Gay marriage salt thread

I will never understand why people put so much faith in the Bible. Even if there is a God, what makes so many Christians believe that anything in the Bible is accurate? You are putting all of you faith in the hands of something humans wrote a long time ago. How can you be so sure that it was God who came up with those words and not some who believed he was talking for him?

One of the many reasons I am not a christian anymore. Mental health wasn't even a concept back then, how many of these people writing these books were untreated schizophrenics or someone another disorder

No to mention you could make the argument that homosexuality serves a purpose of population control. If a certain % of humanity doesn't reproduce it lowers the exponential rate of population growth, and I'm talking about since the beginning of civilization. Think about it.

I remember reading research about this, every other child a woman has, has more chance of being homosexual than the previous one.

Definitely sounds like population control from mother nature to me.

Another idiotic view. Gay people are gay, not allowing them to get married does not suddenly stop them from being gay. Also, we're not obligated, not any one of us, to have children.

And that's ignoring the fact that many gay couples are becoming families having children in many different ways.

Yes I understand, I was just providing another "scientific" point of view regarding the subject. What I stated is taught in college level Biology- reproduction being the ultimate goal. At least that's what's taught here in the United States.

Jesus may be restricting marriage to opposite-sex couples when he cites Genesis during a discussion of marriage (Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9).

NIV version:

Matthew 19:4-6New International Version (NIV)

4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Mark 10:6-9New International Version (NIV)

6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Jesus was answering the question of Matthew 19:3 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” The question refers to a man divorcing his wife, so that would be a good indication that Jesus will speak of men & women in his answer, This is no way implies that marriage is limited to only a male & female pairing.

Sounds like a theory rather than a "goal" we have the ability to reproduce, the ability. Just like every other living mammal.

A counter-argument of why some people may think a certain way.
You do realize that those opposed to homosexuality in general and marriage equality in particular usually have a, let's say, strained relationship to evolution and biology?

So your "counter-argument" isn't all that, I'm afraid.

Sorry the opinion that homosexuality is a sin is not some benign opinion. It hurts so many kids perceptions of themselves and makes them feel like something is horribly wrong with themselves. If you actually express that opinion I don't see that as any better than people fighting against gay marriage

I want to re-iterate this. It's so important for people to know how much damage they inflict to their children, family, and friends when you tell those people you hold dear that you should not expect love if you are attracted to same-sex. This is fucking bullshit. Many people have suffered and suicide because of it. You ARE the reason why these people felt miserable.

Show what you really know about biology.

Which is nothing.

Jesus didn't include the gays, so it's totes wrong.

Jesus also never said cars and electricity are okay, so those are totes wrong too, btw.

(Paul is the jackass that talked about homosexuality in his letters to the churches.)

I'm sure no one will care about this, but meh, I"ma post it it anyway.

To start, I'm a big ol' gay. Totally gay, and, for some reason, I spent several years pre-ministry, until I opened my eyes and realized that I couldn't dedicate my life to a bunch of myths copied from far older traditions.

About Jesus including the gays, you need to keep going in Matthew 19.

10. His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

11. But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

12. For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

Jesus is telling his disciples which men should not marry women. The important aspect is the first group "eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb." This passage is not, in fact, referring to men without reproductive organs. The word eunuch here is actually m’haym-na. This word can mean something close to man of the woman. It refers to a "trusted one." These are typically the words associated with an effeminate man, the Biblical times caricature of what it means to be gay.

Notice, Jesus said that these m’haym-na were born this way, from their mother's womb.

The term is used again in Acts 8.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
j

I emphasized two different words, the use of eunuch again, as well as the fact that he went to the temple to worship.

Had he been a castrated male, he would not have been allowed to worship in the temple. However, it appears as though he was, as he went to Jerusalem for that purpose. I also think it's interesting that Phillip didn't tell him he had to renounce his status as a eunuch to become a believer. It seems as though the Holy Spirit didn't have an issue with the man, and didn't seem to feel the need to bring up Leviticus or whatever other verse supposedly deals with us evil homosexuals.

It's also important to note that the Ethiopian here was reading what we now know as Isaiah 53. My favorite passage in that chapter is verse 3:
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Which pretty much sums up the way I've been treated by some in society for quite a long time. I know a lot of other LGBT people feel the same way.

Edit:

Oh and Jesus talking about cleaving to a wife is borrowed from Genesis 2:14. You know where else the Bible talks about "cleaving" to someone? Ruth 1:14. Ruth is cleaving to Naomi. You know...another woman.

And we can always go into David and Jonathan. The mental leaps required to not infer the two of them were gay always makes me chuckle.

I've never been in a biology class that made the mistake of saying that biology had an "ultimate goal" (or any goal at all) during my undergraduate studies in biology, but maybe things are taught differently at other schools.

Uh, that doesn't really sound like college level biology. Anyway, at the individual level this isn't always true (that having offspring is the ultimate goal), it's more about the propagation of genes. There can be other factors at play such as kin selection for example.

On a saltless note from a Christian and a conservative, I personally do not agree with homosexuality in the same sense that I disagree with other sins according to The Bible. There is no special place of hate in my heart for gays as I have gay friends and family, I simply follow my theistic moral values ahead of whatever social movements reach popular opinion that are not compatible with them.

I also understand that a secular government cannot legislate religion and really forcing religion on people dilutes the sincerity by which people embrace it. I wish all people well while at the same time wish that all people would come to Christianity and embrace the life model set out for us by Jesus.

My only concern with modern liberalism is that it can be quite militant and as intolerant as any other militant ideology when faced with opposing dialogue regardless of how sensitive the other person is to the individual perspectives each of us has arrived to on our own.

As long as religious organizations are not strong armed by the state to go against the foundation of their practice and perform same sex marriages in their houses of worship when there are plenty of other venues available for gay couple to marry that aren't in opposition morally to their lifestyle, I see no need for an uproar over the legality of the ruling from a secular perspective of a diverse nation.

"I even have gay friends!"

You in danger girl.gif.

Also, militant liberals are intolerant? Glass houses, stones, etc.

In Biology, it is also taught that the ultimate goal of a species is reproduction- to pass on genes to the next generation and ensure that species' does not go extinct. It is not so farfetched to think why other people may have deferring opinions.

99% of the time the reason people have sex is for pleasure. The primary reason for having sex is to fulfill your sexual desire or sexual appetite. Procreation is secondary. People don't think, "I want to have a kid so I can help add to the population." The majority of time it is for the pleasure of having a kid. Even though pleasure is the primary reason for sex, there will always be newborns that go with it from time to time. Helping the population is just an added benefit that goes along with wanting or accidentallyhaving kids. So, you believe if a person chooses not to have kids they are unnatural?

90 - 95% is heterosexual, which means we are way, way, closer to a 100% straight society, so it's quite absurd to worry about our species going extinct. Not everyone has to procreate in order for a species to survive. Since, this is true, there is no reason Mother Nature can't have homosexuality. If reproduction was the ultimate goal of all members of a species, then there wouldn't be a choice in the matter, it would be mandatory. Everyone would go through reproduction stages, just like everyone goes through puberty.

The universe is filled with many different variables and opposites. There are two sexes (male & female) two genders,(masculine & feminine), there is right-handed & left-handed, there are multiple {eye colors, hair colors, skin colors...etc} why would there be only one natural sexual orientation? It would be odd for there not to be a naturally intended opposite for heterosexuality

T
7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”[/i] [more on why you could divorce here]

8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”

11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

In this context, wouldn't living like a eunuch be a reference to not fucking women? So, being like a monk, for the sake of God. Not necessarily because you want to fuck a guy, but rather that you're not interested in fucking women?

&, in the context of this is the situation, aren't the disciples asking that, if you can't divorce your wife for not being pleasing to you, it's better to not marry at all and have to deal with your wife?

So Jesus says, not every man is born without sexual urges towards women, but those that can should accept it (not be married to a woman).

(My own thoughts, not any church sanctified stuff.)

Gays were, historically, classed with eunuchs. So, I think that Jesus was referring to three different types of eunuchs when discussing which ones shouldn't marry women:

1) Those that are born that way. (i.e. Gays, and I suppose lesbians, but the male dominated focus of the gospel narrative makes it hard to infer that).

2) Those that are physically made eunuchs, in the literal sense (Snip, snip).

3) Those that believe that marriage would interfere with their ability to serve God.

Jesus prefaces his explanation by saying that what he's about to say doesn't refer to all men. And, I think anyone would agree with that--not all men should marry other men. Only those who are born that way a la Lady Gaga.

Also, there's Isaiah 56 which is interesting as well.

4 For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;

5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.

God is talking about what will happen after He provides the sacrifice that was needed (Isaiah 53). He says that He'll "save" eunuchs (which we know include gays, I'm less convinced on lesbians simply because of my aforementioned qualms with the overt patriarchy in the Bible), yet never mentions they have to turn away from their supposed "sin."

Of course, we can sweep all this under the rug with all the other mental loopholes some have to jump through to rationalize some behaviors as "okay" and others as "sin."

While Friday’s decision by the Supreme Court is tragic, it is ultimately irrelevant. Regardless of what the Supreme Court justices declared Friday, the Judge of all of the universe has already issued His decision: marriage should be reserved for one man and one woman. And there is no appealing that verdict.

Well, thank God for the separation of church and state then.

It is sad to see what some human are even thinking.

Seriously. I am catholic and I support gay marriage. American christianity is so fucked up.
What does it change for those people personally now? Before they couldnt get married, now they can. I dont really get why so many people are hating on that. It does not affect any of them in their personal life.

Why are people taking the bible literally? I mean no theologian (and you usually need to be one to become a priest at least in Germany) is doing that, so why are people doing it?

Ok I lied, this is actually getting to me now. The sheer amount of fuckery I am seeing on Facebook is staggering. My problem is that I buy and collect horror props, and all the best artists (my friends) are posting DISGRACEFUL, HATEFUL shit. Even actors from my beloved films are posting hateful shit.

I'd flush these assholes to high heavens, but fuck I don't know what to do. I mean, these props are my hobby and I can't tell the artists to fuck off...Shit I am stuck and I don't know what to do, One of my close friends is gay, and I know of all the crap she had to go through in life. I am feeling like an asshole for even being Facebook friends with these clowns, and an hypocrite for being afraid to remove them.

You don't have to agree with people's political and moral standards to participate in commerce with them. Besides, gay marriage is a constitutionally protected right, it's not like the money you give them can go to fighting marriage equality!

Who?

Many of them. The two most painful for me are two actors from one of the biggest horror franchises ever. I actually saw the first film with the director, in theatres not even a year ago.

Seeing the (usually brilliant and gentle) main actress of one of the coolest eighties slashers sequels post stuff about how pro-gays shouldn't target right wingers but "Muslims" because they are the enemies at the doors, is down-right fucking awkward. And my favorite actor portraying a legendary slasher (my favorite onscreen version of the character), linking stuff that says that the College of Pediatricians saying that this is "A tragic day for America" and shit...

thats my view. Good to see another christian onboard :)

I dont really get why people hate on such people. One of the cornerstones of christianity is Charity, not hate.
That is why I am always wondering what priest in America (and it seems also in South-East asia from what I heard) are telling their community.

I mean if you believe in God, you think he would punish gay people and praise you because you hated on them and tried to take away their rights? It just doesnt make any sense to me.
And especially now I dont get it. Marriage isnt a christian principle. Whether two people marry doesnt really affect any other people.

Another thing I noticed is that a lot of black people want to take away the rights of gay people. From some of the YT Videos I saw here, I can see some black people hating on gay people and I dont understand that. 40-50 years ago you didnt have much rights in America and people fought for it. Just seems so unreal to see that.

Uh, A Christian preaching intolerance isn't simply an American or South-East Asia thing. Not even close.

I am aware of that. There are a lot of those in eastern europe too. Some in GB etc.
it just seems the loudest ones are in America.

Or maybe thats just because the internet makes it look like that. I can only compare it to germany, but it seems that the catholicism/christianity here in Germany is different from the American one, who has priests who never studied theology and take the bible literally.

So I went to my wife's church yesterday and saw a notice saying, "Pray that Australia does not allow homosexual people to marry." I was pretty appalled.

We have a lot more different denominations than most other countries. Our Christian community is highly diverse. I actually think those who preach intolerance for gays are a really loud vocal minority. Biblical literalism has been on decline in the United States for almost a century, and really only holds out in rural communities where the religious and ethnic makeup is highly homogenized.

Isn't the pleasure and urge to have sex there to encourage procreation?

Encourage? yes, but again not mandatory. And again, the vast majority of time, two people have sex with one another, they're not trying to make a kid. Nature's goal is to have a part of the population of a species procreate, not all of the population of a species, because it doesn't need all of that species to procreate for that species to continue.

Fine
Andrew Bryniarski and Caroline Williams. James Woods on Twitter too. My favorite vampire hunter ever goddamn T_T
I love these three on screen, but goddamn.

Yeah, I saw James Woods' bigoty bullshit. It's a shame to see a talented, washed-up has-been slip even further out of the mainstream.
