I'll never forgive Ono for getting my hopes up.
I don't think I am. What tournaments are even in Japan? I know there was Choukaigi/Tokaigi and KVO. Choukaigi and Tokaigi were official Nintendo tournaments or nico nico tournaments. How many viewers did KVO get for Smash? Console tournaments as a whole are rare in Japan because venues are expensive and there isn't a lot of TOs out in Japan. The ones that exist are the fg players that went out to US tournaments. KSK is one of those. Dogura with the mixupnightmonday crew is one of those. Then there are a lot of TOs that organize with the arcades like akajojo, gama (rip), kagecchi, etc... which doesn't take as much work as getting a lot of consoles, monitors, and renting out venues. US as a whole just has so many people willing to organize tournaments compared to Japan. It's also harder as there is no prize pots to be won in Japan unless the developer or some company puts in a lot of money.
I know Smash is huge in Japan, but I'm talking about competitively.
Like I said, I don't disagree with all of this. You asked me a question and I answered sincerely of what I believed MrWizard was thinking when he made his decision.*sigh*
I think by comparing me to him you don't understand what my actual qualm with this is.
We've had this conversation before. By catering to the old games you prevent new games from growing. I would feel exactly the same way if Street Fighter 4 were in Marvel 3's position. You prevent them from people capturing their potential hype moments and you prevent them from creating their own storylines. Ultrachen this week was just depressed over the fact that not every game can be big like street fighter. They were hoping MKX and GGxrd would have decent shots. Their shots are now. MKX especially, since there's great potential to bring new people to this community with that game.
You have it backwards. It isn't go with true and trusted Marvel 3 and ignore the other games because they're hot phases. Those games have the potential to create their own legacies, but it can only be done right now. Marvel 3 isn't dead and isn't going anywhere. But it is never going to grow. You're showing it now by outlining how many years it has left. Also, it's hilarious that people are tweeting #marvelisn'tdead when I think out of all the games of the lineup, barring SF4, it's the game that needs exposure the least to keep itself afloat.
Essentially, it is much like what the Melee community will eventually do to Smash 4, despite Smash 4 being a good game in its own right. Killing the newer game, because you prefer the old game. At least Melee is growing.
800+ is still an absolutelygoodgreat tourney entrant number for a game that hasn't had any patches or updates in a long time. I would be playing MvC3 if it had a patch to fix character balancing and better netcode. But knowing Capcom, they would probably have made things even worse with a patch.
I'm a Rico fanboy because that's a homie of mine but you're about right. Strider had the complicated option selects and the overall tech on tap while Rico is a dude who just relied on footsies and good reads which only gets you so far like you said. But also strider picked up Makoto and Yang since Super before coming back to Able in Ultra.Rico doesn't play the game much. He relies on just having good reads. That can only get you so far.
And I don't think he was ever the best Abel. Strider just doesn't live in a place with a weekly stream.
exactly, you don't even know the scene yet you act like you do
the monthly Umebura tournaments draw 150+ fairly consistently, and there are other regions that have large tourneys albeit less frequently
DARK HENRY CEN RIS-
KOTop 3 for each game gets gold sticks too.
Looks like it's a monthly tournament with 100 players. It had 195 players at the end of 2014.
Did you only look at the A bracket? There's a B bracket too.
Umebura 16: 96+66=162
Umebura 15: 96+87=183
Umebura 14: 64+80=144
Umebura 13: 64+96=160
and so on

Is there another VxG this year?
This is important for future threads.
DA BEECH
Just curious, wasn't that the tourney where the whole collusion drama got started? That wasn't the only thing that killed it though, right?
You guys remember when Ryder was the best Abel player in North America?
Didn't Da Beech also help create that whole mess Jaxel was involved with?
Dat Jaxel thing was wowI remember that's how I first came across FGW. The drama was real.

I don't touch GAF Smash threads, they're really tough to go through. Smashboards have arguments at times for superior aspects of the game, but they're mostly users of a competitive mindset. Here, it's a mix of casual and competitive in a single thread and things go bad.

Does Mike Ross still compete in tourneys? Recently, I see him more on commentary, interviewing people, and CCTV.
