Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

You have clearly offended the RNGesus.

It's just the way RNG goes, some folks shard Gjallerhorn/Fatebringer/Hawkmoon for yucks and giggles because they have so many and some of us weep in the corner ;)
I literally got my 8th Gjallarhorn yesterday. It feels bad sharding them.

Sounds about right. I finally got a Gally two weeks ago.

Week 1 I went 9-0 thrice, did all PoE thrice (inc. Skolas) -- and I got lucky with getting the chest armour from Judgement's Chance... By week 2 I upgraded EVERY legendary weapon and armour I had left.

Week 3 I stopped switching to my other characters lol.

Week 1 was madness though. I did Skolas like 22 times. Took a LV32 through and we beat him first try. Had to explain go the girl the strat and we were off.

Now Skolas is even easier, think about that...

Damn, I haven't even attempted Skolas yet, we are stuck on 34 (one in grp is still lvl 33 to be fair and needs more weaps).

Isn't this week Urrox though? Like, a Hunter can easily solo through up until the boss, and then the boss is one of the easiest in the game at LV33...

To be more precise, your Invis Hunter should be dismantling all of the mines in Round 4 that are mid and far (from where you should be fighting Urrox if that makes sense). Just make sure you don't have him run around the middle at the start of the wave, otherwise he spawns more enemies.

For Round 5 Urrox, everyone should just stay on that side and uh, merk him?

Best part of HoW though was me trying to get Celestial Nighthawk from Xur. Cost me 800 Motes of Light. I still have a total of 55 Exotic Shards now and I don't do Nightfalls anymore lol.

I managed to get 2! of every helmet before it finally dropped for me.

My Matador 64 took a great many roles to get that I wanted. Rangefinder, Rifled Barrel, (and I think Kneepads?) in Void. My Wolves' Bane came out perfect the first time it dropped with both Counterbalance and Rangefinder, and I think Small Bore/Rifled Barrel, so it's basically a better range Jolder's with like, 2 less bullets? haha -- I use the ToO arm piece so it has faster reloads too. Always nice to have.

I may be going crazy, but wasn't the pre-order digital version exclusive to existing owners of Destiny + DLC I & II listed for £27.99 when TTK got announced? The one that's listed at £39.99 now?

I thought that too. I thought I was going mad but we can't both have imagined it.

You guys are right, it was listed for that price. Why it was increased is anybody's guess.

New skolas is not easier than solar burns skolas. Also you burned yourself out. Running Poe 35 22 times in a week is madness. You probably put in 60 hours in one week.

As I thought you play an absolute crap ton. I play very often and the most motes of light I've ever had was 400.

I have no etheric light yet. How are you drowning in it??
Trials of Osiris rewards hands them out like candy.

Well folks this is the new gaming era where devs can royally screw you with multi-player games with no story campaign and DLC at near full price.

Let's face it this is how it's going because it's what gamers are buying.

As a gamer that enjoys a crafted single player story campaigns first and foremost, it's sad to see how the landscape is changing.

Thanks for the tips. Me and my small group of friends have 33 on farm but kept getting stuck at the 34 boss and they're not the type who will want to spend hours wiping. It's probably a combination of gear check, tactics and skill.

Sons of bitches.

Trials of Osiris rewards hands them out like candy.

That's a shame, I can't stand/am very poor at PvP :(

This game has done nothing since release but make me angry...

Yet it's hard to ignore it's existence, since they advertise it everywhere!
Regret every euro I paid for it on it's launch!

I've just gone back and did exactly what I did before, trying to buy through the Bungie website which takes you to the Xbox storefront and it is showing for £39.99. I know it was £27 before - I was pleasantly surprised at the time. I wish I pulled the trigger then. How the fuck can they put the price up?

Somewhat related...I see the Digital Collector's Edition is $79.99 on PSN, but $99.99 on the Xbox store. Can anyone explain the difference in price? I'm in Canada for what its worth.

It's true. Everything is saved on their servers. Nothing is locally stored except for the game/DLC/patches

Yeah I've had some fun times swapping disks on PS4 and troubleshooting suspend so yeah even if you don't sync cloud saves Destiny knows what you have, it's all server side

Not to hammer on Luke Smith but just came across this choice quote from him during the 1Up Yours podcast from May 10th, 2006:

Don't support the tyranny and the bullshit that is buying the same game eight times in a row, you retards.

This was during a discussion about the Virtual Console but I think it's fitting here. Listening to these old podcasts and having this whole Destiny mess happen at the same time really drives home how much he's changed. He's almost literally become what he hated. Either that or (the most likely scenario) Bungie has no say in any of this and are just toeing the line.

In either case, nobody comes out of this mess looking good.

The alternative is that he is the creative director of a game and has zero capacity to answer the question of pricing until given the PR sanctioned statement. Bungie doesn't even set the price. Knowing how he talks, and what he sounds like, the entire interview came across as him playfully avoiding giving an answer, probably because he can't give one.

I followed a lot of the E3 interviews, and he was surprisingly great about talking about how they'd like to do better, and that he understands player complaints first hand. The big shame is that we probably won't get any more of him talking so candidly after what happened.

yep, knowing Luke for years (not personally of course) makes it clear that it looks much worse on paper than what it actually is. He showed up to talk about the expansion's content (which looks awesome) but instead had to talk about the expansion's pricing model (which happens to be atrocious).

He was refreshingly candid in acknowledging the issues but there was no sense that he had any answers. They really need to start equipping folks with answers for these interviews because it was damn awkward listening to him not address any of it. To be clear I think the Luke Smith hate is out of hand, to me he seems like someone trying to dance their way out of a question and failing. That always looks bad but the reason he had to dance is that Bungie won't let him offer any substantial answers.

Pretty sure you wouldn't lose your progress. Haven't tested that though. And probably cheaper going forward to just buy the CE edition on the U.S. store now and go from there if you are going to keep playing destiny.

Really I just was posting the advice, in general, in case people didn't know. Not necessarily Destiny only.

Hmmmm I may try this then.

If I can keep my progress that's all I'm bothered about really.

I guess I'll need to buy PSN cards off of eBay? Or will PayPal work now as that's an international system?

Surely they can't be that hard to get still. I see them ALL the time, especially in PVP.

Fun fact: The Gjallerhorn was the very first exotic I ever got, about 2-3 weeks after the game launched.

How is this the same as the Virtual Console? We're talking about repackaged ROMs with a giant built-in profit margin versus an entirely optional Collector's Edition package that nobody has to buy.

As noted before, Luke to my recollection never complained about the WoW Collector's Editions.

In fairness, WOW collector's editions don't charge you for content you already own.

So you would prefer it if The Taken King Collector's Edition cost $80 and did not include the base game or previous expansions?

WoW CE expansions were $80?

Edit:I guess the CEs were. Jesus Christ, Blizzard fleeced the fuck out of some people.

Yea, here's the biggest problem. If you take out the stuff you own, what do you charge for it? If you take it out, then that means the people just starting have no option to get the CE either, because it wouldn't come with the first year content.

You have a CE upgrade pack. That's how you solve it. People who already own the content get a huge discount because they already bought it.

I have little doubt the CE stuff will eventually be able to be bought by other means. But you already have people saying they're gonna quit the game if there's MTX, so I'm not sure there's a way to please everyone here.

I would prefer if there was a 50/60 dollar digital tier that included just the taken king and CE content.

I don't think 80 dollars is unreasonable for the physical CE, really. It's the digital CE that is taking the piss.

Edit: also I assume with the physical version you could just eBay the codes for the year one content and get some cash back.

I've played a ton of Destiny...probably more than I should have, and for the most part, I've probably gotten my money's worth despite having all kinds of issues with the game at its various stages. Perhaps the simplest measure of my dedication to the game: Three Gallys.

But there's no way in hell I'm paying $40 for an expansion pack. Nope.

I'll be spending that money on Fallout or Batman or some other game that doesn't constantly insult my intelligence or prey on my loyalty.

Bungie have gone in such an odd direction since they split with Microsoft. I used to love them so much during the Halo days, I got such a strong community feeling from them; the blog posts, Bungie day events, podcast, vidocs for behind the scenes looks at stuff.

I could list quite a few names of the people working on my favourite games, unlike some other games I liked that were just made by nameless people at a company I didn't feel like I had a connection with. Now they are all over the place. It's a shame really.

Not sure if I missed the memo but I feel like Destiny was falsely advertised. I expected an epic coop experience with my hero going to all these planets on this epic quest. However its juts a repetitive grinding game with no story, which I have zero interest in. I wouldn't mind so much if the PVP was halo like, but its this boring experience with uninteresting small maps.

Great graphics, art design, music and gunplay but thats it unfortunately for me.

I and many of my PSN friends have put a ton of hours into the game, yet we find ourselves asking why that is all the time. I will have to wait and see when TTK comes out, but I've been leaning towards moving away from the game for good once I collect all of the ToO gear.

Isn't the Batman season pass $40?

Well, after all that shit they pulled this week, the icing on the cake would be a condescending, pretentious blog post by DeeJ in which he uses several hundred words to say absolutely nothing. As always.

I was away on vacay during E3 and blabla,

catchhing up to all this news of TTK and Redbull ect...

Hello Star Wars Battlefront, goodbye Destiny

No no no! Not nothing. He'll use it to completely ignore the complaints and explain that we get these:

Stuff we already know about.

I'm sure this has been asked an answered but is there not a way to just preorder the Taken King for $40 or is the standalone not going to become available until it launches?

They really fucked up the base Destiny launcher on PS4. It has a new Taken King logo a countdown timer until release, and a download button instead of the normal 'Start' button.
