Ray Gigant |OT| - Slash Beat Mania

Been progressing more, thanks to maxing out Ichiya's weapons am just roflstomping enemies left and right. But that was intended to help with faster game progression.

This title as mentioned does have weak / strong types with weapons / monsters. But as long as your weapon for example does not have a [X] rating against said type you still can put damage through their resistance just by brute force with high damage weapons. Which is basically what Im doing with Ichiya.

Though judging from the skills in the game, later on most def things should pick up a bit with the difficulty. Esp when they start introducing enemies that do stats effect attacks and such.

One thing that I rarely mention, but this time felt that I should is the game has some framerate slowdown. This is in sections in the Ichiya story where inside of dungeons have a lot of holes in the walls so you can see to other sections of the dungeon. My guess is memory issues cause it due to the long distance you are able to see + the rendering of the surrounding graphics and such. So this is just to head things off before folks get the chance to find out for themselves and freak out. Esp with how it seems to be the "in" thing to go and whine about FPS in a lot of other existing threads lol.

Back to over-upgrading my skills on purpose.

Will try to record the next large gigant type fight, since the last recording got fucked up thanks to how temperamental HDMI cables are with my current setup.

Beat the first dungeon and the gigant after that. Fun stuff!

As far as leveling the item tree, I'm assuming it's stats on top of what's equipped! That's the part of the skill tree I don't fully understand.

Glad to hear you seem to be enjoying the title!

Yeah thats what it seems like. The Yellow section = the actual level raised for your characters when resources is spent in there. And then the equipped items (red) along with any passives from the right (blue) side.

The weapon strength also seems to make a difference in the SBM mode. As had killed a floor boss with a single full SBM lol. Got around to uploading the footage of that just for the hell of it

Oh I'm an idiot! Totally didn't realize I used Breed to create items from the red skill tree. Durrr.

No wonder I was doing so little damage lol

haha, yeah those breed gems are for creating items. So its good to save them up for when you raise a level then keep using them till you cant any more for that skill level, then raise it again & repeat :)

I'm liking how all your item and equipment stuff is rolled into the skill tree. That's pretty smart. I still need some force to give Ichiyo some new skills. I've been spending them on Kazu for healing spells and such.

I'm a little worried about Kazu's item tree being so short. I wonder why that is.

I think the explanation storywise would be
due to Kazu and Mana they both have the replica weapons made from a yorigami while ichiya has an original version. My only other thought would be story wise later on they get upgrades to their equipment which adds more slots to their item tree? Thats if it happens

Yeah outside of map pickups force is pretty rare, so you really have a hard choice of trying to decide who to spend it on. Right now I have my Ichiya set up as a tank with taunt and high def with mana and kazu having skills to support that with the 分身 and バリア. Also due to using the higher def items that eats into my accuracy I maxed out Mana's passive for the evade + accuracy up. Also Kazu's special attack / negative status defense passives.

Heres what my skill trees look like currently. Did an update to the old pics.

This system kinda makes it easy to break the game early on if you put in a little time to collecting resources, but am pretty sure it was done on purpose, since they wanted folks to be able to enjoy the story more. But really am hoping for some good end game contents with harder dungeons / fights. Now if one does not go the insane route like I did, the game should provide enough enjoyment by playing through normally and not grinding out resources. I just do these sort of things on purpose to look at the game design / balance.

I gave Ichiya 15 levels of strength and the best sword and he kills everything by himself. The other two characters just defend/restore ap. Grinded a little, by my other item levels are not as high as Parakeetman's.
You don't really need all the fancy abilities, since they cost too much AP to sustain and a simple attack is most cost effective. That said I found enough force in chests to take all the team passives and most of the actives on Ichiya tree. Bosses die from beatmania mode. I tried to kill them without beatmania, but characters go into overdrive after several turns and eat there own hp and beatmania is the only thing that can cancel overdrive (that I know of).

So far the game is very easy.

Basically this is not a title for those who are looking for some sort of overly challenging experience and more for players who want slightly different gameplay from the usual DRPG formula and a strong focus on the narrative side. Though the unfortunate thing with that is Bandai Namco obviously did not shell out enough with the budget, as think it would have helped the story a lot more if they had put more $$$ into getting more lines voiced, since would have gotten people a lot more involved with the characters, which is the main reason for doing semi to full voice in narrative heavy games. Its kinda weird too the sections they choose to / not to have VO lines for also.

So far the writing is not that amazing either, so I am not sure more voices would help much. I mean Riona is cute and everything, but... but.

I like a lot of the fancy abilities, like Mana's healing shot. Some cool ways to tailor your team.

Just beat the dragon Gigant (destroyed the shit out of it) and I'm in the next dungeon. I'm really liking the game a lot. I can see this sucking in people that otherwise wouldn't be into DRPGs.

haha very cool. it is a nice break from the usual stuff and agree with your last statement as it most def seems to be what they were aiming for.

It's interesting but really unbalanced, to the point where you can take one character put all the points into him and just spam main attack/food items to win all fights. Which kind of defeats the point of having a novel system.

I am in the middle of the second scenario. The new main character has elemental weapons (weapons, not skill, so you can make his default attack lightning attribute), meaning he even more broken then the first one. I am not even using SBM on bosses anymore.
Nothing is transferred from the first scenario btw. So use all your resources while you can.

Slash Beat Mode looks weird, how do I tell when something is a quarter note vs. an eighth note etc? Looks like it'd depend more on memorization and reflexes than on rhythm tbh.

Its nothing serious in terms of being a rhythm game and its not that difficult, the only irritating things in it are the doubled up notes as the text that appears on the screen semi blocks the note for the 2nd one on its approach.

Yeah, but you only need to do SMB near perfect once for the trophy. For killing things a few missed notes will not change the power of the attack much.

Yeah, you don't need to be perfect. I got the gold trophy and after that I was like "yeah okay, I'm cool."

I think on the list that was the only "irritating" looking trophy.

Also for the OST DL for the first print bonus the file size is about 151 MB. Can be obtained by inputting the product code found within the case on the OHP link below
http://raygigant.bngames.net/special/soundtrack/

Left button = Package version

Right button = DL version

Also you are only able to us the DL link 5 times with the product code. So make backups once downloaded.

I didn't think I'd care about the soundtrack, but I've got it stuck in my head now, and I like a lot of it.

Surprising that they're doing a package version as well.

ah sorry i should have clarified that. package version as in physical copy of the game :)

What is triggering Drive, btw?

I thought at first it was running out of AP, but you seem to build Drive no matter what the longer a fight goes. Is it basically just based on turns?

Drive has been really interesting, actually. I thought I'd hate it, but it's sometimes surprisingly freeing if I'm willing to get a little close to low HP to do some extra damage.

Looks very fun and innovating but after Oreshika and Tokyo Ghost Hunter, I kinda fear to buy these again, I barely played the two first because the systems were just awful despites the amazing presentation

You get 10% drive every turn. If your food items are good drive is basically infinite AP. 3 attacks + 2 foods every turn by every by every character = a lot of damage and full hp every turn. It's more annoying than useful, since 5 attacks by one character is plenty of damage anyway and you can theoretically die if are very unlucky/forget to switch commands.

What nonsense is this, Oreshika was pretty awesome :P
This one is not really all that good.

Yeah it seems to be based on turns and taking damage I think. Although the tutorial text just says progressing in turns.

When it activates outside of using SBM you can also spend 30 SBM meter points I think it was to deactivate it and drop it back to zero while in battle by pressing the L1 button.

Tokyo Ghost Hunter was known to be a bad game in general. From reports by JP gamers who picked it up.

Oreshika, was a stats raising game above all else so its real hit or miss with folks in general.

This one is not really all that good.

I think the game is a bit on the easy side so far, but it's a perfectly well designed game. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Would say I finally got my copy but it didn't really take that long, just feels like it haha. Can't play for a little while yet but that gives me time to charge the Vita.

nice. mine will probably arrive tomorrow. can't wait to hear the soundtrack.

Don't forget to grab the Vita theme! The music and art are both great.

Played up to the first dungeon. The animation in battles looks a lot better in person than it did in the videos they put out, much smoother. Definitely much heavier on story and dialogue than their previous games, the intro and opening story bit took a good while to get through. Since it does have a bigger emphasis on story it's a bummer they didn't record all the lines. Haven't done many actual battles yet but the AP system is already a nice change.

Already kind of knew the music was really good from that stream the day before release and from the samples on the site, but hearing it in headphones during the dungeon and battles is something else. Other Experience games have a lot of really good tracks, but this seems like they really went to the next level. Not sure if it's because of funding from Bandai Namco or just the composer trying new things, but it's awesome.

Forgot to add this yesterday, had recorded it over the weekend.

First large gigant fight in the Kyle scenario. Went and edited out all of the story bits before the fight.

https://youtu.be/GetWcJK2rkI

For the Kyle / Nil scenarios most def am not going to bother maxing out for the most part like I did with Ichiya. That and the stupid breed gems dont drop enough as is lol.

Got to Kyle's scenario last night. An epic ending to the first part!

Looking forward to drilling into more of the game now. I kinda hate Kyle's design, but it's not a fault of the designer. I just hate bishounen designs in general. He seems like a cool character, otherwise.

the artist もげ seems to do artwork more geared towards the female audience in general so characters like Kyle is closer to his comfort zone if his other artwork is any measure of that haha.

though the artist does have some pretty creative designs with their other artwork. Id like to pull up some of his other drawings but cant get the images to load correctly. D:

Fairly low numbers for Ray Gigant considering it did seem to sell out on a few online retailers. Which must mean that it was just low stock overall. Am curious on how the digital sales did.

Are my eyes going bad or did it say "Slahs bonus"?

I think the game is a bit on the easy side so far, but it's a perfectly well designed game. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
Saying this is a bit in the easy side is like saying Bill Gates is a bit rich. I am close to the end of the game now, and I have not died a single time. If you have fun, more power to you, but perfectly well designed? No. Just no.

Finished up Ichiya's story part, was pretty easy as others have said but it was still enjoyable. Didn't quite reach the cap of 15, ended with everyone at level 13. I also didn't do too much grinding for resources but maybe I should have just to be sure I have enough for some of the trophies later on. Maxed out Ichiya's skills and a shield to finish up later, and tried to spread resources evenly between the accessory and food nodes for everyone.

So far Kyle's section is maybe a little bit more challenging, but it could just seem that way since the levels start over again. If nothing else, it's interesting to have the main character not in the very front.

Yeah Kyles section should be interesting due to
them adding new stuff with the dungeons such as teleport / hidden / one way type of gimmicks to the dungeon. Though for most of us its standard stuff and kinda weird that its being introduced in the middle of the game lol.

If you are thinking about trophies/min-maxing, putting most of your resources into yorigami (ichiya/kyle/the pink) is a really good strategy. The others mostly need food and some defense to not die outright.
Also maybe not spending all your resources in the initial chapter, since turns out,
once individual character chapters are over, left over resources from all of them will get pooled.

For me Kyle was easier, since I knew the game system much better by that point. With maxed weapon/power his normal attack ends mot encounters in one turn.

"perfectly" not as in "without flaw" but as in "this is perfectly fine". I probably should have said "but it's perfectly fine in its design."

I haven't played in a few days. Work has been crazy busy, and I'm looking to get back into Splatoon with the new patch.

Hopefully I can get some time in this weekend! I wanna put a nice dent in the Kyle campaign.

The dungeons are a bit different than the Ichiya ones so am sure you will be amused by it haha.
