I never got this line in the original. I assume it was poorly translated...

I'd be okay with straight rippin that system into Shenmue 3.

As would I.

Will quote myself from Shenmue Dojo.

From SMT WIKI

"A bond made with another person. Getting to know others is the key to strengthening your Personas."
—Persona 3 FES Dictionary Entry

Social Links, known as Community (コミュニティ?) in the Japanese versions and often abbreviated as "Commu" (コミュ?), are an important gameplay mechanic that appears in the later Persona games. Each Social Link represents a single Arcana, and raising a particular Social Link increases the experience bonus the protagonists receive when they fuse personas of that Arcana. By completing a Social Link, it unlocks the ultimate persona of that Arcana. Social Links can, however, be reversed if players do not spend time with the respective people holding the Link, end up booking two holiday invitations on one day, or gave an improper answer during their conversations. The reverse effect will also continue to last until the protagonist reconciles with them. At some point a Social Link can even be broken, prohibiting the protagonist from fusing personas from the respective Arcana.

Replace Persona with Moveset, and Arcana with Martial Arts and I think social links would be a great fit for Shenmue.

For those that don't know, the way it works is you can build relationships with characters, and the stronger the relationship becomes the more advantage you have in creating and fighting with Personas. These relationships can be reversed if you do something to upset the NPC, preventing your friendship and your skills from becoming any stronger.

I think in addition to having a training area, and buying move sets, a social link system would be a great fit for the series, especially because it demonstrates the dark and light struggle in which Ryo constantly has to face. Should he forgo everyone and everything solely to enact revenge upon Lan Di? Or should he build up friendships and life long lasting relationships on his quest to enlightenment and peace.

Now, you may say this is a crazy idea but think about the old lady in Sakuragaoka in Shenmue I and Fangmei and Aillin sidequests in Shenmue II, it works extremely similarly to a social link, ignore fangmei and she treats you differently, answer her questions incorrectly and she ignores you and becomes agitated, but if you build the friendship you are rewarded with kindness. Now, imagine if by doing the right combination of things to advance your friendship with a character, Ryo actually becomes stronger in a certain style of martial arts, with certain NPCS all having a certain fighting style. Since there will already be a system in place where characters react to player choice and decision in the rapport system, I don't think it's a stretch at all to implement this sort of feature.

yeah, this along with "especially because you bought merchandise" were the main ones that stuck out. part of the problem with different localisation teams working on the game at once. most of the translation is fine though, main story stuff especially.

I thought that sony was publising the game on ps4.

Seems like it might be a joint venture with Ysnet. From the kickstarter page:

I can say that with their assistance on the production and marketing end, and in Sony’s case with some publishing support as well, Ys Net is able to use more of the money we collect through Kickstarter purely for Shenmue 3’s development. It is also important to note that your funds are going strictly to Ys Net for development of Shenmue 3 – Sony and Shibuya Productions are not seeing a cent of your Kickstarter dollars.

Is the PC physical just a glorified Steam key? If so I'll get the PS4 version...maybe the $300 tier, but I know I shouldn't spend that much.

i don't believe so. i'll have to dig up the quote.

The game is being self-published by YsNet, with Sony contributing funds from their Third Party support fund to help them with publishing fees. I guess Sony hasn't yet promised YsNet enough publishing fund support for them to know with certainty they'll be able to afford bankrolling a physical version at retail.

It makes sense that Yu wouldn't want to pull funds from development to ensure a retail release before they know if they can afford it. I feel that Sony needs to get behind this game in more what looks to be basic support, and fund some of the development and all retail publishing fees, if they want to take PR credit for helping to revive Shenmue.

Some of the lines seem incredibly literal. Like, Ryo always replying "I see". Japanese people always say "sou desu" but to force the English version to say that as well just comes off as weird.

Most of time, I don't really give a shit about other people's opinion, ya know. Even those who don't like Shenmue, I can respect that.

Most of the time.

Watching this made my heart shrink a bit. =(

I make a conscious effort to avoid (as best as I can) all these egotistical YouTube "celebrity" wankers who bang on about games like as if they are some sage who came down from a mountain in the Himalayas. So when everyone here mentions Twitch, Let's Play or any other online gaming erm....thingy I have no clue what that is, nor do I want to.

And in the off chance I do come across some Sony or MS execs sitting on a couch with these arseholes as they slug beer I just have to roll my eyes and go "really"?

Just got home from work again and there's been another really good push whilst i was out :)

Been and loaded my bank account up with some dosh today so i can afford to bump my pledge up a bit more tomorrow. Undecided how far

Well, I waited til the end, tossing around the idea of backing or just buying it once it was out, but I decided to go ahead in at the 30 dollar level for the digital copy. I really need to replay the first two though, I have no idea where we are in the story anymore.

Go all the way and post pics with you and Yu in Monaco.

Well hopefully Sega will get off their arse and release Shenmue 1 & 2 HD.

However the very first stretch goal for KS campaign was to include cinematics to get you caught up to speed. So you always have that.

I'll never understand why people wait until the last minute on kickstarter. I mean, I know stuff gets featured in the 'ending soon' section or whatever, but I doubt that brings people to gaming kickstarters

I've just pledged even though I've only " played " the first shenmue and I was like 9 years old at the time. Most of the playing was done by my older cousin while I sat watching him lol

I just hope I can find a way to play the first two games before December 2017.

I wish they had a tier where they gave away a Sega Dreamcast with a copy of Shenmue. I wonder if there would be some legal issues with that if they did so.

That's awesome. Well if the KS campaign is any indication, Sega would be downright silly if they don't release Shenmue 1 & 2 HD.

Unless there's some protracted legal issues, I expect to see this announced before release of Shenmue 3.

Never played Shenmue 1 or 2, but due the possibility that the PS4 Physical release might be limited to this Kickstarted I had to back this.
