh can you just buy this DLC and not the previous ones, because i think i read that you can't, you'd also have to buy the earlier stuff if you want to play The Taken King DLC... that can't be right? yes? no?

so yea i'm confused. can i even play the base game anymore if i boot it up lol? i wouldn't be surprised if i'm locked out at this point, after what i've been reading.

The season pass was for the first 2 dlcs, which have been released. This is a new dlc.

You can still play the game, you just can't do any new stuff they add in.

Reading the interview again, I can't believe customers were told they would blindly throw money at the screen after seeing a few dancing emotes on video.

That's insane levels of arrogance and a real eye opener
into how Bungie/Activision see us as sheep with sheep-skin wallets just begging to splurge on any small bit of content.

Combined with how much I've had to deal with Destiny's
growing pains (even though gamplay is fun) since the Alpha,
I feel like I'm being treated like a proper mug.

Will pass on this expansion easily, even though I'm guaranteed to lock myself
out of many dailies, nightfalls and PvP by not buying in.

It's still a funny picture, because it's a true habit with many gamers :D complain very vocally about games and then buy it anyways and have fun. It's only four latte's worth of money at Starbucks.

I can assure you that nobody at Bungie is laughing about this little dust up. They've already had a tough enough time justifying the price of the expansion, now this.

And it's probably Activisions decision anyways which they are not allowed to go against or something in fear of losing their jobs :(

This needs to be in the op and bolded. I'm fucking disgusted, Activions' deed my ass, this is on Bungie as much as it is on the publisher. Luke Smith sounds like a "we've got them by the balls" shady pusher omg ahahah
Well it's up to the player if they want to rebuy shit for a fucking emote, and I have 0 sympathy for anyone even considering a £60 dance animation in an FPS...

But WOW at Luke's comments here, wtf was he thinking?

Wasn't like that the first few expansions... They gave stuff away for free after years of millions of people paying $15 a month.

Anyway, $40 is all I'm spending, I will get my money's worth and more... And I know that will make people furious. I love that.
