Plus what not_so_special posted, if you're inclined to judge against the animation.

Still not seeing it, Egon was a stuck up nerd, nothing from the images (as few as they are) show McKinnon as stuck up nerd.

Like the hair might be at most an easter egg homage and an odd once since you know movie Egon wasn't blonde and the cartoon ain't canon.

But her posing in the cast photo that was released hardly screamed Egon like at all.

How is Leslie Jones a female Winston? Don't tell me you think they're the same character because of the color of their skin.

I didn't say they were the same character because of the same skin color. I said it is clear they went out of their way to cast characters based on the original four. Big difference. And that is what is going to end up hurting this movie. They basically just cast four people who looked very similar to, or who would fill similar roles to, the original cast instead of trying to cast four original characters and building new chemistry apart from existing nostalgia.

Seriously? If you compare the two film stars, their hair colour doesn't match, they don't have even remotely the same kind of spectacles (colour, shape, depth, make, they are all entirely different), they only have a vaguely similar hair style. It almost seems to me like people who complain about others trying to find something hat isn't there are trying to find something that isn't there.

You'd have a good point if you didn't link to images that actually serve as a means by which to point out the blatant differences between the two characters. The attempt to compare the cartoon Egon to McKinnon is simply embarrassing. You may as well say that Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are basically the same because LEGO Star Wars.

EDIT: Btw if we're sharing Earth-shattering image comparison revelations, can I share mine too

Shulk is clearly ripping off Little Mac, Sakurai why

There is absolutely nothing to suggest that. Leslie Jones and Ernie Hudson look nothing alike. The only similarity between Mckinnon and Ramis is that they both wear glasses? Is Melissa McCarthy supposed to be Dan Akroyd? You're not making a very strong case here.

And the Egon thing literally hinges on hair (from the cartoon) and glasses and completely ignores the only solid hint at character we have, the cast photo where McKinnon is posing like a fucking rockstar.

But, a single incarnation of Egon also has blonde hair and a different pair of glasses that are nothing like McKinnon's. Surely that should be enough to prove that Feig was just ripping off the old stuff!

In all seriousness though, people are seeing a character in the new GB who is likely the anti-social type who is focused on work and declaring that Zekemis and Ramus invented that kind of character. What follows is an attempt to prove that she's a collaborative ripoff of many different Egons.

so looking almost like the egon character its Grasping at straws but the pose on a photo its the truth...yeah

i know you are obtuse for the sake of being obtuse(this is internet where everybody is right ),but you cant say with a straight face that the mckinnon character isnt a very clear homage of egon

Get back on topic. If you want to argue about the Ghostbusters movie and its casting, go do it in the Ghostbusters thread.

What about McCarthy and Wiig's characters makes people assume they are Ray and Venkman, besides just people defaulting to them after assigning Mckinnon to Egon and Jones to Winston? Like hardly anything is known about their characters.

I mean, we have McKinnon in non-jumpsuit photos wearing grease stained overalls which evokes Ray a lot more to me given he was the hands on engineer type more than the other characters.

Yes body language means more than a passing similarity to a cartoon version of hair (which can easily be seen as a cute easter egg because you know it's the cartoon version and not the movie) and glasses when trying to decide characters from a few pictures.

Edit:

Posted this before I saw the mod warning. I respect that request and will say no more on this topic here.

If this happened to me, I would wonder who these people in the those strange suits are...

Maybe this would make sense, if the movie was already released and had some success.

Kristen Wiig is hot though, so maybe I'd be happy anyway she'd be sitting at my bed...

Sure you can do something nice, but let's be real. This isn't exempt from a PR move. And PR and a good movie is the only think that'll help the cast. I think pretty much any celebrity advertising they're doing it is PR.

Even if this is true that they wouldn't be impressed at all (I don't like to generalize, especially when it comes to sick kids, but I doubt they're the type of kids to be like "pfft, never heard of 'em. Get 'em out of here!", wouldn't you agree that this would also be true if the original Ghostbusters cast showed up? And can't we both agree that people would be so much more willing to be like "that's the COOLEST thing ever"? People wouldn't point out the kids' ignorance of Ghostbusters or joke about their smiling faces being contrasted with a sick kid's face, or to say "oh, it's just PR".

For younger audiences it wouldn't matter who showed up in a Ghostbusters uniform. Ghostbusters is not something that is recognizable with younger audiences in general. For older audiences, hospital personnel and parents, I'm sure there would be more excitement all three of the original Ghostbusters appeared in costume. Not so much if it was just Aykroyd and Hudson.

I'm sure some kids may be appreciative of this, but I doubt that it really is that big of a deal for most who don't know who these people are.

Man it would have been dope as fuck to get the original crew to visit me back in the day. I remember asking my mom if party visits were a real thing. :(

I'd love to have any version of the Ghostbusters visit me in my sickbed.

I was hospitalized once and all I got was a goddamn bunch of creepy-ass clowns from the Big Apple Circus and a preacher who wanted me to take my hat off so he could lay his hand on my (unwashed) head and bless me like his laying hands were some type of magic cure.

(The clowns were considerably worse.)

this is the cheapest shittiest PR stunt i have ever seen :-(

If this were a PR stunt, it would be incredibly stupid. It's way to far from release, is not nearly well publicized enough, they clearly didn't have a professional photographer, ...

So, we could assume they're terrible at PR. Out we could make the more reasonable assumption that while filming in Boston they thought about a way to make some sick kids happy and went and did it. Do the kids necessarily know about Ghostbusters? Maybe not, but I bet most of them know Melissa McCarthy or Kristen Wiig.

Even if they don't, though, I suspect people showing up in costume and everyone around them acting excited still probably made quite a few kids happy and took their minds of what they're going for. People really need to stop searching for nefarious motives here.

Thats why he said its both cheap and shit in the first place. All they have to do is to show up in their costumes and props, and the hospital facebook team and gossip tabloid sites will do the job. There's nothing unreasonable to deduce this as the other reason too.

No if they went to a funeral, "turned on" their proton packs and "busted" the ghost of the deceased and then posed with funeral attendees for pictures, that would be the cheapest, shittiest PR stunt you've ever seen.

This just made some sick people happy.

This is my favorite thread ever..lol. I just don't understand why ANYONE is mad about ANYTHING in the OP, and beyond. Male/female, same/different, PR/nice gesture..

I have a feeling most kids went "who are these people?" I mean, there isn't even a trailer out yet. This would probably make more sense after the movie was in theaters

Unfortunately, this sort of thing is just going to get worse and worse the closer we get to the movies's release. I was half-joking in some other thread when I compared the level of animosity to Lucas-Hate, but I'm starting to think it's going to easily match that, at least for a little while.

Prepare to be annoyed.

It's a nice gesture, but do kids even know who the Ghostbusters are? Especially this updated version, as the movie isn't even out yet. Seems odd, I guess.

To these kids they will be. Deal with it ;)

Also, that's your reaction to people visiting child cancer patients and making them happy? Come on.

I was joking. Looks like they had fun.

Maybe not, but they have been filming here for a while now. Some people will know just because of that alone.

Regardless it's a very nice gesture and they are obviously just doing a nice thing. I guess my question would be, does it even mean anything to the kids ? Sure I guess a lot of the adults would recognise them, want pictures etc but I can't think of any kid friendly films that they have been in/would be recognised from for a younger audience ?

The funny thing is my little nephew loves the original Ghostbusters so if that cast appeared he'd be ecstatic and if the new cast appeared (before the films out) he'd be like 'who are you ?'

Oh, no no no..I find it amusing. I'll be honest. As an ever aging kid of the 80s, I wasn't thrilled when I heard about the changes and that the fellas would be completely out of the Busting business. Harold Ramis being gone obviously makes this even sadder..but yeah, I'm still gonna watch it.

All female? Well..that's a huge change. Still watching. I'm a fan of half of Wiig and McCarthy movies I've seen, and I'm hoping this is one of the better ones..more so since it's a franchise my children and I are fond of.

I just find the idea that any question whatsoever asked about the movie is some misogynistic blah blah, and doubly that folks can't deal with the fact that this is, ultimately, a totally different movie (or reboot) with women. Plenty of us don't care one way or the other, yet we're lumped because reasons.

Somehow, one side is incapable of ignoring the other side..which has me laughing.

Sadly I agree. A bunch of comedians visit a childrens hospital, i'm sure there were laughs all around. Cool photos, nice memories. And maybe they don't even know who the Ghostbusters are, but you know some distractions are nice when you're in hospital and all. But we're arguing about is PR stunts, Sony's apparent desperation, the womanisation of the original cast.

Do you think those kids knew who they were? If it were a bunch of Minions or Frozen characters, r any character these kids actually cared about, Id give it two thumbs up. Sending rebooted characters from a 20 year old franchise thats not even out yet at worst comes off as self serving and at best half baked. I think they could have done better if their aim was to excite a bunch of children.

It's much more likely for kids in Boston. Remember, this has been filming in town for weeks and it's been big news. I actually know multiple people who have taken their kids downtown to see the filming. Sure, that doesn't mean all these kids know them, but it's much more likely that they would have at least heard of them compared to kids the same age who don't live here.

Also, is this (not this specific post, just the general tenor if conversation) the response every time someone goes and visits kids in the hospital? Chris Pratt does it a lot, do people think that's all PR too? Out is there some special reason why this one offends people?

I guess thats possible. Im not saying I have any issues with them showing up. I know they would do anything to help kids deal with all the pain in their life. I think anyone would. It just seems really weird for these particular characters to show up anywhere yet.
