So you're saying it's 2spoopy4kids?

I don't understand your order here.

BVS should easily hit Avengers numbers unless it sucks like MOS.

Comparing this movie to Marvels Phase 1 movies Numbers would be ridiculous. 700M+ should be the new standard for a successful movie given the budgets of these movies nowadays.
The post specifically asked if a DC movie could top a Marvel movie at the BO.
Dark Knight & Rises are literally above anything besides Avengers and Iron Man 3(which at that point was the only Avenger that really mattered)

I got no problem with Lex's red capes line. He appears to be drinking, and even sounds a little tipsy. He's probably getting drunk with the Senator, talking all big being like, "Shit, I got this. Just watch."

I have no idea how well this film will do but 1 billion is hardly a lock. Superman isn't a mega-draw, post-Nolan Batman is a question mark, and moving it to March wasn't exactly a sign of confidence from WB. Hell, 300 million domestic isn't even a lock given Man of Steel's performance.

what is it

"The Red Coats" was a nickname for the British Soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

When Paul Revere warned of the British Soldiers arriving, he's commonly said to have shouted either "The British are coming! The British are coming!" or "The Redcoats are coming! The Redcoats are coming!"

No, everything has to somehow trace back to Jason Todd and the Red Hood somehow, because he has, sometime in the last 5 years, become the archnemesis for Batman.

Nah, it's just he needs to be introduced somehow, else we'll never get a Red Hood and Arsenal / Outlaws movie. Which I kind of need in my veins, ok.

I'll be honest, being from outside the US, the "red capes are coming" line made no sense to me until you guys explained it.

I'm actually surprised at this. I'm not American and I knew exactly what it was, but that's because plenty of American pop culture has referenced it enough.

Setting up Lex as a modern-day Revere warning society of the coming danger these beings will pose to humanity's potential and ambition?

We can only hope

Or it could just be they lost a good guy. I doubt they'd pass the chance for Red Hood to be introduced somewhere instead of having him already exist.

Good point. Though I do like that this Batman has been active for over 2 decades allowing for stories to be told without audiences saying "well Superman would have fixed this in seconds".

Could also allude to Harvey Dent.

That would make sense.

This is great lol. The blind fanboy equivalent of "NO U". Embarrassing.

if it was a bad movie maybe it would garner as much attention as MOS has. Strange it hasn't, does the movie have issues? Sure it does, all movies do. Do those issues scream so loudly that they completely over shadow the entire movie? No, not by along shot. All you ever hear as a complaint is AOU sucks. Real in depth criticism there. Quips!!!! Oh no! Jokes!!! This movie sucks.

MOS, TDKR have endless complaints from people. You know why? Because the scripts are terrible and even worse they are executed poorly.

I get move excited for Marvel movies for sure and I probably give them a bit more leeway. I've made my negative thoughts on Thor2 known. Thor is my all time favourite superhero so their is no blind fanboy ism on my part. Captain America is my 2nd, I've got plenty of issues with his first movie. If I as a fan can find fault with my two favourite characters movies why can't some of you DC fanboys admit that maybe Nolan phoned in TDKR or Snyder/Goyer dropped the ball with MOS? That's Blind Fanboyism there.

This trailer looks great and I hope beyond hope that it's a fucking thrill ride.

And yet people say it's a dumb line....so many reactionary statements, ah well.
I feel like this Luthor will be all intellect and manipulation and maybe go the All Star route once he gets arrested at the end of BvS or whatever.

It won't be crazy long, that could kill the film honestly. I'm guessing around 2h 10 putting it between Furious 7 and Jurassic World. We have to remember certain scenes could be opening montage/history refresher.
Man of Steel was about 2h 30 minutes, there's not a chance in hell this is shorter than that in my opinion.

Warner isn't scared of long movies so I can see this being almost 3 hours.

There is no way this is gonna make less than Man of Steel unless it is truly dreadful.

I disagree with almost all of this, but I think that most people care about Batman not necessarily "Nolan's Batman"

And we've been around long enough for a transition to a new Batman not to mean much to many people.

He is still a huge icon that many will check out. It will have a really solid opening weekend. And then will probably be down to word of mouth.

And moving it to March may help it out, doesn't really have much competition in either direction.

Divergent 3 is the week before, and that's w/e at the box office.

And I guess the next major title is the Jungle Book 3 weeks later.

I actually read it the opposite

As much as I dislike the constant MoS discussions, it's a movie that has stayed with people for 2 + years.

AoU isn't even a movie really being discussed this summer.

It's better to be bad than forgotten.

But that's me

As long as we don't get another land investment scheme like the Lex in Superman '78 and Returns, I'll be happy

Experimenting on Zod's body and orchestrating things behind the scenes fits perfectly with Lex's portrayal in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel

Lex being portrayed as a paul revere rings true with his statement about Devils dont come from underneath but from the sky and maybe that scene with Kryptonite is his intellect creating the kryptonite as a way to weaken superman

Even if it does better than Man of Steel, which I agree is a certainty given MoS' underperformance, there's still quite a bit of room between 650m and 1 billion. BO-wise, I just don't trust anything with regards to the public's interest in this franchise and I definitely don't trust anything with Snyder at the helm—for a guy who's movies are basically trailer porn, 300 is the last film in his filmography that I'd consider a true hit that met or exceeded box office expectations.

A big red flag for me is Man of Steel's terrible legs. That's rarely a good sign when it comes to projecting for sequels.

It's not supposed to make sense until you actually watch the movie. It's like some people in this thread have never seen a trailer before.

I think it's due to the last decade or two of so many trailers spelling out the entire movie for them. It's like people being conditioned.

March/April is a good release date for the film. Typically blockbusters can dominate all the way up to May with no competition.

There's a scene in the trailer where it looks like a LexCorp building is on alert or under attack

Could that be tied to the rumor where
Batman breaks into LexCorp to steal Kryptonite? Or maybe that's when Zod-Doomsday gets loose?

I agree (and Snyder movies seem to get released in March a lot—hell, 300 basically invented March as a month where people went to see big budget movies), I just think it's telling that WB admitted that Captain America (even before it morphed into basically another Avengers film with Civil War) is a bigger draw than the two most iconic superheroes in their stable.

At the end of the day, a huge part of how well it does at the box office will depend on the simple question of: well, is it any good? I err on the side of caution, both because I don't have much faith in Snyder, but also because I think people underestimate how low the floor is with a movie like this. Man of Steel really didn't do a whole lot better than Superman Returns, a film that was so underwhelming at the box-office, they ended up rebooting the whole franchise.

MoS made almost $300mil more....

I think Warner (and if not them, Marvel) recognized it's best for their bottom line not to cannibalize each other's sales.

There's only so many screens that you can show a movie on at once.

And Warner needs this to be a mega-hit more than Marvel might need Civil War to be

I was mainly talking about domestic - which I actually thought was over 300 for MoS for some reason. It is rather close though, which in my mind almost guarantees 300. Good point about the legs though, as I didn't know about that.

I would agree however that 1 billion is far from a lock. A great film will most likely be needed to push it much further than simple bat-legs can.

MoS made almost $300mil more....

Eh, these days, anything with a budget of 200m will automatically make ~300m overseas given the explosion of the international box office lately. Fucking Terminator Genisys (!!!) is probably going to finish with 300m overseas. Furious 7 made 400m in China! etc. Returns did really badly overseas, but Man of Steel did pretty badly—by today's standards—overseas too. For some reason, the DC heroes just have not been able to get a foothold in the international market—even the Nolan movies didn't do as well overseas as their huge domestic grosses would have suggested.

Domestically, they're not as far apart as they might seem either, mainly thanks to 3D and a strong opening. MoS did better, but only barely.

If this doesn't make 1 billion the next time you'll see Zack Snyder he'll be making your sandwich at Subway.

He'd have to fuck something up royally. This is Batman v Superman. This isn't like the Avengers where you need to long sell; seeing the logo will get people into cinemas.

It's not so far off from how Justice League: Unlimited handled him where
Doomsday is created from Superman's DNA by the government, mutated, and conditioned to completely hate Superman.

It's also how
Luthor made the New 52, pre-Convergence, Bizarro. It was a failed Superman clone.

I saw your edit! :P

And Warner needs this to be a mega-hit more than Marvel might need Civil War to be

Certainly, but is there even the slightest doubt that Civil War (AKA Avengers 2.5) will be absolutely massive?

And for the record, I'd predict BvS to break a billion worldwide without much difficulty at all.
